LAS VEGAS (AP) — Teachers in Nevada's largest school district are trying to find ways to deal with overcrowded classrooms after a study by the National Education Association found that the state had the largest average class sizes in the nation last year for the second year in a row.
National study shows Wyoming teachers are well paid
CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — A report by the National Education Association ranks Wyoming 16th in the nation in paying its teachers.
Wyoming teachers are paid an average of $58,187 a year. Only 14 states and the District of Columbia pay their teachers more.
The report also says that Wyoming has the fifth lowest student-to-instructor ratios in the United States with about 12 students per teacher in the classroom.
The report comes as teachers in several other states have gone on strike to protest low pay.
North Carolina ranks 37th in the nation for average teacher pay, according to estimates released Monday by the National Education Association.

The National Education Association released figures Monday with North Carolina ranked 39th in average teacher pay during the 2016-17 school year at just under $50,000. The state was 41st the previous year. On per-pupil spending, North Carolina was 39th compared to 42nd the year before.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The process of laying off teachers in what's known as "pink slip season" — May 15 to the last day of school — attracts most of the attention when education loyalists argue for funding.
But there's another category known as "displaced" or involuntarily transferred teachers that also stems from budget cuts. It involves keeping a teacher in the district but putting him or her up for bid to a different school.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — The head of the New Hampshire chapter of the National Education Association says that arming teachers is an abominable idea.
Megan Tuttle says educators didn't enter the profession to carry guns to their workplace.
Tuttle said that NEA-NH, the state's largest educators' and education employee union, is convening a coalition of other education associations, first responders, parent groups, and mental health professionals to offer answers to school gun violence.
Filer teacher makes National Education Association list
FILER, Idaho (AP) — A Filer teacher is in the national spotlight.
The Times-News reports (http://bit.ly/2xQxp6V ) an eighth-grade English teacher at Filer Middle School, Sara Holley, was named last month to the National Education Association's "30 under 30" list.
It recognizes 30 teachers from across the country who are younger than 30.
Educators to gather in Boston for annual meeting
BOSTON (AP) — More than 7,500 educators from around the country will gather in Boston to address major issues facing schools, students and education during the National Education Association's annual meeting and Representative Assembly.
The meeting is set to begin Sunday and will run through July 5 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center.
North Carolina ranks 35th in the nation for average teacher pay, an improvement from last year, when the state ranked 41st, according to estimates released Wednesday by the National Education Association.
McGilvray, union president and state senator, dies at 51
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Scott McGilvray, the president of the National Education Association teachers union in New Hampshire and a state senator, has died after suffering an illness. He was 51.
A spokesman for the NEA says McGilvray died Tuesday night at a Boston hospital. He had taken a leave of absence from work in February due to illness.
