Kansas to use gift for chemical engineering research lab
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — The University of Kansas plans to use a $1 million gift to establish a new chemical engineering research laboratory.
Richard and Elizabeth Hoover, of Northport Michigan, both graduated from the university in 1971. They now live in Northport, Michigan.
Richard Hoover said in a news release that he hopes the lab will give students more hands-on research experience so they will be better prepared for the job market.
Man gets life sentence for killing wife with daughter’s help
CORNING, N.Y. (AP) — A 48-year-old New Jersey man will spend the rest of his life in prison without possibility of parole for strangling his ex-wife in upstate New York with the help of his college student daughter.
Lloyd Neurauter, of North Brunswick, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in October for strangling Michele Neurauter of Corning, New York, and staging the scene as suicide. He expressed remorse and said he has "found God" before he was sentenced in Steuben County Court on Tuesday.
Gov. Cuomo touts work to renovate upstate NY airports
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo is touting work to renovate airports in Syracuse, Plattsburgh and the Southern Tier.
The Democrat, who is up for re-election next week, traveled to Syracuse Hancock International Airport on Thursday to announce the completion of that facility's $62 million overhaul.

CORNING, N.Y. (AP) _ Corning Inc. (GLW) on Tuesday reported third-quarter profit of $625 million.
The Corning, New York-based company said it had profit of 67 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains, came to 51 cents per share.
The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 48 cents per share.
Slain trooper to be honored at Alfred before football game
ALFRED, N.Y. (AP) — Alfred University is honoring a slain New York state trooper at its football home opener on Saturday.
Trooper Nicholas Clark was shot and killed last month while responding to a suicidal man barricaded in his home near Corning.
Clark graduated from Alfred in 2011 and was a football standout.

On a per-share basis, the Corning, New York-based company said it had net income of 78 cents. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains, came to 38 cents per share.
The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of six analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 37 cents per share.

WATERFORD, N.Y. (AP) — The GlassBarge is making its way west along the Erie Canal to commemorate the 150th anniversary of glassmaking in upstate New York.
The 80-foot-long barge is outfitted with electric glassblowing equipment. It is offering free demonstrations in more than 30 canal side communities.
The barge will be in Waterford this weekend and Little Falls next weekend. The four-month tour continues to western New York before returning to Seneca Lake for a celebration in Corning on Sept. 22.
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A helicopter will be used to bring roofing materials to the top of Albany's 44-story Corning Tower.
Weather permitting, flights will start Sunday. State officials plan some temporary road closures around the Empire State Plaza to accommodate the flights.
The helicopter lift is the first of three planned for the coming months to transport material that will be used for roofing and to replace the 45-year-old building's original maintenance rigs.
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (AP) — A barge fitted with glassblowing equipment is making a stop in Poughkeepsie.
The 80-foot-long barge operated by the Corning Museum of Glass is docking along the Hudson River at Poughkeepsie Friday through Sunday. The craft is equipped with electric glassblowing equipment and offers free demonstrations to guests who pre-register.

CORNING, N.Y. (AP) — An upstate New York college student charged with helping her father kill her mother has agreed to testify against him as a part of a plea deal.
Karrie Neurauter says she drove her father to her mother's home in Corning last year and distracted a younger sibling while he strangled his ex-wife. She then helped him make the scene look like a suicide and lied to police.
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The city of Albany is getting more than $3 million in state funding to turn a lightly traveled interstate ramp into an elevated park giving pedestrians and bicyclists access to the Hudson River.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Monday that the downtown project will transform the Clinton Avenue ramp off the northbound side of Interstate 787 into the Albany Skyway. The Democrat says the project will offer another safe way to reach the city's Corning Riverfront Park.
Husband charged in wife’s strangling to face charges in NY
CORNING, N.Y. (AP) — A New Jersey man charged with strangling his ex-wife with the help of his college student daughter will face charges in New York after waiving extradition.
Forty-six-year-old Lloyd Neurauter, of North Brunswick, was arrested in Princeton last week. He waived extradition on Wednesday and Corning, New York, police are making arrangements for his return to New York state.

