CARMI, Ill. (AP) — Cinder blocks have been reinforced with concrete and metal bars after three men broke out of a southern Illinois jail, the White County sheriff said.
A public meeting was packed Tuesday night as Sheriff Doug Maier explained his department's response to the June 16 escape. Two men, including an inmate charged with murder, were on the lam for three weeks before their recent capture. The other man was arrested within a day.
CARMI, Ill. (AP) — Authorities in southeastern Illinois say they've captured the last two of three men who allegedly broke out of a county jail in mid-June.
The Hardin County sheriff's office took 61-year-old Johnny Tipton into custody Saturday night. Tipton was found a day after authorities captured 24-year-old Zachery Shock in Gallatin County. Police say Shock surrendered without resistance and had a loaded gun in his possession.

Jr. Aces to host SIJHSAA Region
Mount Carmel will host a Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association Class L Region. The Region will feature four teams. The two semifinal games will be played on Saturday, Feb. 3. The first game of the day will tip at 9:30 a.m. with the Jr. Aces taking on Carmi. Following that game will be Olney versus Flora at 11 a.m.
CARMI — Mount Carmel head coach Tyler Buss has been waiting for that one game he can point to that is the turning point of the season.
On Friday, the Aces may have given that game to their head coach.
Trailing by as many as six in the fourth quarter, Mount Carmel battled back to defeat Harrisburg, 61-60, in action at the Carmi-White County Invitational Tournament in boys high school basketball action.
CARMI — The way Mount Carmel junior Bret Doan was shooting the 3-ball Saturday morning, the 6-3 guard could have easily outscored the opposing team on his own.
However, after Doan hit his seventh 3 early in the third quarter, Tyler Buss sat him and many of the other starters as the Aces rolled to an easy victory over Mt. Vernon (IN), 69-27, at the Carmi-White County Invitational Tournament.
OLNEY - The Mount Carmel Jr. Lady Aces will attempt to make it three straight trips to the Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association Class L championship tournament when they face Olney tonight at 7 p.m. in girls junior high basketball action.
In the semifinals, Mount Carmel defeated Carmi Saturday afternoon, 34-17. Olney defeated Flora also on Saturday to set up the championship contest.
Aces, Lady Aces to compete in upcoming Mid-Winter Tournaments
MOUNT CARMEL - With two tournaments in the books, Mount Carmel’s boys and girls’ basketball team will each compete in one final regular season tournament later this month.
The boys will compete in the Carmi-White County Invitational Tournament from Jan. 15 through the 20th. The Lady Aces will see action at the Lady Eagle Winter Classic starting Saturday, Jan. 13th and to conclude on Sat. Jan. 20th.

PREP SOFTBALL: Shaffer homers twice to sink Lady Aces in regional tournament
CARMI — Makynna Shaffer was the No. 5 hitter in Carmi-White County's lineup during an IHSA Class 2A Softball Regional Tournament semifinal game against Mount Carmel on Wednesday.
But Shaffer really cleaned up by clubbing a pair of two-run homers as the No. 4-seeded Lady Bulldogs eliminated the No. 5-seeded Lady Aces (14-9) from the postseason with a 6-4 decision at Archie Brown Memorial Field.

PREP BASEBALL/SOFTBALL: IHSA announces regional brackets, schedule
BLOOMINGTON — The Illinois High School Association released earlier this week the brackets and schedule for baseball and softball regional tournaments.
Mount Carmel (4-14) is the No. 10 seed in the Class 2A Fairfield Regional Tournament. The Golden Aces will travel to play in a regional quarterfinal game at Hamilton County at 4:30 p.m. May 15 in McLeansboro.
The Mount Carmel-Hamilton County winner advances to play at No. 2 seed Fairfield in a regional semifinal game at 4:30 p.m. May 17.
OLNEY — The Mount Carmel Middle School Lady Aces won the Junior North Egypt Conference track and field championship, while the Golden Aces placed fifth Tuesday at Richland County High School.
Mount Carmel led the team standings with 152 points, followed by Richland County (102), Fairfield (90), Flora (80) and Carmi-White County (68).
The Lady Aces finished with seven first-place performances.
MOUNT CARMEL — Mount Carmel won more events than Fairfield, but the Mules edged the Golden Aces 53-52 in a boys triangular track and field meet Monday at Riverview Stadium.
Mount Carmel placed first in six races, while Fairfield took four and Carmi-White County ended up with two. But the Mules were able to earn bonus points with seven second-place efforts to hold off a comeback by the Golden Aces, who posted four second-place performances.
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Heavy rains moved across southern Illinois on Sunday prompting the National Weather Service to issue flood warnings for the area.
Cities including Carbondale, Mount Vernon and Carmi were affected.
PREP BASEBALL: Bulldogs rally in rainy fifth to top Golden Aces
MOUNT CARMEL — Carmi-White County scored eight runs in the fifth inning en route to a 15-5 non-conference win over Mount Carmel on Friday at Dee Smith Field.
After the Bulldogs plated four first-inning runs, the Golden Aces took a 5-4 lead with five tallies in the bottom half of the first. Carmi-White County regained a 6-5 advantage with two third-inning runs and scored another run in the fourth.
PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Lady Aces go 1-1 at Harrisburg Round Robin
HARRISBURG — Mount Carmel split a non-conference softball doubleheader Saturday, winning 9-7 against host Harrisburg and losing 12-8 to Carmi-White County.
In Game 1 of the Harrisburg Round Robin, Mount Carmel (7-3) broke a 6-6 tie with two sixth-inning runs and another tally in the seventh to win its seventh game this season. The Lady Aces rallied from a 5-2 deficit after two innings to grab a 6-5 lead in the top of the fourth.
