Cubs-Nationals rained out, will play doubleheader Saturday
WASHINGTON (AP) — The game between the Chicago Cubs and Washington Nationals was postponed Friday night after two rain delays totaling more than four hours. It was scoreless in the top of the second inning when it was called.
The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 3:05 p.m.
A thunderstorm delayed the start of the game 81 minutes, but the rain had stopped when play began. Heavy rain and lightning returned with two outs and nobody on in the top of the second inning.
Bryce Harper on GM Mike Rizzo: ‘One of the best’
Nationals president of baseball operations and general manager Mike Rizzo and his staff pulled off a coup in December2014 as they acquired shortstop Trea Turner and pitcher Joe Ross from the San Diego Padres in a three-way deal that also included Tampa Bay.
Benoit can double earnings to $2 million with Nationals
WASHINGTON (AP) — Joaquin Benoit can earn $1 million in performance bonuses in addition to his $1 million base salary with the Washington Nationals.
Washington announced the deal with the 40-year-old reliever on Wednesday and opened a roster spot by placing pitcher Joe Ross on the 60-day disabled list as he recovers from Tommy John surgery in July.
Benoit would get $100,000 each for 30, 35, 40 and 45 pitching appearances, and $200,000 apiece for 50, 55 and 60.
Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg situated atop Nationals rotation
Joe Ross passed quietly through the Washington Nationals' clubhouse in the final two months of the season, there, but not really.
Ross had Tommy John surgery July 19 to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. His uncertain status for next season is a microcosm of the back-end of the Washington Nationals' rotation. They have four clear starters for next season. It's unclear who will be the fifth or sixth.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Washington right-hander Joe Ross will have Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the season.
Dr. Keith Meister will operate on Wednesday in Texas, according to Washington manager Dusty Baker.
Ross left Sunday's start at Arizona with what was called triceps tenderness and had an MRI on Friday that confirmed the elbow damage. He was placed on the disabled list on Friday, a move retroactive to Tuesday.
Nationals put starter Joe Ross on DL with sore elbow
CINCINNATI (AP) — The Washington Nationals put right-hander Joe Ross on the 10-day disabled list with a sprained elbow on Friday and revamped their bullpen for a series against the Reds.
Ross went 2-1 with a 2.36 ERA in his last four starts before the injury. He's 5-3 overall with a 5.01 ERA in 13 starts.
The Nationals also called up relievers Austin Adams and Trevor Gott from Triple-A Syracuse. Left-hander Sammy Solis was optioned to Syracuse.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Nationals starting pitcher Joe Ross left Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves in the fourth inning with a possible injury.
After Ross got the first batter of the inning, Nick Markakis, to fly to left, pitching coach Mike Maddux came out to the mound and was soon joined by the team trainer. Manager Dusty Baker then came out and Ross was removed in favor of Matt Grace.
Taylor homers twice, Nats clobber Reds 18-3
WASHINGTON (AP) — With one of baseball's deepest and toughest lineups, the Washington Nationals showed why they lead the National League in hitting and scoring.
Michael Taylor homered twice among his four hits, Trea Turner finished 5 of 5 with a walk and the Nationals beat the Cincinnati Reds 18-3 on Saturday.
Daniel Murphy had four RBIs with his three-run double highlighting a six-run second inning. Taylor's two-run homer capped a four-run fourth inning and he added a solo shot in the sixth.
Ross fans 12, Drew homers as Nationals beat Orioles 6-1
WASHINGTON (AP) — In a duel between two exhausted teams, the Washington Nationals received a sparkling performance from their starting pitcher.
The Baltimore Orioles did not.
And so, predictably, Washington breezed to a 6-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night.
Joe Ross had a career-high 12 strikeouts in an unexpectedly sharp outing, and the Nationals took control with a four-run first inning against Alec Asher (2-4).
Healy powers Athletics past Nationals, 10-4
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — After already having one home run, Ryon Healy mentioned to Trevor Plouffe that he'd never hot two in a game at any level of pro ball.
"Plouffe goes, 'well today's a pretty good day to do so.'" Healy recalled his teammate saying before the slugger went deep again.
Healy had two doubles and two homers, Jed Lowrie doubled twice and homered, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Washington Nationals 10-4 on Saturday.
Schmipf, Padres break out the bats, beat Nationals 5-3
WASHINGTON (AP) — Bulldozed by Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg the previous two games, the San Diego Padres took extra batting practice — against Washington starter Joe Ross.
Ryan Schimpf hit a two-run homer and the Padres broke loose, beating the Nationals 5-3 Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep.
WASHINGTON (AP) — National League home run leader Bryce Harper is among four starters out of the lineup for the Washington Nationals in their series finale against the San Diego Padres on Sunday.
Daniel Murphy, Jayson Werth and Matt Wieters also did not start for the Nationals, who open a nine-game, 10-day road trip Monday afternoon in San Francisco.
