Crew mistakenly fells tree planted for 1976 bicentennial
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Evansville officials say a tree-cutting crew mistakenly felled an oak tree planted for the nation's bicentennial.
The 42-year-old tree was recently cut down by a contractor in Evansville's downtown across from the Old National Events Plaza, leaving behind a plaque stating that it was planted in December 1976 in honor of the nation's 200th birthday.
Groups try to save historic tree from removal
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Environmentalists and residents are trying to stop developers from cutting down an estimated 300-year-old tree in Pennsylvania.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports technology firm Susquehanna International Group (SIG) is proposing cutting down the oak tree in Lower Merion Township as part of its plans for a new office building.

Now it's been auctioned, as a guitar, not some sorry slab of wood, in Naperville.
The piece in question is the DeMont Verb, a handmade guitar fashioned by Nate DeMont and his employees at DeMont Guitars in Oswego, using wood from the historic Hobson Oak tree.

Oak-killing fungus spreads to more places in New York
SOUTH BRISTOL, N.Y. (AP) — A devastating fungus that kills oak trees has been found in an eighth location in New York state.
The Department of Environmental Conservation says oak wilt has been found in the Ontario County town of South Bristol. It's the second location the disease has been found in Ontario County. There was a 2016 outbreak in Canandaigua, a few miles north of the new site.
Big oak tree branch narrowly misses mom, boy in parking lot
APOPKA, Fla. (AP) — Crews are removing a large oak tree branch that fell in a Florida shopping center's parking lot, narrowly missing a woman who was putting her 4-year-old child in his car seat.
The branch fell across three parked cars on Sunday afternoon at the Wekiva Riverwalk in Apopka, which is near Orlando.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (AP) — A towering oak tree has been cut down in western Illinois after a huge branch fell and killed two men watching a fireworks show.
Sixty-one-year-old Daniel Mendoza Sr. of Rock Island and 72-year-old Lawrence Anderson of Moline were killed July 3 outside the county courthouse in Rock Island.
Rock Island County Sheriff Gerry Bustos gave part of the tree to family members Saturday. He says the tree was considered dangerous after the deaths and needed to come down.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — A forester in Pennsylvania says he's discovered a massive red oak tree that may be one of the state's biggest trees.
Pennsylvania Forest Management's Tom McQuaide is in the process of submitting the tree's measurements for inclusion in the Champion Trees of Pennsylvania, a registry of the state's largest trees.
McQuaide says the red oak has a circumference of about 26 feet (8 meters) and a height of about 120 feet (37 meters). Officials say the tree could be 400 years old.

LONDON (AP) — Residents in London are being told to beware the white-haired caterpillars that can cause rashes, vomiting and asthma attacks.
The British Forestry Commission says caterpillars that become oak processionary moths have been spotted in and around the British capital since mid-April.
The caterpillars are covered in thousands of hairs containing the protein thaumetopoein, which can cause skin rashes, sore throats, breathing difficulties and eye problems.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — State entomologists say it's time for Maine property owners to remove a species of invasive caterpillar from trees where they can be reached.
The state has worked to control the spread of browntail moth caterpillars, which cause a rash that resembles poison ivy. The caterpillars spend winter webbed in leaves on oak and apple trees.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says oak wilt has been found in a suburban neighborhood and the Sanders nature preserve in the town of Glenville. The disease made its first appearance in New York in 2008 in another Glenville neighborhood, prompting removal of about 100 trees to prevent its spread.

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn University is once again replacing its landmark oak trees at Toomer's Corner.
A university statement says workers will plant new trees on Saturday because of damage caused by a fire in September.
The current trees were planted there after a University of Alabama fan poisoned the original Toomer's oaks.
