Hip-hop has long dominated culture — what took so long for it to dominate the Grammys?
Once considered a passing fad, hip-hop has permeated American pop music and become the most influential sound in the genre over the last half century. Its artists have gone from being persecuted over lyrics to bona-fide pop stars, corporate pitchmen, Hollywood players, tech moguls and label executives.
And now, after being largely overlooked in major categories for nearly four decades, this latest crop of Grammy nominations finally reflect the genre's continued prominence.
Gonzaga University Hip-Hop and Rap Club brings Seattle rapper Travis Thompson to campus
Growing up in Los Angeles, Gabriel Rivas listened to hip-hop and rap every chance he got.
In the car, he listened to 93.5 KDAY, a classic hip-hop station, and when he got his own computer, he listened to artists like Jay Z, Nas, Biggie, Tupac, Ghostface Killah and the Wu-Tang Clan.
He dove deep into their discographies and studied how the genre has evolved over the years, moving from Jay Z and Nas to artists like Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole and Kanye West.
Jay-Z is a strange entity in the hip-hop game.
In a musical genre that, historically, favors the flavor of the moment, he's managed to maintain his relevance for more than two decades, making music and business decisions that keep him in the graces of hardcore hip-hop fans and music critics who tend to dismiss many of his peers.
