Orioles star Machado could move _ new position, or new team
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Baltimore Orioles star Manny Machado could be on the move.
To a new position — or a new team.
Big names emerged in trade talk Tuesday, with Machado, New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey and Detroit pitcher Michael Fulmer heating up the winter meetings.
And no surprise, the busy New York Yankees are looming, looking to boost a ballclub getting more formidable by the day.
For the moment, no deals for that trio of All-Stars.
Romine agrees to $1.05 million deal with Mariners
SEATTLE (AP) — Utilityman Andrew Romine and the Seattle Mariners have agreed to a $1.05 million, one-year contract for the 2018 season, while the club chose not to tender contracts to pitchers Drew Smyly and Shae Simmons.
Seattle made the roster moves Friday while tendering contracts to 27 players on its major league roster. Romine was claimed off waivers by Seattle on Nov. 2. Romine appeared in 124 games last season for the Tigers. Most of his time was spent in the infield.
Sapakoff: Why Dabo is worth two million BBQ meals and almost as much as Drew Smyly
Pity the poor sap that replaces Dabo Swinney, likely to be the hardest person to follow in the history of Palmetto State college athletics. He is the only active major college football coach to win a national championship and take his school’s brand beyond precedent.
Alabama had Bear Bryant, Florida State had Bobby Bowden, Ohio State had Woody Hayes.
Mariners lose lefty Drew Smyly to Tommy John surgery
SEATTLE (AP) — Drew Smyly was the centerpiece to one of Seattle's many offseason moves by general manager Jerry Dipoto. He was a priority acquisition as a proven lefty for the rotation the Mariners believed would thrive pitching at Safeco Field.
Smyly will end his first season in Seattle never having thrown a pitch during the regular season. The Mariners announced Wednesday that Smyly will need Tommy John surgery after being diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament.
SEATTLE (AP) — Ariel Miranda's tough spring training seems like a long time ago right now.
Miranda pitched a four-hitter for his first career complete game, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-1 on Sunday to sweep their weekend series.
Miranda (6-2) struck out a career-high nine and walked one. The Cuban left-hander is 5-0 with a 3.47 ERA over his last eight starts.
Seattle Mariners stalwarts Jean Segura and Nelson Cruz combined for three at-bats before they both had to leave due to injury in Thursday’s 6-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies at Safeco Field.
Segura left in the fourth inning after he injured his left ankle on a hard slide into second base. Cruz had been hit in the left hand the previous inning, stayed in the game, but then did not come out for his plate appearance in the fifth, replaced by Boog Powell.
TORONTO (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays got another home run from Jose Bautista. The Seattle Mariners lost another starting pitcher to an injury.
So it was more of the same for each team.
Bautista hit a three-run shot and Kendrys Morales also went deep, helping Toronto beat Seattle 7-2 on Saturday for its sixth win in seven games.
The Mariners promoted right-hander Ryan Weber from Triple-A Tacoma to start against the Blue Jays, and he left after 3 2/3 innings with a sore shoulder.
TORONTO (AP) — Right-hander Ryan Weber lasted less than four innings in his season debut with Seattle before becoming the latest Mariners' pitcher to sustain an injury.
Selected from Triple-A Tacoma to start against the Blue Jays on Saturday, Weber left because of tightness in his shoulder after 3 2/3 innings.
SEATTLE (AP) — Mariners left-hander James Paxton was placed on the 10-day disabled list Friday with a left forearm strain, another blow for Seattle's already short-handed starting rotation.
The Mariners believe the injury is minor and Paxton will only miss two or three starts. But Paxton is the third pitcher from the projected starting rotation at the beginning of spring training to find himself on the disabled list, joining Drew Smyly (60-day DL) and Felix Hernandez (10-day DL).
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Seattle Mariners starter Drew Smyly will begin the season on the disabled list and could be out for up to two months because of a strained elbow.
Smyly likely will miss six to eight weeks with a flex strain in his left elbow, a big blow after the Mariners' roster seemed set for the start of the regular season. Smyly will rehab the injury and surgery is not expected, but he and the club are seeking additional information about how to handle the recovery.
Felix Hernandez is a Cy Young Award winner who might be the best American League pitcher of his generation.
Robinson Cano is a seven-time All-Star who’s on the fast track to Cooperstown.
Nelson Cruz has hit 40 home runs in each of his past three seasons and might be the best DH in the game.
Drew Smyly is, like, a pretty decent pitcher.
The common thread between these four Mariners is that each is on his country’s roster for the World Baseball Classic, which began Monday and runs through March 22.
Robinson Cano, Nelson Cruz and Jean Segura were in a bit of a hurry after playing part of a spring training game over the weekend for the Seattle Mariners.
They had to catch a plane to Florida, where their teammates from the Dominican Republic were convening for the World Baseball Classic to defend their 2013 title.
