Browns release veteran linebacker Jamie Collins
CLEVELAND (AP) — Jamie Collins had flashes of brilliance with the Browns. Not nearly enough of them, though.
Cleveland released the veteran linebacker on Wednesday with two years remaining...
Browns linebacker Collins recovering from knee surgery
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Cleveland Browns linebacker Jamie Collins is recovering from right knee surgery performed two weeks ago.
Collins tore a medial collateral ligament in his knee on Nov. 12, ending his season. The former Pro Bowler with New England got hurt when his knee got twisted while he was returning an interception during the first quarter of a loss to the Detroit Lions.
Browns place defenders Ogbah, Meder on injured reserve
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Browns signed free safety Justin Currie and promoted end Tyrone Holmes from the practice squad to help their banged-up defense.
They had two open spots on their active roster after placing starting end Emmanuel Ogbah (broken right foot) and tackle Jamie Meder (sprained ankle) on injured reserve. Ogbah and Meder were both injured in Sunday's 19-7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Browns place linebacker Jamie Collins on injured reserve
CLEVELAND (AP) — Browns linebacker Jamie Collins has been placed on injured reserve after suffering a season-ending knee injury.
Collins tore the MCL in his right knee while returning an interception in the first quarter of Sunday's loss to the Detroit Lions. The 27-year-old former Pro Bowler is one of the Browns' best players and they'll have to try to get their first win without him.
Browns LB Collins out rest of season with right knee sprain
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — As if the winless Browns don't have enough troubles, they'll play the rest of the season without starting linebacker Jamie Collins.
One of Cleveland's best defensive players, Collins sustained a torn medical collateral ligament in Sunday's loss to Detroit and will be sidelined until 2018. Collins was injured while returning an interception during the first quarter and didn't come back.
Justin Rogers’ Lions grades: Stafford, offense get their act together
Detroit – Justin Rogers grades the Detroit Lions' performance in Sunday's 38-24 win over the Cleveland Browns.
Detroit – It wasn't easy, at least not as easy as it you would have hoped given the opponent, but the Detroit Lions' shook up a sluggish start and surged past the winless Clevleland Browns down the stretch for a 38-24 victory at Ford Field on Sunday.
The Browns jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead in the opening quarter thanks to a pair of defensive breakdowns by cornerback Nevin Lawson.
Defensive end Everson Griffen and right tackle Mike Remmers were unable to practice Wednesday, the Vikings first session since returning from the bye week.
Remmers remains in the concussion protocol 10 days after he was pulled from the Vikings 33-16 victory over the Browns in London. He seemingly injured his head while trying to cut block Browns linebacker Jamie Collins Sr. on the fifth snap of the game. Tackle Rashod Hill took Remmers place at the start of Wednesdays practice.
CLEVELAND (AP) — Demario Davis spent one long, losing season in Cleveland. The linebacker is going back where he started.
Davis is returning to the New York Jets after being traded Thursday by the Browns for safety Calvin Pryor.
The 28-year-old Davis spent four seasons with the Jets, who drafted him in the third round in 2012. He signed a two-year, $8 million contract with Cleveland as an unrestricted free agent before the 2016 season, which ended with the Browns going 1-15.
FOXBORO — The red, no-contact jersey on Jonathan Freeny at Thursday’s organized team activity served as a reminder how far the Patriots linebacker needs to go before he’s where he wants to be.
For now, just being on the field, even if it’s on the one behind Gillette Stadium and not inside it, is encouraging.
“It just feels good to be back out there, getting back into football, working with my teammates,” Freeny said. “Just trying to work every day to get better, work on my craft.”
Patriots notebook: NFL will consider proposal outlawing players from leaping over line of scrimmage to block kicks
Watching former Patriots linebacker Jamie Collins leap over the line to block a Colts extra point a few years ago was one of the more scintillating plays during that season. Ditto Shea McClellin blocking a field goal against the Ravens this past year, especially given how pivotal that play was in the Patriots victory.
