Tom Oates: Cutdown day reveals some potential problem areas on Packers’ roster
Welcome to NFL cutdown day or, as we now call it, the one day a year when Ted Thompson steps out of character and rolls the dice.
A year after taking the risky step of cutting Pro Bowl guard Josh Sitton in the final roster reduction, the Green Bay Packers’ normally cautious general manager was at it again Saturday. This time he gambled by parting with a good portion of his promising young talent at quarterback and wide receiver.

Packers ask NFL to review hits by Eagles that hurt 2 players
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The Packers have submitted videos to the NFL of hits by Eagles players that knocked out Green Bay's Malachi Dupre and Damarious Randall on separate plays.
Coach Mike McCarthy said Friday he expected the league to evaluate the hits from Thursday's preseason game from the perspective of player safety. When asked to clarify, McCarthy said, "If I turned them into the league, I don't think they're legal hits."
Receivers Malachi Dupre of LSU and Travis Rudolph of Florida State are prime examples of pro prospects who left high school as five-star recruits and now enter the NFL draft trying to overcome perceptions that they never fulfilled their promise in college.
For NFL teams, the challenge is figuring out why such players haven't met expectations — and whether they might still flourish as pros.
