PITTSBURGH (AP) — Outfielder Lonnie Chisenhall has agreed to a $2.75 million, one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates, leaving the Cleveland Indians after eight seasons.
The Pirates are in need of help in the outfield while right fielder Gregory Polanco recovers from surgery on his left shoulder. Polanco is expected to be out until May after dislocating the shoulder during an awkward slide into second base in September.
Pirates OF Polanco out 7-9 months after shoulder surgery
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Gregory Polanco could be out until next June after having surgery on his left shoulder.
The Pirates made the announcement on Friday, which was Polanco's 27th birthday.

Marlins-Pirates game postponed because of rain
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Sunday's game between the Miami Marlins and Pittsburgh Pirates was cancelled more than four hours before its scheduled 1:35 p.m. ET start time because of heavy rain that was expected to continue into the evening.

Pirates’ Gregory Polanco will miss the rest of the season
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pirates right fielder Gregory Polanco, the team's home run and RBIs leader, will miss the remainder of the season because of a bone bruise in his left knee.
Polanco was injured Friday night and left the Pirates' 5-3 win over the Miami Marlins in the sixth inning when he slid awkwardly into second base on a double. He also strained his left shoulder, Pittsburgh said Saturday.
He is hitting .254 with 23 homers and 81 RBIs. Polanco also had a team-high 61 extra-base hits.
Luplow hits tiebreaking HR, Pirates beat Marlins 5-3
PITTSBURGH (AP) — When veteran pitcher Chris Archer faltered and regular right fielder Gregory Polanco left a game Friday night against Miami with an injury, Pittsburgh turned to the kids to get the job done.
Kevin Kramer recorded his first major league hit and RBI, fellow rookie Jordan Luplow hit a tiebreaking two-run home run and the Pirates rallied to beat the Marlins 5-3.
Marte’s homer, Polanco’s double send Pirates past Reds 7-3
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Before he took the mound Tuesday night, Pirates starter Joe Musgrove just didn't feel right while warming up in the bullpen.
In his quest to get things straightened out, he made a quick change to his approach.
That tactic seemed to work, as Musgrove took a shutout into the seventh inning for Pittsburgh in a 7-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Starling Marte hit a two-run homer and Gregory Polanco had a two-run double for the Pirates.
Polanco snaps tie in eighth as Pirates beat Braves 3-2
ATLANTA (AP) — Jameson Taillon extended the Atlanta Braves' home struggles, leaving the NL East tight entering the final month of the season.
Gregory Polanco's eighth-inning single drove in Adam Frazier with the tiebreaking run, Taillon allowed only two runs and the Pittsburgh Pirates recovered after blowing a two-run lead to beat the Braves 3-2 on Friday night.
Moustakas, Piña, Schoop go deep as Brewers bash Pirates 7-4
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Chris Archer blamed nobody but himself for the Pittsburgh Pirates' loss to Milwaukee.
Mike Moustakas and Manny Piña each hit a two-run homer in the third inning, Jonathan Schoop went deep in the seventh and the Brewers beat the Pirates 7-4 on Sunday.
The Brewers rocked Archer (4-7) for six runs and six hits in the third, when two close calls in the outfield started the trouble for Pittsburgh.
Acuna hits leadoff HR, Braves edge Bucs 2-1 for 3-game sweep
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jonny Venters thought he had given up a tying home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.
"It sounded loud," the Atlanta Braves' reliever said. "I thought it was gone."
Gregory Polanco's drive to right field hit off the top of the 21-foot wall, however, and he was held to a double.
Venters then got Francisco Cervelli to hit a game-ending comebacker, preserving Atlanta's 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night.

