Minshew passed for 299 yards to help Washington State (11-2) set a school record for wins in a season.
Minshew's biggest play came out of desperation and it set up the winning score.
Iowa State loads up on RBs in case Montgomery jumps to NFL
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State junior running back David Montgomery has a big decision to make after the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 28
If Montgomery decides to jump to the NFL — and few in Ames would blame him for doing so — the Cyclones just signed two backs who could serve as his replacements as early as next season.

No. 24 Iowa State barely survives, beats FCS Drake 27-24
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State insisted on playing 12 games, cycling through a pair of FCS opponents before settling on tiny Drake.
That decision nearly resulted in the most embarrassing loss in school history.
David Montgomery ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns and No. 24 Iowa State survived a near-upset by the non-scholarship Bulldogs on Saturday, winning 27-24.
No. 25 Iowa State rallies to stun K-State 42-38

Line: Texas by 3.
Series record: Texas leads 13-2
WHAT'S AT STAKE?
Both teams are fighting for second-place in the Big 12 and a chance to slip into the conference championship game. Both need help to get there and neither can realistically afford to lose. Texas is seeking its eighth win, a mark it hasn't reached since 2013.
No. 18 Iowa State to miss Montgomery for a half vs. Texas
AMES, Iowa (AP) — No. 18 Iowa State will be without junior David Montgomery, one of its best players, for the first half of one of the bigger games in school history.
How the Cyclones (6-3, 5-2 Big 12) fare for 30 minutes without their star running back could decide whether they stay alive in the Big 12 title game chase.
Scuffling Baylor-Iowa St players to miss 1st half this week
Iowa State running back David Montgomery and Baylor defensive end Greg Roberts will miss the first half of their teams' games this week after the scuffle that led to their ejections in the second half of a testy game between the Cyclones and Bears.
No. 23 Iowa State beats Baylor 28-14 for 5th straight win
AMES, Iowa (AP) — A weird game ended with another wonderful result for Iowa State.
Now the Cyclones have to wait and see on the status of star running back David Montgomery.
Brock Purdy threw for a touchdown and ran for another score, and No. 23 Iowa State topped Baylor 28-14 on Saturday after a skirmish in the third quarter resulted in unsportsmanlike conduct penalties for each player on both teams.

ISU’s Montgomery, Baylor’s Roberts ejected for fighting
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State star David Montgomery and Baylor linebacker Greg Roberts were ejected after throwing punches at each other in the third quarter Saturday.
The Cyclones and Bears nearly came to blows when a previous play ended up spilling over onto Iowa State's bench. The bad blood hung around, and the teams nearly staged a full-on brawl during a wild incident that saw Roberts slap Montgomery on the helmet, prompting Montgomery to swing back.
Running backs earn higher profile in Big 12 this season
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Last season, quarterbacks and receivers dominated the headlines in the Big 12.
Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield won the Heisman Trophy, Oklahoma State's James Washington won the Biletnikoff Award for the nation's top receiver and Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph won the Unitas Golden Arm Award for the nation's top senior or fourth-year quarterback.
Iowa State throttles No. 6 West Virginia 30-14
AMES, Iowa (AP) — It was arguably West Virginia's biggest test, on the road at night against a plucky Iowa State team with a stifling defense and a dangerous young quarterback.
The sixth-ranked Mountaineers failed miserably.
Freshman Brock Purdy threw for 254 yards and three TDs and Iowa State throttled West Virginia 30-14 on Saturday, handing the Mountaineers their first loss in emphatic fashion.
Struggling Cyclones having trouble catching a break in ’18
AMES, Iowa (AP) — After a resurgent year in which Iowa State finally broke out the Big 12 basement, the Cyclones can't seem to catch a break.
Iowa State's canceled opener put it a week behind everyone else on its schedule and it's been a climb ever since. The Cyclones (1-3, 0-2 Big 12) will be without starting quarterback Kyle Kempt (knee injury) for the fourth week in a row when they travel to No. 25 Oklahoma State (4-1, 1-1) on Saturday.
