Czech film fest to honor Tim Robbins, Barry Levinson
PRAGUE (AP) — An annual international film festival in the western Czech spa town of Karlovy Vary is kicking off with an award for American actor, director, and producer Tim Robbins.
Robbins won an Oscar in 2004 for best supporting actor in "Mystic River" and was nominated for a best director for his 1995 movie "Dead Man Walking." Friday's opening night at the 53rd edition of the festival is honoring his outstanding contributions to world cinema.
Milos Forman, Oscar-winning director, dies at 86
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Czech filmmaker Milos Forman, whose American movies "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "Amadeus" won a deluge of Academy Awards, including best director Oscars, died Saturday. He was 86.
Forman died about 2 a.m. Saturday at Danbury Hospital, near his home in Warren, Connecticut, according to a statement released by the former director's agent, Dennis Aspland. Aspland said Forman's wife, Martina, notified him of the death.
Andrew Lloyd Webber is ready to write his own story
NEW YORK (AP) — The composer behind such iconic stage stories as "The Phantom of the Opera," ''Evita" and "Cats" is ready to tell his own.
Andrew Lloyd Webber plans to release his autobiography "Unmasked" on March 6, which loosely coincides with his 70th birthday on March 22. While there have been plenty of books about the composer, this will be the first he's written.
STAMFORD — The Avon Theatre, the independent film center in downtown Stamford, has removed Harvey Weinstein from their film advisory board, the theatre confirmed Thursday.
The theatre declined to comment or release a statement with further explanation.
US-based actor Jan Triska dies after fall from Prague bridge
PRAGUE (AP) — Jan Triska, an actor who moved to the U.S. after being banned by the Czechoslovak Communist regime, has died, more than a day after he fell from Prague's iconic Charles Bridge. He was 80.
Prague theater director Jan Hrusinsky confirmed the death Monday. Triska died in Prague's military hospital overnight due to injuries from Saturday's fall, the circumstances of which are unclear.
