Baystate to open new mental health hospital
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts hospital group has announced it will close multiple behavioral health units as part of a plan to open a new behavioral health hospital.
Baystate Health said Monday the new hospital will increase capacity by more than 30 percent for inpatient behavioral health care for adults, adolescents and children.

2 people found dead inside tent in wooded area
GREENFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Authorities in Massachusetts say two people have been found dead in a tent in an area known as a camp site for homeless people.
A spokeswoman for the Northwestern district attorney says a man and woman were found Monday afternoon in a wooded area behind a McDonald's in Greenfield.
Woman dies after being struck by vehicle on highway

Western Massachusetts celebrates its link to the dinosaurs
GREENFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Amateur paleontologists can head to western Massachusetts this weekend for the Great Greenfield DinoFest.
The second annual festival Saturday celebrates the Pioneer Valley's dinosaur history by blending history, science, and art for a day full of activities. The area is famous for its dinosaur fossils.
The event is a partnership between the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association and Piti Theatre.
Tons of trash cleaned from Connecticut River in 4 states
GREENFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Thousands of volunteers helped collect an estimated 50 tons of trash from the Connecticut River and its tributaries in four states last week.
Organizers of the Connecticut River Conservancy's 22nd Source to Sea Cleanup say the trash collected last Friday and Saturday in New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut included nearly 1,000 tires, junked cars and even a 1,500-gallon fuel tank.

Damaged headstones repaired at cemetery dating to 1800s
MORRISTOWN, Ind. (AP) — A central Indiana company has finished repairing nearly two dozen headstones that vandals damaged in cemetery dating to the early 1800s.
The 22 headstones toppled, broken or otherwise damaged at the Davis-Bennet Cemetery in Morristown included one belonging to a Revolutionary War veteran and his wife.
Four juveniles allegedly damaged the headstones, causing nearly $10,000 in damage to the markers at the cemetery 25 miles (40 kilometers) southeast of Indianapolis.

Homeless campers to be ordered off town common
GREENFIELD, Mass. (AP) — More than 20 homeless people who have been camping for weeks in a town common in northern Massachusetts are being ordered off the property by local officials.

Police: 2 men arrested for trafficking cocaine
GREENFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Two men have been arrested for trafficking cocaine in western Massachusetts.
State police arrested 38-year-old Aaron Belcher, and 21-year-old Raven Sullivan, both of Springfield, during a traffic stop on the highway near Greenfield Saturday night.
A search of the car yielded 37 grams of cocaine and an open container of alcohol. Belcher and Sullivan are charged with trafficking and conspiracy to violate a drug law.
GREENFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Two Massachusetts residents convicted of killing an elderly married couple during a home invasion are going to prison for the rest of their lives.
Joshua Hart and Brittany Smith, both of Athol, were sentenced Thursday to mandatory sentences of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
They were convicted in separate trials of two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of 95-year-old Thomas Harty and 77-year-old Joanna Fisher.

Brittany Smith, of Athol, was convicted Monday by a Franklin Superior Court jury in the October 2016 home invasion in Orange that led to the deaths of Thomas Harty and Joanna Fisher. Harty died at the scene, while Fisher, who used a wheelchair, died several weeks later.

The hospital, however, has scheduled a three-day lockout to start at 7 p.m. Tuesday, when it will bring in temporary nurses.
GREENFIELD, Ind. (AP) — Police in central Indiana say they've arrested a 12-year-old boy after a written threat of a school shooting was found at a school.
The threat was found on a piece of paper this week at Greenfield Intermediate School. Resource officers and school officials traced the threat back to the boy, who was arrested. Police say the note indicated that the writer had a gun in a locker, but no weapons were found.
Police: Man thrown from snowmobile and killed in crash
LEMINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Vermont officials say a Massachusetts man has died in a snowmobile crash.
Police say 53-year-old Bruce Bohonowicz, of Greenfield, was driving his snowmobile on a trail in Lemington when he drove off the trail at a sharp curve. They say Bohonowicz was thrown from the snowmobile and collided with a nearby tree.
First responders pronounced the man dead at the scene.
Senate backs bill aimed to improve handling of rape evidence
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A bill aimed at improving the way authorities handle sexual assault evidence has won Indiana Senate approval.
The measure by Republican Sen. Michael Crider of Greenfield passed Tuesday on a 48-0 vote.
It calls for a study of the best way to track and process evidence so it's handled in a timely fashion.

Athol man convicted of child rape faces sentencing
GREENFIELD, Mass. (AP) — An Athol man convicted of child molestation charges will learn how much time he'll spend in prison.
The Northwestern district attorney's office says 31-year-old Jeremy Currier is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Michael Callan in Franklin Superior Court on Wednesday.
Currier was found guilty Thursday of aggravated rape and abuse of a child and indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 by a jury that deliberated seven hours.
Ex-teacher’s aide violates probation in child seduction case
GREENFIELD, Ind. (AP) — Central Indiana prosecutors say a former teacher's aide convicted of having sex with a student has violated the terms of her probation for a third time.
A Hancock County judge ordered Kisha Nuckols held without bond Monday until a March 1 fact-finding hearing on allegations she violated her probation by failing to register a smartphone with authorities.
A message seeking comment was left Tuesday with Nuckols' attorney.

The Greenfield Police Department took to Facebook on Saturday to ask for the public's help in figuring out the backstory behind the handwritten letter. Police say the letter is dated April 19, 1944, and was penned by a man who identified himself only as Walter.

Massachusetts city sues opioid makers, distributors
GREENFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Greenfield filed a federal lawsuit Thursday against several distributors and manufacturers of opioid medications, joining a growing list of municipalities and states seeking to recoup the cost of dealing with the epidemic.
The city is the first municipality in Massachusetts to file such a suit, said Pete Merrigan, of Sweeney Merrigan, the city's law firm. Dozens of states, counties, municipalities and even hospitals across the country have filed similar lawsuits.
5 charged with importing, distributing oxycodone
GREENFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Authorities have arrested five people they say were involved in a scheme to import large quantities of oxycodone from China for distribution throughout an area of western Massachusetts.
The Northwestern district attorney's office announced Monday that a grand jury had indicted the alleged ringleaders of the operation, 47-year-old Yvette Judd and 50-year-old William Judd, who have addresses in Greenfield and Florida.