Iowa St RB David Montgomery “day-to-day” with arm injury
Top Iowa State running back David Montgomery is day-to-day after suffering an upper arm injury late in last weekend's loss at TCU.
Coach Matt Campbell said an MRI and x-rays were negative and that Montgomery was working out with the team on Sunday with what he described as a deep bruise. Campbell said Montgomery's status for Saturday's game at Oklahoma State is probable and may depend on how much Montgomery can deal with the pain.
Iowa State holds off Akron 26-13
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State finally broke into the win column in 2018, relying on defense and its kicker to carry an underwhelming and, at times, uninspired offense.
Zeb Noland threw for 233 yards and a touchdown, David Montgomery had 107 yards rushing and a score and Iowa State held off Akron 26-13 on Saturday for its first win of the season.
Iowa State eager to build on best season since 2000
AMES, Iowa (AP) — For decades, Iowa State's slogan could have easily been "first in tailgating, last in the Big 12."
The Cyclones appear to be on the verge, finally, of being known more for their play than the pre-game scene in Ames.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Big 12 coaches and football junkies know all about Iowa State junior running back David Montgomery.
Montgomery is poised to make his presence felt throughout the rest of the country this fall.
Montgomery racked up 1,146 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns in 2017. But those numbers fail to fully show how impressive he was in just his second season at the position.
No. 19 Memphis, Iowa State preparing for chilly Liberty Bowl
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Memphis will be playing the Liberty Bowl in familiar territory, but the chilly weather could have Iowa State feeling right at home.
Iowa St RB David Montgomery OK for Kansas State game
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Matt Campbell walked briskly into his weekly news conference and quickly squelched any uncertainty over running back David Montgomery's health.
"He'll be ready to roll," the Iowa State coach said Monday.
AMES -- Next man up is a cliché in football. It’s a phrase coaches use to try and instill belief in their fans and players.
Iowa State's football team actually buys into that, and another example came in its 23-13 win against Baylor on Saturday.
The Cyclones are on their fourth quarterback of the season and there has been little to no dropoff among the four.
AMES -- The first thing people notice when they see Iowa State fullback Sam Seonbuchner is his blond, shoulder-length hair.
“Well, he’s got the best hair of anyone, so I think that part’s really positive,” coach Matt Campbell joked.
Then Seonbuchner hits an opposing player and people forget all about his hair. The 6-foot-3, 232-pound converted linebacker is tough. He’s a throwback football player who brings a defensive mindset to the offensive side of the ball.
AMES, Iowa | The first thing people notice when they see Iowa State full back Sam Seonbuchner is his hair.
He uses Pantene shampoo and conditioner to keep his blond, shoulder-length hair in pristine condition.
“Well he’s got the best hair of anyone one, so I think that part’s really positive,” coach Matt Campbell joked.
Underclassman running backs fuel Big 12 attacks
The running game has become increasingly important in the Big 12 this season — with a host of talented young backs leading the way.
Seven of the league's top 10 rushers were underclassmen as the league reached the midway point of the season, led by Oklahoma State's Justice Hill, Iowa State's David Montgomery and Oklahoma's talented duo of Trey Sermon and Abdul Adams.
Montgomery, Iowa State throttle Kansas 45-0
AMES, Iowa (AP) — The challenge for Iowa State after stunning Oklahoma on the road was to see if it could handle success.
Kansas made sure the Cyclones didn't have to face much adversity on a soaking wet Saturday in Ames.
David Montgomery ran for a career-high three touchdowns and Iowa State throttled Kansas 45-0 for its second straight win.

Iowa State looks to bounce back after tough Texas loss
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Even though Matt Campbell won just five of his first 15 games at Iowa State, fans largely cut him some slack.
It was evident that the Cyclones were making progress across the board, leading some optimistic supporters to wonder whether the team could snap a five-year bowl drought this fall.
The end of Campbell's honeymoon in Ames could be coming soon.
ISU football preview: Montgomery, Cyclones welcome test from Texas
AMES — It’s hard to bring Iowa State running back David Montgomery down on the field, that much has been established.
After the Cyclones’ last game against Akron, Montgomery led the nation in broken tackles with 36, nine more than the next-closest player, according to Pro Football Focus.
