Simon Yates protects lead, poised to win Spanish Vuelta
SANTUARIO DE CANOLICH, Andorra (AP) — English rider Simon Yates is poised to win his first Grand Tour title after he successfully defended his lead in the Spanish Vuelta through Saturday's 20th stage.
Yates will take his advantage of 1 minute, 46 seconds, over Enric Mas into the final stage, when race custom dictates the riders don't attack the race leaders on the traditional arrival to Madrid.
"I've made it! It's still sinking in," said Yates, who rides for Mitchelton-Scott.
Pinot dominates Covadonga climb to win Vuelta’s 15th stage
LAGOS DE COVADONGA, Spain (AP) — Thibaut Pinot won the challenging 15th stage of the Spanish Vuelta with a dominant charge on the iconic climb into Lagos de Covadonga on Sunday, while Simon Yates stayed close and added a few seconds to his overall lead.
Pinot broke away under dense fog with about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) to go and the Groupama-FDJ rider held on for an impressive victory after a 178.2-kilometer (110.7-mile) ride through the Picos de Europa mountains in northern Spain.

NAVA, Spain (AP) — Simon Yates recovered the lead of the Spanish Vuelta after pulling away from his title rivals on the final uphill push to win the mountainous 14th stage on Saturday.
Yates withstood repeated attacks from the small group of seven riders first up the first-category Les Praeres summit before the English cyclist opened up a small gap on the final 300 meters of the grueling ascent.
SAPPADA, Italy (AP) — Simon Yates made it a hat trick of wins in the Giro d'Italia on the 15th stage Sunday and the British rider consolidated his overall lead as the race heads into its final week.
After unsuccessfully attempting a similar move just moments earlier, Yates set off on a solo attack with 17 kilometers (10.5 miles) remaining. He looked back after a few meters and continued to accelerate.
Miguel Angel Lopez wins 15th Vuelta stage, Froome keeps lead
ALTO HOYA DE LA MORA, Spain (AP) — Colombian rider Miguel Angel Lopez won the mountainous 15th stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Sunday, while Tour de France winner Chris Froome tacked a few seconds onto his overall lead.
A late surge by Froome over the final meters of the punishing ride over two category one and a final special-category ascent allowed him to grow the gap over Vincenzo Nibali.
Majka wins 14th stage of Vuelta, Froome keeps lead
SIERRA DE LA PANDERA, Spain (AP) — Polish rider Rafal Majka won the mountainous 14th stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Saturday, while Chris Froome maintained his overall lead.
Majka, who was third overall in the 2015 edition of this race, won on a solo breakaway up the final special-category ascent. The BORA-hansgrohe rider finished the 175-kilometer (108.7-mile) stage from Ecija to Sierra de La Pandera in 4 hours, 42 minutes, 10 seconds.
Froome extends Vuelta lead, Lopez wins Stage 11
CALAR ALTO, Spain (AP) — Chris Froome increased his lead of the Spanish Vuelta on Wednesday, finishing second in the mountainous 11th stage behind Astana rider Miguel Angel Lopez.
The 23-year-old Lopez won his first grand stage tour, with the Colombian finishing the 187.5-kilometer (116.5-mile) ride from Lorca to the Calar Alto summit in 5 hours, 5 minutes, 9 seconds. Froome was second, 14 seconds back, edging title rival Vincenzo Nibali.
Froome now leads second-placed Nibali by 1:19 overall.
