COLUMN: Jake Fromm clear leader at quarterback position
The Georgia football team had high hopes for the 2017 season. Those hopes were nearly crushed before the team could finish one half of football.
On the third drive of the Bulldogs’ opening game, sophomore quarterback Jacob Eason went down with a knee injury. A late hit out-of-bounds by an Appalachian State University defender caused Eason to leave the game and miss the team’s next three games.
Eason back home at Washington, but ready to sit for a year
SEATTLE (AP) — Jacob Eason is ready to become arguably the most highly touted scout team quarterback in the country.
The former Georgia starter is nearing the end of his first spring with Washington and preparing for a season spent as a spectator. But waiting at the end of that long year of watching is the expectation that when 2019 begins, the transfer will be the Huskies' starter.
Washington welcomes home Georgia transfer QB Jacob Eason
SEATTLE (AP) — Washington announced former Georgia quarterback Jacob Eason is transferring to the Huskies.
Eason was a five-star recruit from Lake Stevens High School near Seattle. He signed with Georgia in 2016 and started as a freshman, but injured his knee in last season's opener and never could regain his starting job from freshman Jake Fromm. Georgia went to the national title game with Fromm and soon after Eason said he was transferring back home.
QB Jacob Eason leaving Georgia after losing job to Fromm
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Quarterback Jacob Eason said Friday he is leaving Georgia, an expected decision after he lost his starting job to freshman Jake Fromm.
Eason made the announcement on his Twitter account.
"Thank you UGA for an incredible two years," he wrote. "The memories and relationships I have made will truly last a lifetime. I will miss suiting up in red and black, but Athens will always be a place I can call home."
Report: Jacob Eason expected to transfer to Washington
According to a report from the Seattle Times, Georgia quarterback Jacob Eason is expected to transfer to Washington now that Georgia’s 2017 season has concluded.
Eason, who started 12 games for the Bulldogs in 2016 and entered the 2017 season as the starter, is a former five-star recruit from the town of Lake Stevens, Washington.
Base on NCAA rules, Eason would have to sit out one year at Washington, giving him two years of college eligibility left in the 2019 and 2020 seasons.
After losing job, Eason supports Fromm for Dogs in Rose Bowl
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jacob Eason spends part of almost every day with Jake Fromm, the kid who took his job.
Plenty of nights, too. The two Georgia quarterbacks are road roommates, including this week at the Rose Bowl, and Eason has been known to snore.
"I've woken up to a pillow in my face a couple of times," Eason said.
Everybody around the Bulldogs realizes that Eason's relationship with Fromm could be unbearably awkward.
Vanderbilt expecting to play vs No. 5 Georgia’s freshman QB
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason isn't buying any of Kirby Smart's talk about not knowing whether Jake Fromm or Jacob Eason will start at quarterback for the fifth-ranked Bulldogs on Saturday.
No. 5 Georgia puts perfect start on line visiting Vanderbilt
No. 5 Georgia (5-0, 2-0 SEC) at Vanderbilt (3-2, 0-2), Saturday, Noon ET (ESPN).
Line: Georgia by 17 ½.
Series record: Georgia leads 55-20-2.
WHAT'S AT STAKE
The Bulldogs are looking to remain perfect overall and in the SEC on their way to a showdown with Florida on Oct. 28 for control of the Eastern Division. Vanderbilt needs a second straight win over Georgia to split a four-game stretch against Top 25 opponents.
Smart won’t say who No. 5 Georgia will start at QB this week
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Georgia coach Kirby Smart isn't giving anything away regarding his starting quarterback decision this week.
It's part of his plan to keep Jake Fromm and Jacob Eason competing for the job and to prevent Vanderbilt from knowing his plans.
But Smart also wants his players to practice as if the season has not yet begun. He doesn't want overconfidence to creep in, not with Georgia No. 5 in The Associated Press poll and off to its best start in five years.
UT defense prepares for Georgia’s ‘composed’ freshman QB
KNOXVILLE — Tennessee players and coaches spent much of their time leading up to last year’s game against Georgia talking about a talented freshman quarterback. They’re doing the same this year.
For the second straight season the Vols will square off against a five-star freshman Bulldog under center as Jake Fromm will start in place of the injured Jacob Eason. And despite seeing his first college action, seventh-ranked Georgia hasn’t missed a beat since the Peach State native took over.
QB Eason moving closer to return from injury for No. 7 Dogs
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Jacob Eason could be moving closer to playing again for No. 7 Georgia.

Georgia’s Eason (knee) back at practice, no word on return
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Georgia quarterback Jacob Eason is back at practice but it's not known if he'll be cleared to play Saturday when the 11th-ranked Bulldogs host No. 17 Mississippi State.
Eason started in 2016 as a freshman but strained a ligament in his left knee in Georgia's season-opening victory over Appalachian State. Touted freshman Jake Fromm has played well since taking over, most notably leading Georgia (3-0) to a victory at Notre Dame in his first college start.
Widespread transfers leave plenty of teams lacking QB depth
The wave of quarterback transfers across college football has left several Top 25 programs without proven depth at that position.

