New trial ordered for woman convicted of killing daughter
OSKALOOSA, Iowa (AP) — A judge has ordered a new trial for a woman found guilty more than four years ago of killing her daughter in south-central Iowa's Mahaska County.
Court records say Judge Daniel Wilson last week set aside the first-degree murder conviction of 25-year-old Alicia Ritenour, agreeing with her arguments that her trial attorney had been ineffective. The judge did not release her from state custody and set bail at $500,000. The new trial has not yet been scheduled.

Michael Sytsma (SIHTZ'-muh), of Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, says Caleb Hammond died Monday. He declined to say where.
Caleb's stepmother, Kaylee Hammond, posted a photo of the boy on her Facebook page and said in a post Saturday that he had taken a turn for the worse Friday.

Man dies after boat overturns in Des Moines River
EDDYVILLE, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a man died after a boat capsized on the Des Moines River in southern Iowa.
Rescuers were sent to a spot on the southern end of Mahaska County around 7 p.m. Sunday to check a report about a capsized boat and people in the water. The Mahaska County Sheriff's Office says 46-year-old Martin Almond was found unconscious in the river and that he was declared dead later at a hospital. He lived in Oskaloosa.

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (AP) — Police in southeastern Iowa have announced an arrest in the stabbing death of a college basketball player in Oskaloosa.
Officials said Wednesday at a news conference that 23-year-old Luke Ryan VanHemert, of Oskaloosa, has been arrested in the May 1 fatal stabbing of 22-year-old Marquis Todd. Police say VanHemert was arrested Wednesday at his place of work in nearby Pella.

Authorities ID pilot who died in southern Iowa crash
OSKALOOSA, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have released the name of a pilot whose body was found in the wreckage of his small plane in south-central Iowa.
The Mahaska County Sheriff's Office identified him as 70-year-old Bruce Devick, who lived in Marshalltown.
Authorities say the single-engine aircraft crashed Saturday afternoon after striking a power line about 3 miles (5 kilometers) north of Oskaloosa. First responders found the wrecked plane upside down in a farm field.
Pilot dies in small plane crash near Oskaloosa
OSKALOOSA, Iowa (AP) — The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a fatal plane crash in south-central Iowa.
Authorities believe the small plane crashed Saturday afternoon after striking a power line near the town of Oskaloosa. The pilot was killed, but authorities have not disclosed the pilot's name. No one else was on the plane.
Authorities have not said why the plane was flying so low to the ground.

The audit report released Friday says the special investigation of the Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter in Oskaloosa found improper personal purchases by the shelter's former director, Lindsey Sime, who used shelter credit cards.

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (AP) — State officials are testing fur found at the site of a black bear sighting in southeastern Iowa.
The Oskaloosa Herald reports (http://bit.ly/2t8LqxD ) that the Mahaska County Sheriff's Office received a report of a black bear strolling through a soybean field on Wednesday.
Officials were not able to find a bear, but officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources collected fur samples believed to belong to a black bear for testing.
GRINNELL, Iowa (AP) — Two people have died in a crash in east-central Iowa near Grinnell.
Cedar Rapids television station KCRG reports (http://bit.ly/2qe7aoy ) that the two-vehicle crash happened Friday afternoon south of Grinnell on Highway 146 in Poweshiek County. Police say one of the vehicles was in the northbound lane when a second southbound vehicle crossed the center line, causing the head-on crash.

Mahaska Health Partnership CEO Jay Christensen said Wednesday that the Oskaloosa hospital discharged its last psychiatric inpatient on Monday.
Area bowlers help Keokuk make state
It was a banner day for the Keokuk High School bowling teams.
The Keokuk boys and girls won Class 2A District 4 titles at Iris Bowling Center in Mount Pleasant Tuesday. Both teams have qualified for the Class 2A State Meet at Plaza Lanes in Des Moines Tuesday.
It was the first time the Keokuk boys advanced to state since the sport was sanctioned by the Iowa High School Athletic Association.
Keokuk shares the program with Central Lee and Holy Trinity Catholic High School.
2 Iowa breweries are battling over similar names

Knoxville-based Peace Tree Brewing produces a beer called No Coast IPA, The Des Moines Register (http://dmreg.co/2brUeTz ) reports. And a new brewery opening in Oskaloosa is named NoCoast Beer Co.
The new brewery applied in December for federal trademarks on the names NoCoast, NoCoast Brewery and NoCoast Brewing Co.
