Too much brine? Study highlights growing toxic brine problem
BERLIN (AP) — The world's thirst for fresh water is causing a salty problem.
Desalination plants around the world are producing enough brine waste to swamp an area the size of Florida with a foot of salty water every year, according to a U.N.-backed report released Monday.
The study by researchers from Canada, the Netherlands and South Korea warned that much of the brine is being dumped untreated into the sea, and some is laden with toxic chemicals, causing harm to sea life.
KFAR YUVAL, Israel (AP) — For years, public service announcements warned Israelis to save water: Take shorter showers. Plant resilient gardens. Conserve. Then Israel invested heavily in desalination technology and professed to have solved the problem by tapping into the abundant waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The once ubiquitous conservation warnings vanished.
Now, a five-year drought is challenging that strategy, as farmers struggle and the country's most important bodies of water shrink.
In New Mexico, ‘praying for rain’ won’t be enough
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico's supply of groundwater should be reserved for periods of drought, communities should have sharing agreements in place when supplies are short and alternatives such as desalination should be explored regardless of the cost.
The recommendations are part of the state's draft water plan released late Monday by New Mexico's top water managers.
PHOENIX (AP) — Anticipating years of drought, officials built the Yuma Desalting Plant in 1992 to treat agricultural runoff and conserve water in Lake Mead. Over the past 26 years, however, the plant has operated just three times while costing millions of dollars to maintain.
And it may need millions more, even to operate at a small fraction of capacity.
ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Relations between Greece and Turkey are experiencing a "period of instability," the Greek prime minister said Tuesday, stressing that Greece will not negotiate over any part of its territory.
Speaking from the small eastern Aegean island of Kastelorizo, which he visited to inaugurate a desalination plant, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said he had a "message of cooperation" for Greece's eastern neighbor, but also "a message of determination."
Donors raise $560 million for Gaza water treatment plant
BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union says international donors have raised 456 million euros ($560 million) to build a desalination plant in the Gaza Strip to provide around 2 million people with safe drinking water.
At a pledging conference in Brussels on Tuesday, the EU offered more than 77 million euros, which combined with other donations will meet around 80 percent of the plant's costs.
FLORENCE, S.C. — "Desalination" and "groundwater" were the difference between first and second place Saturday in the Florence School District One 12th Annual Spelling Bee for 3rd- and 4th-grade students at Delmae Elementary School.
US officials celebrate desalination plant in New Mexico
ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) — Federal water managers are in New Mexico this week to celebrate the 10th anniversary of a research center dedicated to pursuing technology that can turn brackish groundwater into usable water.
Officials with the Bureau of Reclamation will be in Alamogordo on Tuesday and Wednesday to mark the anniversary of the national desalination research facility. Experts from NASA, the U.S. Agriculture Department and the University of New Mexico also will be on hand.
Dry Jordan launches project to grow crops from seawater
AQABA, Jordan (AP) — Water-poor Jordan has launched a project using seawater to produce crops with clean energy.
Jordan's King Abdullah II and Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, which contributed most of the $3.7 million cost, inaugurated the facility Thursday in the kingdom's Red Sea port city of Aqaba.
Haakon told reporters he was "impressed by the way innovative ideas have been translated into a plant the size of four football fields."
Kuwait contains oil spill off its southern coast
KUWAIT CITY (AP) — Kuwait's state oil company says it has contained an oil spill off the Gulf country's southern coast.
The Kuwait Petroleum Company said in a statement carried by the state news agency on Tuesday evening that cleanup teams took steps to break up the spill near power and desalination plants.
It says large volumes of floating oil have been removed, and that it has contacted oil companies to determine the source of the leak.
Yale scientists developing method to distill sea water
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Removing salt from seawater to create distilled water is not a new phenomenon.
But using solar power to make the incredibly energy-intensive process potentially viable for a household or a small, remote community is new.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) — Santa Barbara has completed a $71 million reactivation of its seawater desalination plant to bolster its water supplies.
The city is in a section of California northwest of Los Angeles that received far less precipitation than parts of the state where an extremely rainy and snowy winter brought relief after years of drought.
Desalination plant brings relief to Gaza
DEIR EL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — International aid workers on Thursday opened a new desalination plant in the Gaza Strip, bringing some relief to a territory where 97 percent of the water is undrinkable.
It is the Hamas-ruled territory's second and largest desalination plant. While it will not solve Gaza's water woes, officials said the project marked an important step.