The Patriots have their foot on the NFL’s throat.
The Super Bowl champions acquired wide receiver Brandin Cooks from the Saints last night in a trade that also included three draft picks, according to a source.
The Pats sent the Saints their first-round pick (No.?32 overall) and the third-round compensatory selection (No.?103) that they received from the Browns in the Jamie Collins swap. And the Saints included their fourth-round pick (No.?118) in the package with Cooks.
Browns lower prices for tickets after 1-15 season
CLEVELAND (AP) — Coming off a deplorable 1-15 season, the Cleveland Browns have lowered the price of many tickets.
The Browns said reducing ticket prices "was the right thing to do for our fans." Tickets will be decreased in 40 percent of FirstEnergy Stadium.
Browns nearing contract with linebacker Jamie Collins
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Browns let several of their top free agents slip away last year. They've got their arms wrapped around a new one now.
Cleveland is close to finalizing a multi-year contract with talented linebacker Jamie Collins, who joined the team midway through its 1-15 season but showed the Browns that he's a player worth keeping for a long time.
CBSSports.com first reported the Browns and Collins had made significant progress on a contract, which could be completed as early as Friday.
1. THE BRADY EXILE
The Deflategate saga finally came to a head in April when the 2nd Court of U.S. Appeals reinstated Tom Brady’s four-game suspension. Brady resigned himself to the punishment rather than fight it further. The Patriots went 3-1 in his absence with Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett taking the snaps. Since returning, Brady has played at a level that has him squarely in the conversation for MVP.
Patriots’ defense deficient in 1st game without Collins
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The Patriots surprised many around the NFL last month when they traded linebacker Jamie Collins to the Cleveland Browns.
It created yet another adjustment for a defense that was already dealing with an injury to linebacker Jonathan Freeny and the offseason trade of pass rusher Chandler Jones.
FOXBORO — The Patriots defense hasn’t exactly given anyone reason to believe it can make the big stops when the calendar turns to January and the postseason begins.
And that was before Bill Belichick traded away linebacker Jamie Collins, one of the team’s best defensive playmakers. Last night’s showing against the Seattle Seahawks merely provided more questions and concerns about the unit, which was playing its first game without Collins, traded to the Cleveland Browns 14 days ago.
When Tom Brady runs for president after he retires from football in about 10 years, then bring up the Trump vote, but now it’s all about Seattle.
And a now divided locker room!
Yes, the Pats are back, and, after another boring Pats-less bye week, there is trouble at The Stadium At The Mall, and it’s not because Jamie Collins is in Cleveland. It’s that Glenn Gronkowski is no longer a practice squader.
Former Patriots linebacker Jamie Collins got his first opportunity yesterday to address some critical jabs that had been thrown in his direction since Monday’s trade.
Specifically, reporters in Cleveland asked him about some alleged financial demands and his on-field play, which both had been scrutinized this week since the Pats shipped him to the Browns for a conditional draft pick.
Guregian: With Collins and Jones gone, Patriots defense in dire need of some playmakers
FOXBORO — Something’s broken with the defense, and Bill Belichick aims to fix it.
Forget the nifty points allowed per game average, the Patriots defense doesn’t get a pass, or a passing grade from Belichick. That much seems pretty obvious. It’s just interesting to see how the Hoodie is tackling the problem.
The Patriots are in the midst of a potential Super Bowl run, but they’ll have to finish the job without marquee linebacker Jamie Collins.
The Pats surprisingly traded Collins to the Cleveland Browns yesterday for a conditional fourth-round draft pick in 2018. If the Browns are awarded a compensatory third-round pick in 2017 due to the loss of center Alex Mack, they’ll reportedly ship that to the Patriots. Otherwise, the Pats will get a fourth-rounder in 2018.
Patriots Notebook: Cornerback competition continues
The trade yesterday of Jamie Collins to the Cleveland Browns may leave a void in the middle of the Patriots defense, but linebacker isn’t the only position that’s up for grabs on that side of the ball.Halfway through the season, there’s still a competition raging for the No.?2 cornerback spot.
