Standoff with police leaves man dead
MARTINS FERRY, Ohio (AP) — A man that authorities say was chasing family members with a knife has been killed after a standoff with law enforcement officers in eastern Ohio.
Belmont County Sheriff David Lucas says police and sheriff's deputies were called to a home near Martins Ferry around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Officers on arrival were told by the man's brother that his mother was inside the home in a locked room. Officers brought the woman out safely and went inside the home after a fire was set.

Democrats set first Ohio governor race debate Sept. 12
CINCINNATI (AP) — Ohio Democrats plan to kick off a series of debates for their party's 2018 governor nomination next month in eastern Ohio, their state chairman said Monday.
The four current candidates will meet Sept. 12 at Martins Ferry High School in a region where Republican Donald Trump ran strongly in the 2016 presidential race.
Pepper said they hope to debate in all of the state's regions, with possibly three debates this year and three more next year.
