Biweekly paychecks due Dec. 21 haven't been distributed, and employees of Ellwood City Hospital say previous paychecks have bounced.

ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. (AP) — Unless you read the sign out front, you might not know where you're at when you first walk inside.
Men sit at long tables with stacks of trading cards resting beside them. Pop culture-inspired figurines — 4 inches in height — are displayed in thin plastic boxes; some holding wands, others wearing crowns and even more sporting capes and masks. Thousands of graphic novels are tucked in bookcases, lining an entire wall with serialized comics contained in one cohesive book.
Champions crowned at annual Beaver County Championships
Several athletes at or near the top of the WPIAL Class AAA and AA track and field performances lists were in action Saturday at the Beaver County Championships at Riverside High School in Ellwood City.
Spectators saw a number of those athletes produce times, heights and distances that bettered what already was recorded.
The weather cooperated with sunny skies and temperatures in the 50s.

WPIAL softball preview: District champions ready to retain titles
The WPIAL softball season will officially begin Friday, and Hempfield (Class 6A), West Allegheny (5A), Belle Vernon (4A), Ellwood City (3A), Frazier (2A) and West Greene (A) will begin defense of their district titles. Hempfield, Mt. Pleasant (4A), South Park (3A) and West Greene (A) claimed 2017 PIAA titles.

Burrell softball motivated by close loss to eventual WPIAL champion
When practice started a week ago, one of the first topics of discussion for Burrell softball coach Brian Eshbaugh and pitcher Brittany Dunn was last season's emotional playoff game against top-seeded Ellwood City.
Dunn had a no-hitter through five innings, and the Bucs led 5-2 only to see the Wolverines rally and win 6-5 on a walk-off single.
WPIAL alum Q&A with Ellwood City grad Mike Sinclair
Although wrestling isn't as publicized as sports like football and basketball, it has always been a significant part of high-school athletics in Western Pennsylvania.

Police: Man shot in home invasion was homeowner’s relative
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. (AP) — Police say an intruder shot and killed by an elderly homeowner during a home invasion attempt in Pennsylvania turned out to be a relative of the man.
Ellwood City police said 49-year-old Dennis Mercadante, of Mercer, and another man broke into the home at about 1:20 a.m. Friday. Mercadante was shot after a struggle in the hallway with 84-year-old Don Lutz. The other man fled.
Man who stalked Amish children gets 11 years for child porn
PITTSBURGH (AP) — A Pennsylvania man already convicted in state court for stalking Amish children near their school has been sentenced to more than 11 years in federal prison for collecting hundreds of child pornography videos and images online.
U.S. District Judge Mark Hornak imposed the 11-year, three-month sentence against Lucas Klobetanz because of the "library nature" of the collection, which included categories of various types of images, notably "Boy Scouts," described by prosecutors.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Former students of the Holy Redeemer Catholic School in Ellwood City frequently share memories of the time they spent there.
Being called up to the front of the classroom to diagram sentences on the chalkboard stands out for many, the Rev. Mark Thomas said with a laugh. Many also talk about their favorites of the nuns who used to run the school, formerly called the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary School.
LockFest on Allegheny River helps lower barriers for boaters
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Danny and Maria Haynes plan to put their boat on the Beaver River next weekend.
They want to get up to the Point in Pittsburgh this summer to meet friends, but there's something in the way that they've never dealt with — river locks. They've never gone through one.
"It's kind of intimidating," Maria Haynes said. "We haven't had a reason to do it."
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. (AP) — State police in Pennsylvania say an electrical worker was killed when his bucket truck tipped over as he was working on a utility pole.
Police identified the man as 54-year-old James D. George, of New Castle.
The Penn Power lineman was working Sunday in Wayne Township in Lawrence County. Police say he was in the raised bucket of a utility truck that was parked on an inclined road. They say the vehicle became unstable, moving backward before tipping onto its side.
Police: Suspect had woman at gunpoint when officer shot him
NEW CASTLE, Pa. (AP) — A man who led police on a car chase in two western Pennsylvania counties was holding a gun to a woman's head when an officer shot him several times, police said in a criminal complaint.
The suspect, Shawn Hobel, 34, of Ellwood City, was undergoing surgery Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngtown, Ohio, where his condition was not immediately available.