CORNING, N.Y. (AP) — An upstate New York college student has pleaded not guilty in the death of her mother, which prosecutors say was staged to look like a suicide.
Corning police this week charged 20-year-old Karrie Neurauter, of Syracuse, and her father, 45-year-old Lloyd Neurauter, of North Brunswick, New Jersey, with second-degree murder in the August death of 46-year-old Michele Neurauter.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York state is granting $1 million for trails and attractions related to the Erie Canal.
The Corning Museum of Glass will get $148,000 to install a mobile glass-blowing studio on a barge.
In the Buffalo area, Amherst is getting $65,000 for trail improvements and North Tonawanda will get $100,000 to improve Gateway Harbor Park.
New York-based glass producer Corning Inc. says it has no immediate plans for the huge shuttered Hynix computer-chip plant it recently bought in west Eugene.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Corning Inc. has been revealed as the winner bidder in the recent auction of the former Hynix computer chip plant in Eugene.
The Register-Guard reports a deed filed this week in Lane County shows Corning subsidiary Damon Enterprises paid $13.39 million for the shuttered 1.2 million-square-foot plant.
New York-based Corning Inc. is the mystery buyer of the former Hynix computer chip plant in west Eugene, a Corning spokesman said Tuesday.
New 60-unit affordable housing apartment project completed
CORNING, N.Y. (AP) — A city in New York's Southern Tier now has dozens of new, affordable apartments, including nearly two dozen set aside for people recovering from mental illnesses.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Friday that the Lamphear Court Apartments project in Corning in Steuben (stoo-BEHN') County is complete. The $12.4 million project is part of the Democrat's initiative to boost affordable housing availability in the state.

Acclaimed modernist architect Gunnar Birkerts dies at 92
NEEDHAM, Mass. (AP) — Gunnar Birkerts, an internationally acclaimed modernist architect who designed buildings including the Federal Reserve Bank in Minneapolis, the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York, and the University of Michigan Law Library, has died. He was 92.
His son, Sven Birkerts, said his father died Tuesday of congestive heart failure at his home in Needham, Massachusetts.
ROME, N.Y. (AP) — Events celebrating the 200th anniversary of the start of the construction of the Erie Canal are kicking off this weekend.
A seven-day bicentennial event with the Albany Symphony begins Sunday night in the city's waterfront Corning Preserve. Over the next six days there will be "Water Music NY" concert performances along the canal corridor in Schenectady, Amsterdam, Little Falls, Baldwinsville, Brockport and Lockport.

CORNING, N.Y. (AP) — A new exhibit at The Corning Museum of Glass features Louis Tiffany's glass mosaics.
Tiffany is known for his work on leaded glass windows and lamps, but the glass museum is highlighting the pictures and patterns he made by arranging small colored pieces of glass.
The exhibition features almost 50 works dating from the 1890s to the 1920s, from smaller pieces to large mosaic panels.
CORNING, N.Y. (AP) — The Rockwell Museum in Corning is opening a new art exhibit put together with the help of the local community.
The exhibition by artist Marie Watt called Blanket Stories features a sculpture created with blankets, quilts, and afghans contributed in part by residents in the Finger Lakes area.
People were asked to contribute blankets and their stories. Each story is represented by a textile in the sculpture.
Corning Museum president named to US advisory committee
CORNING, N.Y. (AP) — The president of The Corning Museum of Glass has been appointed to a federal advisory committee that helps protect the cultural heritage of foreign countries.
Officials at the museum in New York's Southern Tier say Karol Wight, who also serves as executive director, was appointed to the State Department's Cultural Property Advisory Committee. Former President Barack Obama confirmed her appointment before he left office last month.
Dow Chemical beats Street 4Q forecasts
NEW YORK (AP) — A boost in revenue from consumer markets pushed Dow Chemical's fourth-quarter results beyond Wall Street expectations.
The results were helped by the chemical company's move to take full control of its Dow-Corning venture. It still faces scrutiny over a proposed merger with rival DuPont.
Police: NY man caught stealing store goods dies in crash
CORNING, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a man who died in a crash on an upstate New York highway was fleeing police after getting caught stealing merchandise from a Southern Tier retail store.
The Chemung County Sheriff's Office says 35-year-old Adam VanCise, of Palmyra, was caught leaving the Walmart in the town of Horseheads with a cart full of goods around 8 a.m. Wednesday.
