Benzinger helps Wright State hold off IUPUI 60-52
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Grant Benzinger scored 16 points, including five in a span of 40 seconds as Wright State turned back an IUPUI rally and won a second consecutive Horizon League game, 60-52 on Saturday.
Benzinger knocked down a 3 that gave the Raiders (10-5, 2-0) a 38-28 lead with 12:31 to play, but IUPUI chipped away with an 18-13 run over the next nine minutes and came as close as 48-46 when Evan Hall and Jaylen Minnett hit consecutive 3-pointers with 5:17 remaining.
Wright St opens Horizon League play with win over UIC
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Justin Mitchell totaled 14 points and six rebounds, Mark Hughes added 13 points and five assists and Grant Benzinger finished with a double-double to carry Wright State to a 65-61 victory over Illinois-Chicago on Thursday night in a Horizon League opener.
Benzinger tallied 11 points, 11 rebounds and four steals for the Raiders (9-5), who have won 9 of 11 after opening the season 0-3.
Missouri State holds off Wright State 66-50
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Obediah Church scored 13 points and blocked three shots, Alize Johnson added 12 points with 14 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season, and Missouri State held off a second-half Wright State run to win 66-50 on Tuesday night.
Mitchell’s double-double helps Wright St beat Toledo 77-69
TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Justin Mitchell scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the season and Wright State beat Toledo 77-69 on Saturday.
Grant Benzinger also scored 18 points, Loudon Love added 11 points and 12 rebounds and Mark Hughes chipped in 10 points. It was the third-straight win for the Raiders (7-4) after a 78-60 loss to Western Kentucky on Dec. 2.
Wright St. beats Kent St. 63-54 behind Benzinger, Mitchell
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Grant Benzinger scored 13 points and Justin Mitchell collected 11 rebounds and tied a career-high with five steals as Wright State defeated Kent State 63-54 on Saturday.
Parker Ernsthausen gave Wright State (6-4) the lead for good at 19-17 on a jumper with seven minutes left before halftime. Everett Winchester and Ernsthausen each added layups for a six-point lead. Jaylon Hall's jumper put the Raiders up 29-19 and they led 31-24 at the break.
Mitchell scores 21 points, Wright State holds on 57-56
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Justin Mitchell scored 21 points including a basket with 56 seconds left to lead Wright State to a 57-56 victory over Fairfield on Sunday, the final day of the Wright State Tournament.
The Raiders (4-3) won their fourth straight game and swept their three tournament opponents.
Wright State had a 14-point lead with 13 minutes left but was outscored 20-8 over the next 10 minutes with Jesus Cruz scoring eight points and Ferron Flavors Jr. six.
Wright St. grabs early lead and beats Jacksonville 68-44
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Grant Benzinger scored 16 points and Mark Hughes added 14 points and Wright State beat Jacksonville 68-44 on Saturday on the second day of the Wright State Tournament.
Justin Mitchell added 13 points and Jaylon Hall totaled 11 for Wright State (3-3) which now owns a three-game winning streak. The loss ends Jacksonville's two-game win streak.
Wright State overpowers Tiffin in 73-49 win
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Everett Winchester scored 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting and Justin Mitchell added 15 points to lead Wright State to its first win of the season with a 73-49 victory over Division II Tiffin on Monday night.
Wright State (1-3) trailed just briefly early in the first half and took a 40-22 advantage into the break, then had to repel a Tiffin surge in the second half that twice cut the deficit back to single digits.
Loyola-Chicago holds off Wright State 84-80
CHICAGO (AP) — Bruno Skokna made a key steal with 10 seconds left and Marques Townes secured it with 1 of 2 free throws as Loyola-Chicago beat Wright State 84-80 in the season opener for both teams on Friday night.
The Ramblers led for the entire second half but never pulled away and Wright State was able to close within two on Mark Hughes' 3-pointer with 26 seconds left.
