The Oregonian/OregonLive reports 35-year-old Eric Scully pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday to endangering human life and illegally possessing and manufacturing marijuana.

Sgt. Carrie Carver of the Lane County Sheriff's Office said Thursday that deputies initially couldn't find the suspect on the large parcel of land. They eventually discovered a building where they believed the man was hiding, and used a loud speaker to call inside.
Fire destroys wood mill in Saginaw, Oregon
SAGINAW, Ore. (AP) — A massive fire has destroyed the Whitsell wood products manufacturing plant in the community of Saginaw, north of Cottage Grove.
The Register-Guard reports the fire was reported at around 7:30 p.m. Sunday and engulfed the mill within 30 minutes.

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — The U.S. Marshals Service says a missing sex offender from Vermont has been arrested in Oregon.
The Marshals say 55-year-old James Rivers was arrested May 16 in Cottage Grove, Oregon, by deputy marshals and local police. It's unclear if he has an attorney.

Thieves uprooting Oregon’s state flower
DORENA, Ore. (AP) — Shovels in hand, a group of 15 middle school-aged kids from Dorena School took time out of their morning recently to plant Oregon grape at a nearby park.
The kids dug deep enough to give the plants' roots a firm footing and pulled up rocks to loosen the soil. Accustomed to such restoration work, the group had 40 plants in the ground in less than an hour. The Dorena School kids had a specific mission last Thursday: replace the Oregon grape plants stolen by thieves in the park.

Myrtle Creek man taken to hospital after multi-vehicle crash near Cottage Grove
COTTAGE GROVE — A Myrtle Creek man was seriously injured Wednesday night when he was struck by a pickup truck on Interstate 5 while warning traffic of a crash that involved a semitrailer.
The pileup began at approximately 7:46 p.m., when the driver of a southbound semitrailer, Amarveer Dahliwal, 45, of Everett, Wash., lost control of the vehicle and crashed into an outside guardrail 6 miles south of Cottage Grove, said Lt. Cari Boyd of the Oregon State Police.
COTTAGE GROVE — A Myrtle Creek man was seriously injured Wednesday night when he was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 5, having stopped to help warn other drivers after a crash involving a tractor-trailer rig rapidly grew to include a total of six vehicles.

COTTAGE GROVE — For the second consecutive year, state environmental regulators have fined Cottage Grove for irrigating the city-owned Middlefield Golf Course with excessively contaminated sewage wastewater.
The state Department of Environmental Quality fined the city $1,575, the agency announced Friday. The department said a sample collected from the golf course last May contained bacteria from human waste slightly above the levels the city is allowed to discharge under its state permit.

BEND, Ore. (AP) — A Cottage Grove man responsible for killing two trumpeter swans while hunting in central Oregon must pay $4,750 in restitution.
The Bulletin reports in a story on Friday that 35-year-old Michael J. Abbott received the sentence in Lake County Circuit Court. Abbott must also serve one year of probation and has lost his hunting privileges for three years.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) — A high-tech heart valve replacement surgery that requires less anesthetic, a smaller incision and faster operation and recovery time has been performed on more than 425 heart patients at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in the past five years.
Now, this transcatheter aortic valve replacement procedure — TAVR for short — is available to an expanded group of heart patients: the younger, stronger ones.

In her Facebook post, Virginia Sexton said her son was “very loved by everyone that he met” and that he “lived life to the fullest and he loved life so much.”
COTTAGE GROVE — A 13-year-old boy was killed Wednesday evening while riding his bicycle on Highway 99 north of Cottage Grove, Oregon State Police said Thursday.
State police Sgt. Kyle Hove said in a press release that the boy was bicycling south on Highway 99 when he was struck by a 2002 GMC pickup truck driven by Richard Perini, an 85-year-old Creswell resident.
The collision occurred about 6 p.m. about three miles north of Cottage Grove, Hove said.
Boy, 13, dies when pick-up strikes his bike
COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (AP) — A 13-year-old boy was killed when a pick-up truck driven by an 85-year-old man struck him as he rode his bicycle on Highway 99S near Cottage Grove.
The teen killed Wednesday has not been publicly identified. The driver of the truck is cooperating with police and has not been charged in the crash.
Highway 99S was closed for three hours while the Oregon State Police investigated.
COTTAGE GROVE — A city police captain aimed his handgun at an armed man in the middle of Interstate 5 last month and pulled the trigger, but the gun didn’t fire, according to a search warrant affidavit filed last week in Lane County Circuit Court.
Cottage Grove police Capt. Doug Skaggs tried to load another round, but moments later the gunman’s demeanor changed, and Skaggs subdued him with a Taser, according to the affidavit filed by Oregon State Police Detective Cale Day.

North Douglas County Mental Health provider gets new director
COTTAGE GROVE — South Lane Mental Health, the organization that provides mental health services to northern Douglas County, has hired Damien Sands to become its new executive director, starting Jan. 2.
Sands was a program officer for Oregon Community Foundation, and will succeed Tom Wheeler, who has been the director of the agency for the last 25 years.
COTTAGE GROVE — A man was arrested on Interstate 5 Friday morning after he allegedly pulled out a gun following a traffic crash near Cottage Grove, according to Oregon State Police.
Steven Lind Smith, 66, of Cottage Grove was booked into the Lane County Jail. He faces charges of menacing, unlawful use of a weapon, pointing a firearm at another and second-degree disorderly conduct.
Warehouse fire sends smell of pot wafting through town
COTTAGE GROVE — An overheated piece of machinery at a cannabis oil extraction facility is suspected of sparking a fire after an employee left it on while seeking medical treatment.
The employee went to the hospital for treatment of burns caused by the machinery, according to Cottage Grove police officer Thomas Roberts, and inadvertently left the machine on.
