CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Onno Steger scored 25 points and Matt Halvorsen added 24 points as Western Carolina beat the Citadel 103-82 on Saturday, snapping a four-game skid.
Steger and Halvorsen were both 6 of 9 from beyond the 3-point arc for the Catamounts (7-21, 4-11 Southern Conference), who hit 19 of 30 3-pointers overall, a season-high. Marc Gosselin had 18 points and six rebounds and Marcus Thomas had 13 points and six rebounds.
Magee scores 30, lifts Wofford over Western Carolina 83-56
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — Fletcher Magee had 30 points as Wofford extended its win streak to 12 games, rolling past Western Carolina 83-56 on Saturday night.
Magee hit 8 of 11 3-pointers.
Cameron Jackson had 15 points, nine rebounds, five steals and three blocks for Wofford (21-4, 13-0 Southern Conference). Keve Aluma added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Nathan Hoover had 10 points for the home team.
Good is nothing but leading ETSU past W Carolina 91-69
CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Patrick Good scored a career-high 35 points, shooting 11 of 17 from beyond the 3-point arc, and East Tennessee State routed Western Carolina 91-69 on Saturday night.
Good became the 16th player in ETSU's 100-year history to score at least 35 points. His 11th 3-pointer broke Courtney Pigram's record of 10 which he set on Feb. 28, 2009. Good's previous career high was 21 which he reached twice.
Parham’s 33 pts leads VMI past W Carolina 91-83
LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) — Bubba Parham scored 33 points, Sarju Patel added 17 and VMI beat Western Carolina 91-83 on Saturday for its first Southern Conference win while ending a five-game losing streak.
Gibson, Halvorsen pace W. Carolina past The Citadel 94-82
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Kameron Gibson and Matt Halvorsen each scored 16 points, Carlos Dotson grabbed 14 rebounds and Western Carolina beat The Citadel 94-82 on Saturday.
The Catamounts (5-14, 2-4 Southern Conference) built a 27-10 lead in the first 10 minutes and never trailed. Halvorsen wrapped up scoring at the end of the half with three foul shots after getting fouled on a 3-point attempt for a 47-35 lead.
Cummings scores 36, lifts Mercer over Western Carolina 84-80
MACON, Ga. (AP) — Ross Cummings had a career-high 36 points as Mercer slipped past Western Carolina 84-80 on Thursday night.
Cummings hit 12 of 19 shots, including 7 of 11 from 3-point range, as the Bears (6-10, 1-3 Southern Conference) shot 56 percent from the floor and 45 percent from beyond the arc. Ethan Stair had 14 points and Jaylen Stowe added 12 points and seven rebounds.
Steger with 23 leads Western Carolina past Samford 76-69
CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Onno Steger scored 23 points and Western Carolina picked up its first conference win, beating Samford 76-69 on Saturday.
Steger was 9 of 14 from the field including five from distance for the Catamounts (4-13, 1-3 Southern Conference). Kameron Gibson added 20 points and five assists, Carlos Dotson had 13 points and 13 rebounds and Matt Halvorsen had 10 points.
Chattanooga continues 3-ball assault in downing W Carolina
CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Kevin Easley scored 21 points making all five of his 3-point shot attempts and David Jean-Baptiste added 13 to lead Chattanooga past Western Carolina 73-62 Thursday night.
Ramon Vila scored 10 points with seven rebounds and the Mocs (7-9, 2-1 Southern Conference) finished 24-of-47 (51.1 percent) shooting and made half their 22 3-point shot attempts. It was the seventh time this season they've made 11 or more from long range.
Gibson leads Western Carolina past Jacksonville 77-65
CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Kameron Gibson scored 19 points with a trio of 3-pointers to lead five players into double-figure scoring and Western Carolina defeated Jacksonville 77-65 on Saturday.
Matt Halvorsen and Carlos Dotson scored 13 each, Marcus Thomas 11 and Onno Steger 10 for Western Carolina, which ended a two-game slide.
