HIROSHIMA, Japan (AP) — Third-seeded Alison Van Uytvanck advanced to the quarterfinals of the Japan Women's Open with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Kirsten Flipkens on Thursday.
NANCHANG, China (AP) — Former Russia Fed Cup player Margarita Gasparyan earned her first WTA main-draw win in more than two years at the Jiangxi Open on Monday.
Gasparyan beat former qualifier and former junior world No. 1 Shilin Xu 6-1, 6-4.
Gasparyan won WTA singles (1) and doubles (2) titles in 2015 and played for Russia in 2016 then fell off the main tour because of injuries.
Fed Cup: Japan wins decisive doubles to beat Britain 3-2
MIKI, Japan (AP) — Miyu Kato and Makoto Ninomiya beat Johanna Konta and Heather Watson 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in doubles on Sunday to give Japan a 3-2 win over Britain in their Fed Cup World Group playoff.
Konta beat Naomi Osaka 6-3, 6-3 in the first reverse singles to give Britain a 2-1 lead after the two countries split the opening singles matches on Saturday.
Fed Cup: Japan and Britain 1-1 after opening day
MIKI, Japan (AP) — Johanna Konta has leveled Britain's Fed Cup World Group playoff against Japan with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Kurumi Nara on Saturday.
After taking a 3-0 lead in the second set, Konta broke Nara to lead 5-2 and then served for the win to level the playoff at 1-1.
Naomi Osaka, who claimed her first WTA title at Indian Wells in March, hit 11 aces to beat Heather Watson 6-2, 6-3 in the opening singles.
Kerber ousts local favorite Osaka at Pan-Pacific Open
TOKYO (AP) — Seventh-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany got a measure of revenge for a U.S. Open loss by beating Naomi Osaka 6-3, 6-4 on Monday to advance to the second round of the Pan-Pacific Open.
Last month, Kerber was knocked out of the U.S. Open by the Japanese teenager in straight sets.
Japan’s Nara upsets 2004 champion Kuznetsova at US Open
NEW YORK (AP) — Japan's Kurumi Nara eliminated 2004 U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 on Thursday night to reach the third round at Flushing Meadows for the first time since 2013.
It was the first victory in nine matches against opponents ranked in the top 10 for Nara, who is No. 116.
"Biggest win of my career," she called it.
Nara has never been past the third round at any Grand Slam tournament.
Rain delays Serena Williams 1st-round match in Auckland
AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — Serena Williams will have to wait a little longer for her first match of 2017 after rain curtailed play Monday on the opening day of the ASB Classic.
Williams was due to play in evening session against unseeded Pauline Parmentier of France but steady rain made play impossible at the open-air stadium and the first-round match was postponed to Tuesday.
Venus Williams, a former champion in Auckland, is due to play New Zealand wildcard entry Jade Lewis on Tuesday.
Monica Puig advances to 2nd round at Tianjin Open
TIANJIN, China (AP) — Olympic gold medalist Monica Puig advanced to the second round of the Tianjin Open by beating Kurumi Nara of Japan 6-3, 7-6 (5) Tuesday.
The fifth-seeded Puig has struggled with consistency since her triumph at the Rio de Janeiro Games, losing in the opening round at the U.S. Open and in her last two tournaments in China.
Nara upsets third-seeded Putintseva to advance at Japan Open
TOKYO (AP) — Local favorite Kurumi Nara upset third-seeded Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Japan Open.
Nara secured the win when she broke Putintseva's serve in the final game of the second set and will next face Jana Cepelova of Slovakia.
In other matches, sixth-seeded Shuai Zhang of China overpowered Naomi Osaka of Japan 6-3, 6-2 to book her spot in the last eight.
Zhang Shuai advances to 2nd round at Japan Open
TOKYO (AP) — Sixth-seeded Zhang Shuai of China advanced to the second round of the Japan Open by beating Eri Hozumi 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-3 Monday.
Hozumi, a wild-card entry from Japan, broke in the fifth and seventh games to lead 5-2 in the first set but Zhang fought back with two breaks to push the set to a tiebreak.