Pirates: MLB to discipline Latin American scouting head
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates say Major League Baseball intends to discipline their director of Latin American scouting for rules violations, and the team announced it will not renew Rene Gayo's contract when it expires next month.
The Pirates said in a statement Wednesday they have a "profound disappointment in the breach of trust that was the subject of MLB's investigation."
The Athletic reported Gayo accepted an improper payment.
The Pirates have a chance to maybe be somewhat halfway decent next year.
That's basically what ESPN says in their way-too-early 2018 MLB power rankings.
The rankings, which were posted just after the Houston Astros won the World Series in Game 7 on Wednesday night, have the Pirates, who were 75-87 this year, at No. 13 for next year, with part of the following explanation:
Strasburg cruises, Zimmerman homers twice; Nats beat Pirates
WASHINGTON (AP) — Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg showed he is ready for the postseason.
He had another strong performance in Washington's 6-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night.
The NL East champion Nationals are set to host the Chicago Cubs next Friday in the NL Division Series after winning their fourth division title in six years. Washington manager Dusty Baker hasn't yet tipped his hand on a Game 1 starter, but Strasburg made an emphatic case with another stellar effort.
Strasburg cruises, Zimmerman homers twice; Nats beat Pirates
WASHINGTON (AP) — Stephen Strasburg pitched 7 2/3 shutout innings and Ryan Zimmerman homered twice to help the Washington Nationals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-1 on Friday night.
Strasburg gave up two hits and two walks while striking out eight. He's 5-1 with a 0.84 ERA since returning from the disabled list on Aug. 19. Strasburg (15-4) retired the first 14 batters before Gregory Polanco's hard smash bounced off a diving Zimmerman at first base for the Pirates' first hit.
Polanco’s home run helps Pirates to 10-6 win over Padres
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Gregory Polanco put himself into an exclusive club and the Pirates into the lead.
Polanco hit a go-ahead, three-run homer into the Allegheny River during a six-run seventh inning, and Pittsburgh rallied for a 10-6 victory over the San Diego Padres on Friday night. Twenty-nine different players have hit 43 home runs into the river since the ballpark opened in 2001.
Major League Baseball Capsules
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Gregory Polanco homered, Chris Stewart added three hits and the Pittsburgh Pirates completed a four-game sweep of the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers with a 4-2 victory on Thursday.
The Pirates have won 11 of 13 and moved within three games of Milwaukee in a division that's tightened up since the All-Star break. The Brewers have lost five straight, cutting their lead to one game over the idle Chicago Cubs.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates spent a good portion of the first half of the season trying — and failing — to find any sort of traction.
Once they'd figure out one problem, another would pop up. If it wasn't the bullpen, it was the mess left by outfielder Starling Marte's 80-game steroid suspension. Or the back end of the starting rotation. Or the massive funk that baffled star center fielder Andrew McCutchen.
Two hot weeks have changed the discussion dramatically.
Polanco goes 4 for 4, Pirates top Brewers 4-2
PITTSBURGH (AP) — By his own admission, it used to take Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Gregory Polanco a day — sometimes more — to get over a mental mistake like his goof last week against St. Louis, when Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina picked a lackadaisical Polanco off third base to thwart a rally.
Not anymore. These days, Polanco moves on quickly, trying to keep one mental lapse from bleeding into another.
CHICAGO (AP) — Although Gregory Polanco hasn't always lived up to his advance billing, he showed Saturday night why there was so much hype when he was promoted to the major leagues three years ago.
Polanco hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and Ivan Nova pitched three-hit ball into the seventh, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 4-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs.
CHICAGO (AP) — Gregory Polanco hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and Ivan Nova pitched three-hit ball into the seventh, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 4-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday night.
Josh Bell had three hits and two runs scored, while Francisco Cervelli and Jordy Mercer each drove in a run for the Pirates.
Ian Happ and Kyle Schwarber had back-to-back home runs for Chicago, which has not won consecutive games since a three-game streak June 18-20.
Polanco, McCutchen lead Pirates past Phillies
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Josh Bell didn't let a defensive miscue get him down. He just made up for it with his bat.
Bell homered, doubled and drove in three runs, and Gregory Polanco had four hits with a home run and two RBIs to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night.
Andrew McCutchen added three hits with two doubles for the Pirates, who have won three straight.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Josh Harrison knows the signs. They're unmissable. Solid starting pitching. Stellar work by the bullpen. Timely hits and aggressive baserunning.
It's a formula that carried the Pittsburgh Pirates to the playoffs from 2013-15, one that is starting to pop up a little more regularly as Pittsburgh tries to keep pace in a lukewarm National League Central race.
Pirates RF Polanco exits with right ankle injury
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pirates right fielder Gregory Polanco was carted off the field at PNC Park on Monday after injuring his right ankle against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
ATLANTA (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates have activated outfielder Gregory Polanco from the 10-day disabled list.
The move was announced before Thursday's game against the Atlanta Braves.
Polanco was having a disappointing season, hitting .252 with one homer and nine RBIs, when he was sidelined with a strained left hamstring.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Adam Frazier is making the most of his chance as Pittsburgh's new left fielder.
Frazier had a career-high four RBIs, Josh Bell and John Jaso homered, and Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Washington Nationals 10-4 on Thursday.
Frazier hit a two-run double in the sixth inning and a two-run single in the seventh to help the Pirates pull away after Jaso's solo home run in the fifth inning broke a 4-4 tie. Frazier, the leadoff hitter, is 10 for 20 in his last four games.
PHOENIX (AP) — So many great outings for Zack Greinke yet he never has thrown a no-hitter.
The 33-year-old right-hander came tantalizingly close in Arizona's 2-1 victory over Pittsburgh Thursday night.
Gregory Polanco ruined the bid with a leadoff home run in the eighth inning.
PHOENIX (AP) — Zack Greinke's bid for his first career no-hitter ended when Gregory Polanco of the Pittsburgh Pirates led off the eighth inning with first home run of the season.
Polanco's shot to right field came on a 2-2 pitch. He had narrowly missed a homer with a foul ball to right earlier in the at bat.
The homer cut Arizona's lead to 2-1.
Greinke, with a vicious slider doing most of the damage, has struck out 11. Only one batter has reached base for the Pirates through seven innings.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Andrew McCutchen doubled to lead off the seventh inning, ending Julio Urias' no-hit bid for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night.
The Pittsburgh Pirates star ripped a 2-2 pitch into the left field corner that bounced over the wall. Left fielder Andrew Toles appeared to injure his right knee attempting to make a diving catch and left the game.
CHICAGO (AP) — Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Gregory Polanco has been scratched from Saturday's lineup against the Chicago Cubs because of a groin injury.
Josh Harrison took Polanco's place in left field against the Cubs. Alen Hanson will start at second base.
Polanco was 1 for 4 with a stolen base in Friday's 4-2 win over Chicago.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Clint Hurdle's advice to his players on how to handle R.A. Dickey's dancing, darting knuckleball was pretty simple: don't overthink it and don't try to be a hero.
BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) — Pirates outfielder Gregory Polanco will not travel with the team when it heads north on Thursday for two exhibition games in Montreal.
Polanco, projected to be the Pirates' starting left fielder, has played in just one spring training game since returning from his run with the Dominican Republic team in the World Baseball Classic, where he hit .579 in five games.