Guregian: Collins trade a shock, but Bill Belichick deserves benefit of doubt
We’ve traveled down this road before. We’ve seen Bill Belichick trade away or release big-time Patriots stars at different points in his 17 seasons at the helm in Foxboro.
Jamie Collins certainly isn’t the first.
Belichick also sent out shock waves when he dumped Lawyer Milloy (2003), Richard Seymour (2009), Randy Moss (2010) and Logan Mankins (2014), just to name a few.
Jay Cutler threw for 252 yards and a TD after missing five games with a thumb injury, rookie Jordan Howard ran for a career-high 153 yards and a TD, and the Bears stunned the Minnesota Vikings, 20-10, Monday night in Chicago.
The Bears (2-6) sacked Sam Bradford five times while handing the NFC North-leading Vikings (5-2) their second straight loss.
Alshon Jeffery got his first touchdown reception of the season, and Chicago outgained Minnesota 403 yards to 258.
Browns acquire Pro Bowl linebacker Collins from Patriots
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — The winless Cleveland Browns were perceived to be sellers, not buyers, on the eve of the NFL's trade deadline. They proved that theory wrong Monday.
Cleveland acquired Pro Bowl linebacker Jamie Collins from the Patriots in exchange for a conditional third-round draft choice, bolstering a defense that has allowed the most yards in the league.
Browns acquire LB Jamie Collins from Patriots
The Cleveland Browns acquired linebacker Jamie Collins from New England on Monday, one day before the NFL's trade deadline.
A second-round draft pick in 2013, Collins has been one of the Patriots' better defensive players for just over three seasons, but his rookie contract ends after this season. The Patriots will get a conditional third-round selection for Collins, 27.
The 6-foot-3, 250-pound Collins missed one game this season with a hip injury. He has 43 combined tackles and two interceptions.
Jamie Collins plays his game, not what others want
FOXBORO — The expectations for linebacker Jamie Collins are so absurdly extraordinary that a standard Sunday performance can, perhaps unfairly, cause some to wonder if something is amiss.
No leaping field-goal block, running interception or strip sack? Maybe he is human after all.
Collins gets a kick out of the high bar levied upon him, laughing at the line of questioning yesterday during his first interview since Sept. 28.
Logan Ryan quietly growing in importance to Patriots
FOXBORO -- Cornerback Logan Ryan’s importance over the last two seasons shouldn’t be dismissed.
FOXBORO — Teammates of Patriots linebacker Jamie Collins don’t even know whether or not they should be impressed anymore.
They know he’s a freak. They know he is a uniquely gifted playmaker. And they know, after watching him at practice on a daily basis, he’ll replicate that stuff on the game field.
“The dude is a highlight reel,” linebacker Dont’a Hightower said yesterday for the millionth time.
Dont’a Hightower says the Patriots defense has something special planned.
Not because the players are listening to all the hype and media boasts pumping up the unit since the start of training camp.
And not because they’re paying attention to anyone already hailing them an elite, top-five defense.
Garoppolo mostly solid in debut as Pats beat Saints 34-22
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Jimmy Garoppolo made his preseason debut, spreading the ball around for 168 yards, and Jamie Collins added a 43-yard interception return for a touchdown as the New England Patriots beat the New Orleans Saints 34-22 on Thursday night.
Garoppolo played the entire first half as he preps to start the first four games of the regular season in place of Tom Brady, who will be serving a suspension for his involvement in the "Deflategate" case. Brady was...
FOXBORO — Jamie Collins was robbed of his bid for a defensive player of the year award in 2015.
With a nasty virus buried deep in the past, Collins looks primed for another hard charge for one of the NFL’s most prestigious honors. He has a team-high four pass breakups to go along with one interception in the Patriots’ 11 training camp practices, and running backs have frequently come face-to-chest with the heat-seeking linebacker during ball-carrying...
