Panthers DT Kawann Short will play vs. Saints
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Panthers defensive tackle Kawaan Short is active and will play against the Saints on Monday night despite being listed as doubtful with a calf injury.
Short was upgraded to questionable on Sunday after making progress in his rehab.
Carolina kicker Graham Gano will miss his second straight game with a knee injury, meaning Chandler Catanzaro will again handle kicking duties.
Saints, Chargers praise each other for lively joint practice
COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — The New Orleans Saints took a four-hour flight into Southern California late Tuesday night, and they hit the Los Angeles Chargers' training camp fields early Wednesday.
Instead of being bothered by the tough turnaround, the Saints used the circumstances to sharpen their focus for the upcoming season.
The Saints have promoted Adam Bighill from the practice squad.
The linebacker has been active for games against Minnesota and Detroit this season. He contributed mostly on special teams in both games.
To make room for Bighill, New Orleans waived veteran offensive lineman Bryce Harris, who has bounced on and off the roster all season.

Saints’ Te’o reconnects with Chargers pals in joint practice
COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — Manti Te'o has been surrounded by friends while his New Orleans Saints held two joint practices this week with the Chargers, his team for the previous four seasons.
"I've got over 200 teammates out there," the linebacker said Friday after the second workout at the Chargers' training camp complex.
METAIRIE, La. (AP) — When linebacker A.J. Klein joined the Saints this offseason, he wasn't keenly aware of the problems New Orleans had on defense during the past few seasons and remains uninterested in revisiting it.
"I really didn't look into numbers. I didn't look into what's happened in the past," Klein said after a minicamp practice on Wednesday. "Right now I'm focused on the future, focused on building on what we have."
METAIRIE, La. (AP) — NFL veteran linebacker Manti Te'o has agreed to sign a two-year contract with the New Orleans Saints, according to a person familiar with the situation.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday on condition of anonymity because the agreement has not been announced.
New Orleans also is bringing back free-agent cornerback Sterling Moore. Moore's agent, Andy Simms, said Moore has agreed to a one-year deal.
Chargers NT Mebane out for season with torn biceps
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Chargers nose tackle Brandon Mebane will miss the rest of the season with a torn biceps.
Mebane was hurt in Sunday's 31-24 home loss to the Miami Dolphins, which dropped San Diego to 4-6.
He joins a growing list of Chargers lost for the season, including wide receivers Keenan Allen and Stevie Johnson, running back Danny Woodhead, linebacker Manti Te'o and cornerback Jason Verrett.
Mebane signed as a free agent in the offseason after spending the previous nine years with Seattle.
Chargers CB Verrett out for season with torn ACL
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Chargers have lost cornerback Jason Verrett to a season-ending knee injury even as it appears that rookie defensive end Joey Bosa is finally ready to make his NFL debut.
Verrett confirmed Wednesday that he has a torn ACL in his left knee that will require surgery.
"My season is done with," he said.
Verrett, who was a Pro Bowler last year in his second NFL season, said he felt pain the past three games and had an MRI on Monday that revealed the injury.
Quick hits five days before the Chargers open the 2016 season:
1) Chargers rookie Jatavis Brown made the most of one exhibition game.
2) Only a watered-down scrimmage but Brown's work matched up with his college film and flashes from early in training camp.
He's advanced at football geometry: gets from point A to point B in the shortest distance. This speaks to vision, awareness, agility and toughness.
The Chargers will report to training camp July 29 and begin practice July 30. In the U-T's breakdown of positional units, today's group is the inside linebackers.
Six on the roster: Denzel Perryman, Manti Te'o, Nick Dzubnar, Jatavis Brown, Josh Perry, James Ross.
Difference maker: As a rookie last year, Perryman supplanted veteran Donald Butler midway through the season and provided explosive playmaking the Chargers have sorely lacked at inside linebacker for...