But as hard as it’s going to be for Texas’ players to tackle Montgomery tonight in Jack Trice Stadium, Montgomery might be even harder to take down off the field.
AKRON, Ohio — The culture change Iowa State football coach Matt Campbell is trying to enact can be described, in its simplest form, as a two-part plan.
Wins, of course, are how teams are measured from an outside perspective. Iowa State got its second Saturday in a 41-14 blowout at Akron. Securing victories are only the second part of the plan, though.
ISU Football: Cyclones won’t overlook MAC foe Akron
AMES — Matt Campbell knows both sides.
The second-year Iowa State coach has led mid-level football programs to wins against Power Five programs and has lost to an FCS school in a span of two years.
When Iowa State plays at Akron on Saturday, he’ll be taking on a familiar program in his home state. The key is for his Cyclones (1-1), though, is to approach the matchup against the MAC-based Zips (1-1) similarly to how his Toledo teams used to view Power Five opponents.
Iowa State RB David Montgomery off to big start
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State appears to finally have the kind of potent offense it will need to compete in Big 12 play.
Sophomore running back David Montgomery is a big reason why.
Four things the football teams from Iowa State and Iowa can do to put themselves in position for a victory in Saturday's 11 a.m. game at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames:
Playmakers emerge for Cyclones in opener
AMES, Iowa (AP) — One of Iowa State's biggest questions heading into 2017 was whether it could overcome its deficiencies by leaning heavily on its playmakers.
The Cyclones got the answers they were looking for in their opener.
Iowa State turned two interceptions into touchdowns and got two more TDs from running back David Montgomery in last weekend's 42-24 win over Northern Iowa of the FCS.
AMES -- When it was good for Northern Iowa, it was real good.
Unfortunately, the bad out-weighed the good as the Panthers dropped a 42-24 decision to Iowa State Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium to open the 2017 season.
UNI scored on its first possession and led early, but two interceptions returned for touchdowns turned the tide and eventually the Cyclones offense got going and it was too much for the Panthers.
Iowa State holds off Northern Iowa 42-24
AMES, Iowa (AP) — It wasn't the smoothest of openers for Iowa State.
But it went down as a relatively comfortable win for the Cyclones — one they won't look down on after last year's opening debacle against Northern Iowa.
Jacob Park threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns and Iowa State, aided by a pair of interception returns for TDs, beat the FCS Panthers 42-24 in the season opener for both teams Saturday.
Cyclones hope to counter shaky defense with explosive attack
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State's restructured defense will be considered a liability until it can prove otherwise.
The Cyclones will look to counter a defense in flux with what could be one of the best offenses in school history.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Two years ago, Iowa State's Mike Warren established himself as one of the nation's most promising young running backs.
Late last season, David Montgomery did the same thing.
The Cyclones are hoping the pair will give them a successful running game after a 3-9 record last season.
A look at football players in the Big 12 Conference this spring who are poised to have standout seasons beginning this fall:
No. 19 West Virginia looks to bounce back at Iowa State
No. 19 West Virginia (8-2, 5-2 Big 12, No. 18 CFP) at Iowa State (3-8, 2-6 Big 12), 3:30 p.m. (FS1).
Line: West Virginia by 9
Series Record: West Virginia leads 3-1
WHAT'S AT STAKE
West Virginia can still finish third in the Big 12 and play in a high-caliber bowl game. Iowa State isn't going bowling, but three straight wins to close out 2016 would give it plenty of momentum heading into 2017.
AMES, Iowa — It’s easy to look at David Montgomery and try to pigeonhole him as a burly, short-yardage back.
His freshman season at Iowa State has proved he’s so much more.
After sharing an ‘OR’ spot on last week’s depth chart with sophomore Mike Warren and freshman Kene Nwangwu at running back last week, Montgomery was elevated to the clear No. 1 roll in Monday’s notes.
Iowa State finds ground game in win at Kansas
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Establishing the run has been something Iowa State has wanted to accomplish all season.
The Cyclones finally found their ground game in last week's win at Kansas and they're hoping that blueprint can help them finish yet another lost season on a high note.