Ross sharp in return, Nats explode in 10-1 win over Mariners
WASHINGTON (AP) — Joe Ross was at his best on Tuesday night, when even his worst might have done the job for the Washington Nationals.
Ross (2-0) allowed one run over a career high-tying eight innings in his return from the minors, Anthony Rendon homered twice and drove in five runs, and the Nationals completed a 10-1 rout over the Seattle Mariners.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Nationals have brought up pitcher Joe Ross from the minors to start against the Seattle Mariners.
The Nationals made the move to have Ross start Tuesday night.
Ross is 1-0 with a 7.47 ERA over three previous starts for Washington. He faces Seattle after allowing four earned runs over 13 innings in his last two outings at Triple-A Syracuse.
Nationals recall RHP Cole from Syracuse, option Ross
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Nationals optioned Joe Ross to Syracuse on Tuesday after the right-hander struggled in three straight starts.
Washington filled the roster spot by recalling righty A.J. Cole from the Triple-A team.
Ross gave up 15 runs and 20 hits in 15 2/3 innings since his recall from the minors on April 19. He yielded five runs and seven hits over four innings to the New York Mets on Sunday.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Right-handed starter Joe Ross was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse and right-hander Jeremy Guthrie was reassigned to minor league camp as the Washington Nationals finalized their opening-day roster.
Sunday's moves mean infielder Wilmer Difo and outfielder Michael A. Taylor made the roster.
The Nationals do not need a fifth starter right away, so by sending Ross to the minors they have a spot for an extra position player.
Nats’ Tanner Roark relishes roles as starting pitcher
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Qfter he took Nationals' job in November 2015, Washington manager Dusty Baker made a call to Tanner Roark and asked the pitcher his preferred role.
"He had won 14 or 15 the first year and was moved to the bullpen," Baker recalled. "He said, 'I want to start." I told him, 'Then you tell the world you want to start.'"
Ross throws 90 pitches in 4 innings; Nats top Arizona 5-3
WASHINGTON (AP) — Sure, the Washington Nationals would love to lock up home-field advantage in the NL Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. What Dusty Baker is more concerned about is getting ready for the playoffs, and that includes having pitcher Joe Ross ready to go, whether that's as a starter or reliever.
Diamondbacks beat Nationals in rain-shortened game
WASHINGTON (AP) — With Stephen Strasburg not expected to pitch in the National League Division Series and Joe Ross not yet fully stretched out after a two-month layoff, the Washington Nationals are counting on Gio Gonzalez to come through in the playoffs.
But in his final start of the regular season, Gonzalez struggled with his command and quickly built a high-pitch count in a 3-0 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks in a rain-shortened game Wednesday.
Joe Ross expected to come off DL, start Sunday for Nationals
ATLANTA (AP) — Washington Nationals manager Dusty Baker expects Joe Ross to return from the 60-day disabled list Sunday and make his first start since July 2.
Baker will keep Ross on a pitch count, probably no more than three innings, when Washington closes a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves.
Ross has been sidelined with right shoulder inflammation. He went 7-4 with a 3.49 ERA in 16 starts before getting hurt.
Nationals’ Latos leaves start with injury
WASHINGTON (AP) — Mat Latos was removed from his first start with the Washington Nationals on Monday when he appeared to injure his right leg with one out in the fifth inning.
The Nationals were leading the New York Mets 8-1 when Latos, 28, was examined on the mound by trainer Paul Lessard before leaving the game.
Latos signed a minor league deal with Washington in June after the Chicago White Sox released him. The right-hander was making his first big league start since June 7.
One inning costs Cole in Nationals’ 4-1 loss to Braves
WASHINGTON (AP) — With Stephen Strasburg joining Joe Ross as sidelined members of the Washington Nationals' starting rotation, the team's young prospects like A.J. Cole are filling the void.
Cole's latest effort was done in by one bad inning as he surrendered two third-inning homers in Washington's 4-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Nationals recalled pitcher Reynaldo Lopez to make his major league debut Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The team selected the right-hander's contract from Triple-A Syracuse and placed left-handed reliever Sammy Solis on the disabled list with right knee inflammation.
Lopez, who is the fifth-ranked prospect in the Nationals' organization and 92nd-ranked in baseball, had a 3.27 ERA in four starts for Syracuse after...
LEADING OFF: Peavy, Giants at Fenway, Lopez debuts for Nats
A look at what's happening all around the majors today:
Jake Peavy and the San Francisco Giants begin a two-game series at Fenway Park. Peavy started three postseason games for the Red Sox during their 2013 run to the World Series crown. Rick Porcello (11-2, 3.66 ERA) starts for Boston. Manager John Farrell said the team thought Porcello would benefit from a few extra days of rest out of the All-Star break.
