National League East capsules
Capsules of National League East teams, listed in order of finish last year:
Nick Markakis stays with Braves for $6 million deal
ATLANTA (AP) — All-Star outfielder Nick Markakis took a significant pay cut to remain with the Atlanta Braves, even coming off one of the best seasons of his career.
Markakis and the Braves agreed Tuesday to a deal that is worth a guaranteed $6 million and includes a club option for 2020.
The 35-year-old Markakis became a free agent after completing a $44 million, four-year deal that he signed with the Braves for the 2015 season when he left the Baltimore Orioles.
Red Sox get 3 Gold Glove winners
Mookie Betts and the Boston Red Sox just keep winning.
Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Ian Kinsler won Gold Gloves for the World Series champion Red Sox on Sunday night, and the Atlanta Braves also were recognized for their fielding excellence this season.
The 26-year-old Betts won for the third straight year. He also is a top contender for the AL MVP award.
Braves decline to make qualifying offers, including Markakis
ATLANTA (AP) — The Braves did not extend a qualifying offer to any of their free agents, including cleanup hitter Nick Markakis.
If Atlanta had made $17.9 million, one-year offer to Markakis by Friday's deadline, it would have been in line to receive a draft pick if he signed elsewhere. But the team opted against such a move, not wanting to give the outfielder — who turns 35 this month — the option of taking such a lucrative deal.
Baby Braves blanked in Atlanta’s 1st playoff game since 2013
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rather than pop, Ronald Acuna Jr. started the game with a popup. The big-hitting rookie never got into the swing at Dodger Stadium, and neither did the rest of the Atlanta Braves.
Hoping to break loose in their first postseason appearance since 2013, the Braves instead were blanked on six singles Thursday night, losing 6-0 to the Los Angeles Dodgers to begin the NL Division Series.

NL East champ Braves drop finale, wait for NL West champ
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Freddie Freeman, Nick Markakis and the NL East champion Atlanta Braves are set to open the playoffs on the road.
All they need is an NL West champion to play.
Needing at least a win to have a shot at home field in the NLDS, the Braves lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 on Sunday.
The Braves needed a win and a loss by both Colorado and Los Angeles to secure home-field advantage when the division series starts Thursday.
Gausman, Inciarte power Braves past Brewers
ATLANTA (AP) — Kevin Gausman loves pitching in a pennant race.
The games have meaning, and the fans are engaged. That was hardly the case before the Atlanta Braves acquired him from Baltimore.
"As a player to come into it, it's exciting," Gausman said. "I could tell from the first day I got here that these guys are the real deal. They want to win, not just now but in the future."
WASHINGTON (AP) — Gio Gonzalez pitched seven strong innings and earned his first victory since May 28 to help the Washington Nationals defeat the Atlanta Braves 6-3 Thursday to secure a four-game split.
The Nationals moved within 5 1/2 games of idle Philadelphia in the National League East. The Braves fell a game behind the Phillies.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Not too many teams locked in a pennant race get excited about a doubleheader split.
That wasn't the case with the Atlanta Braves, who were absolutely delighted after Ender Inciarte snapped a ninth-inning tie with a two-run triple in a 3-1 victory over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night.
The thing is, the Braves had already lost the opener 8-3 and were going up against three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer in the latter half of the day-night doubleheader.
Markakis homers in 10th, Braves rally to beat Mets 5-4
NEW YORK (AP) — Sure, Julio Teheran had perfected his home run celebration. Plenty of times, clowning with Atlanta pitchers during batting practice.
He just never got to trot it out.
Teheran hit his first big league homer to begin Atlanta's comeback, and Nick Markakis homered in the 10th inning to send the Braves over the New York Mets 5-4 Sunday.
ATLANTA (AP) — Nick Markakis kept saying he'd rather have a four-day break with his family than be named an All-Star.
Actually receiving his first All-Star selection changed all that. Suddenly he realized he'll relish the time with his wife and three sons at a setting where he'll be recognized as one of the game's biggest stars.
A look at what's happening around the majors today:
NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton gave New York a scare with an awkward fall in right field. An inning later, he showed everyone in the Bronx that he was just fine.
Stanton, Aaron Hicks and Kyle Higashioka each homered and New York went ahead early and hung on to beat the Atlanta Braves 8-5 on Tuesday night.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Max Fried was so good that he didn't even need all the support Nick Markakis and the Braves provided for his first win of the season.
Markakis hit a grand slam, Fried took a shutout into the seventh inning and Atlanta beat the St. Louis Cardinals 11-4 on Saturday night.