The Catamounts (2-5) shot 53 percent from the floor (29-for-55) while Jacksonville was at 37 percent (22-59). Western Carolina also hit nine 3-pointers to 3 for Jacksonville.
Western Carolina beats NCCAA’s Hiwassee College 95-55
CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Matt Halvorsen scored 26 points, leading five players in double-figure scoring and Western Carolina picked up its first win of the season, beating Hiwassee College 94-55 on Saturday.
Halvorsen was 7 of 13 from the field including four from distance for the Catamounts (1-3). Marcus Thomas added 17 points and eight rebounds, Josh Cottrell had 12 points, Onno Steger had 11 points and five rebounds and Carlos Dotson led with 10 rebounds in addition to his 10 points.
Brantley blocks shot at buzzer, Charleston tops WCU 77-74
CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Grant Riller scored 28 points, Jarrell Brantley had 14 points, nine rebounds and a blocked shot on the final play, and Charleston beat Western Carolina 77-74 on Saturday in the Catamounts' home opener.
After a timeout with 10 seconds left, WCU inbounded it, swung it around the 3-point arc and Matt Halvorsen's 3-point attempt from the wing was blocked.
Charleston (2-0) was down by nine points with 10 minutes to go.
Wampler, Love pace Wright State to 96-73 win in opener
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Bill Wampler scored 26 points and Loudon Love 17 as Wright State opened the basketball season with a wire-to-wire 96-73 win over Western Carolina Wednesday night.
Furman hits 15 3s in 100-66 rout of W Carolina
GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Devin Sibley scored 23 points, John Davis III added 18 with four 3-pointers, and Furman scored a season-high 58 first-half points in its 100-66 blowout of Western Carolina on Saturday to take control of fourth place in Southern Conference play.
Matt Rafferty scored 13 points, Daniel Fowler added 10, and the Paladins (15-7, 6-3) made 15 3-pointers and shot 51.6 percent from the floor to the Catamounts' 34.5 percent.
Samford dominates W. Carolina 85-71 in Southern Conf. play
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Demetirus Denzel-Dyson scored 21 points and Triston Chambers nailed five from long range for 15 as Samford dominated Western Carolina 85-71 in Southern Conference action on Saturday night.
Denzel-Dyson drilled 4 of 7 from beyond the arc. Chambers missed just two field goal attempts, hitting 5 of 7 from distance. Alex Thompson and Eric Adams added 13 points apiece for Samford (6-10, 2-1).
Fox, Proctor lead High Point over Western Carolina 72-61
CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Andre Fox and Jahaad Proctor scored 16 points apiece and High Point defeated Western Carolina 72-61 on Tuesday night.
Fox added eight rebounds and Proctor tagged on six rebounds and four assists for the Panthers (5-6). Brandonn Kamga scored 13 and Jordan Whitehead chipped in 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting.
Amius, Parks lead Western Carolina past App State, 72-71
CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Mike Amius had 19 points, including the go-ahead dunk with 7.4 seconds left and Deriece Parks scored a career-high 20 points to help Western Carolina beat Appalachian State 72-71 on Monday night.
Amius was 8-of-13 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds, while Parks hit a career-best six 3-pointers on eight attempts. Matt Halvorsen scored 14, going 8 of 8 from the free-throw line.
Jordan Murphy leads Minnesota past Western Carolina
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Even with two of his teammates on the bench in foul trouble, Jordan Murphy knew he didn't have to take the game over in the second half. He did it anyway.
Murphy had 23 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 14 Minnesota cruised past Western Carolina 92-64 on Sunday.
Western Carolina gets first victory, 76-57 over Hiwassee
CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Devin Peterson scored 15 points with six rebounds, six assists and four steals and Western Carolina picked up its first victory of the season, winning its home opener against Hiwassee 76-57 on Wednesday night.
