Clay Helton is on the hot seat at USC and four teams in the Pac-12 South could wind up with identical records at the top of the standings at the end of the season. The conference's southern side enters the final two weeks in a jumble.
Cal’s improved defense looks to end losing streak to USC
LOS ANGELES (AP) — As Southern California piled up one victory after another in a 14-game winning streak against California, defensive supremacy has always been on the side of the Trojans.

Ware runs for 205 yards, 3 TDs as USC beats Oregon St. 38-21
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Southern California coach Clay Helton said his offensive line wanted to control the game. And there's no question they opened up massive holes, for which Helton was thankful in his first time this season handling play calling duties for the Trojans.

USC QB Sears to start in debut vs ASU, replacing Daniels
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Third-string redshirt freshman quarterback Jack Sears will start for Southern California against Arizona State on Saturday.
USC coach Clay Helton announced the decision Friday.
Freshman starter J.T. Daniels spent the week in concussion protocol after getting hurt in the Trojans' loss at Utah. USC also is without sophomore Matt Fink, Daniels' primary backup, after he broke three ribs at Utah.
USC to start new QB against feisty Arizona State
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The recent history between Arizona State and Southern California has been light on competitive games, with only one of the past seven games decided by fewer than 21 points.

USC defense looks to lead given uncertainty at quarterback
LOS ANGELES (AP) — It is still not clear whether freshman JT Daniels or redshirt freshman Jack Sears will start at quarterback for Southern California against Arizona State on Saturday.

USC LB Cam Smith has knee drained, not expected to play
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California senior linebacker Cam Smith is not expected to play against Arizona State on Saturday after having fluid drained from his knee.

Close finishes building intensity in USC-Utah series

"When you look at basically three of the last four games, they've gone down to the last drive," USC coach Clay Helton said. "It's one of those games that you know is going to be a 60-minute game."
The next chance for a nail-biter comes Saturday in Salt Lake City.
USC craving more consistency from erratic offense

USC’s defense dominates in 31-20 win over No. 19 Colorado
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Until Southern California's young offense can put together an entire game with as many brilliant plays as it crammed into the second quarter against Colorado, the Trojans' defense will attempt to carry them toward the Pac-12 title.
The defense came through with an awfully impressive lift Saturday night.
No. 19 Colorado seeks landmark win to end USC’s home streak
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Josh Falo will look across the line of scrimmage at some point Saturday night, and the Southern California tight end will be lined up against his brother, Colorado linebacker Nu'umotu Falo.
Yet this friendly sibling rivalry won't be the most important thing on either brother's mind when the 19th-ranked Buffaloes (5-0, 2-0 Pac-12) go for a historic victory over the defending conference champion Trojans (3-2, 2-1).

USC beats Wash St 39-36 on Daniels’ 3 TDs, Tufele’s block
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California trailed by 13 points in the second half, and the smallish Coliseum crowd grumbled at the prospect of an already shaky season slipping away entirely from this powerhouse program.
Right before the Trojans really got in trouble, they started making big plays. And when Jay Tufele slipped into the perfect spot and got his big arm up to block a field goal, USC's season was back on track.