Opponent Outlook: Identifying strengths, weaknesses of Georgia
Expectations are high at Georgia.
Even with starting quarterback Jacob Eason temporarily sidelined with a sprained knee, the Bulldogs are still considered one of the favorites to win the SEC’s East Division. A dynamic running game and stingy defense should carry Georgia in head coach Kirby Smart’s second season leading the program.
Georgia QB Eason to miss Notre Dame game with sprained knee
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Quarterback Jacob Eason will not play in No. 15 Georgia's game at Notre Dame after spraining his left knee in last week's win over Appalachian State.

Fromm replaces Eason, leads Georgia past App State, 31-10
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — There was no panic on the Georgia sideline when starting quarterback Jacob Eason limped off the field.
Though he's a freshman, backup Jake Fromm already has convinced his coach and teammates he's not easily intimidated.
Fromm led three first-half touchdown drives after Eason sprained his left knee, helping No. 15 Georgia beat Appalachian State 31-10 on Saturday night.
No. 15 Georgia loses QB Jacob Eason to knee injury
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Quarterback Jacob Eason has left No. 15 Georgia's game against Appalachian State because of a left knee injury, leaving the Bulldogs with freshman Jake Fromm to guide the offense.

Eason, Chubb keys to Georgia’s hopes for offensive revival
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — There was a glaring omission in Georgia's game-week notes package released to media on Monday — no depth chart for the No. 15 Bulldogs.
Second-year coach Kirby Smart wants to go through the final week of practice for Saturday's season-opening visit from Appalachian State before revealing his starters and backups.
Asked Monday about his starting offensive line, Smart said "We haven't determined it yet."
Georgia QB Eason has renewed confidence entering 2nd season
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — A long list of national high school honors made Jacob Eason appear bound for immediate success at Georgia as a freshman in 2016.
The reality of making that big step from high school in Lake Stevens, Washington, to the Southeastern Conference was far different.
Sure, Eason's right arm was as powerful as advertised. Arm strength wasn't enough to make his freshman season a success.
Sapakoff: Picking an Alabama-Georgia SEC title game; Gamecocks third place
HOOVER, Ala. – Ahead of Friday’s release of the SEC Media Days poll, here is order-of-finish I turned in (minus the snarky comments about Kentucky and Ole Miss):
All it takes is a little improvement from sophomore quarterback Jacob Eason to ride the Nick Chubb-Sony Michel train
The Gators might be a better overall team than the one that won a very weak SEC East in 2016
Sapakoff: Gamecocks can claw up to third place in SEC Saban Division
HOOVER, Ala. – Georgia football players are convinced they will have a sturdier offensive line plus improved passing from sophomore Jacob Eason to complement the ferocious 1-2 running back punch of Nick Chubb and Sony Michel.
“When you come to the University of Georgia, the expectation is to win championships,” Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart said Tuesday at SEC Media Days.
Fromm shines, Eason ‘electric’ at times in Dogs’ spring game
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Georgia quarterbacks Jacob Eason and Jake Fromm had the stage Saturday, when the Bulldogs' G-Day spring game was designed to feature the passing game.
The results were mixed, especially for Eason, the sophomore returning starter .
More experienced Jacob Eason ‘ready to go’ as Georgia’s QB
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Jacob Eason says having a year's experience makes for "a whole new world" leading Georgia's offense.
In spring practice a year ago, Eason was only weeks removed from high school in Lake Stevens, Washington. The quarterback's inexperience showed as he started the final 12 games of a disappointing 8-5 season.
Georgia’s Smart expects QB Fromm to push Eason this spring
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Kirby Smart wants Georgia's 18 returning starters on offense and defense to feel the heat of competition this spring.
That includes quarterback Jacob Eason.
Smart opened his second spring practice as coach on Tuesday. Familiarity in Smart's system can make players more confident about their assignments, but the coach doesn't want that feeling of comfort to go too far.
Georgia QB and punter Ramsey, DB Wilkerson to transfer
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Brice Ramsey, who never rose to the top of Georgia's depth chart at quarterback but finished the 2016 season as the team's starting punter, is transferring.
Georgia said Tuesday Ramsey and defensive back Reggie Wilkerson will complete their degrees in May and then transfer for their final seasons of eligibility. Wilkerson played in five games in 2016.
Georgia to lean heavily on RBs Chubb, Michel in 2017
Kirby Smart capped his debut season at Georgia with a smile.
There were too many frowns for the coach along the way.
A strong running game led by Nick Chubb and Sony Michel in Georgia's 31-23 Liberty Bowl win over TCU on Friday gave Smart more reason to celebrate the decisions by the junior running backs to return in 2017.

Georgia’s Eason thriving in late-game pressure situations
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Georgia freshman Jacob Eason is proving he can be trusted in the closing minutes.
In fact, the young quarterback's best play has come in high-pressure situations late in games, providing confidence that will be needed in Saturday's visit from No. 8 Auburn.