"It's going to be really fun for us being around those guys," Segura said of his countrymen. "It's something we're going to give our all to, for sure."
Drew Smyly brings youth and experience to Mariners rotation
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Trades don't surprise Drew Smyly anymore.
At age 27, the Seattle Mariners left-hander has been dealt twice. The first swap sent him from the team that drafted and developed Smyly, the Detroit Tigers, to the Tampa Bay Rays in midseason 2014. That trade landed star pitcher David Price in Detroit.
Rays re-tool for 2017, as well as future success
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The goal of playing meaningful games in September and beyond remains the same for the cost-conscious Tampa Bay Rays, who feel a busy offseason has improved their chances of contending for a postseason berth.
Escaping the basement in the AL East won't be easy, especially after trading left-handed pitcher Drew Smyly and lead-off man Logan Forsythe, however general manager Erick Neander likes the way the roster is shaping up heading into spring training.
Stanton, Jones headline US roster for World Baseball Classic
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Miami slugger Giancarlo Stanton and Baltimore star Adam Jones are among the returnees on the 28-man U.S. World Baseball Classic roster, which also includes Colorado's Nolan Arenado, Arizona's Paul Goldschmidt, San Francisco's Buster Posey and Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen.
Seattle acquires Drew Smyly as it makes pair of trades
SEATTLE (AP) — Jerry Dipoto's 11th trade this offseason rounded out the Seattle Mariners roster with his top target.
"I've probably spent more time through the course of our offseason trying to acquire Drew Smyly than any other thing that we've done," the general manager said Wednesday.
Stumbling Jays continue poor September, lose 6-2 to Rays
TORONTO (AP) — Marcus Stroman and the Blue Jays are stumbling in September.
Drew Smyly pitched 5 2/3 innings to remain unbeaten at Rogers Centre, Alexei Ramirez and Steven Souza Jr. hit home runs and the Tampa Bay Rays beat Toronto 6-2 on Tuesday night.
Russell Martin had a two-run shot, but Toronto lost for the eighth time in 11 September games.
Toronto can't afford many more losses. The Blue Jays are tied with the Orioles for the AL wild-card spots and two games behind Boston in the East.
Smyly gets win, Ramirez homers as Rays beat Jays 6-2
TORONTO (AP) — In the middle of August, Alexei Ramirez hit a home run off Rays left-hander Drew Smyly.
Almost a month later, Ramirez connected again, this time helping give Smyly a win.
Smyly pitched 5 2/3 innings to remain unbeaten at Rogers Centre, Ramirez and Steven Souza Jr. hit home runs and Tampa Bay beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-2 on Tuesday night.
Dickerson has go-ahead hit in 7th, Rays beat Orioles 7-6
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Corey Dickerson had a go-ahead RBI double in the seventh inning to help the Tampa Bay Rays beat Baltimore 7-6 on Wednesday and deny the Orioles a three-game sweep.
Baltimore started the day one game ahead of Detroit for the second AL wild card and one game back of AL East co-leaders Boston and Toronto.
Rays’ offense stays hot in 8-4 win over Rangers
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays haven't played like a cellar-dwelling team for the past week.
Logan Forsythe homered after missing four games due to back spasms, and the Rays took two of three from the AL West-leading Texas Rangers with an 8-4 victory on Sunday.
"Texas has been in first place all year," Rays starting pitcher Drew Smyly said. "They've got very good lineup, great pitching and we beat them two out of three."
Forsythe homers in return, Rays beat Rangers 8-4
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Logan Forsythe homered after missing four games due to back spasms, and the Tampa Bay Rays took two of three from the AL West-leading Texas Rangers with an 8-4 victory on Sunday.
Forsythe hit an opposite-field, three-run shot off Martin Perez (8-9) during a five-run fourth that made it 6-2. He has six homers in his last 10 games.
Smyly solid over 7 innings, Rays beat Padres 8-2
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Drew Smyly allowed just a solo homer over seven innings of one-hit ball, Logan Forsythe and Kevin Kiermaier each homered and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the San Diego Padres 8-2 on Monday night.
Alexei Ramirez hit his fifth homer and Derek Norris walked twice, and those were the only baserunners against Smyly (5-11). The left-hander struck out four during his fifth straight start with six or more innings and two or fewer runs.
Smyly ends long personal skid; Rays beat Yankees 6-3
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Drew Smyly found his curveball and ended a long personal skid.
Smyly struck out Alex Rodriguez three times en route to stopping an 11-start winless streak, and the Tampa Bay Rays sent the New York Yankees to their third straight loss, 6-3 Saturday night.
"I've been kind of fighting my offspeed pitches all season, and when you're not locating your offspeed, it makes pitching tough," Smyly said. "I don't have an overpowering fastball, so...
