HUA HIN, Thailand (AP) — American qualifier Jennifer Brady achieved her second career top-20 win when she upset Caroline Garcia of France 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the first round of the Thailand Open on Tuesday.
Brady, ranked 117th, used aggressive and consistent groundstrokes to upset Garcia, ranked 19th, in two hours for her first win against the Frenchwoman in three attempts.
"I knew what to expect," Brady said. "From the first point of the match, I knew my intensity was up."

Maria Sharapova held on to edge 39-year-old Patty Schnyder, the oldest female qualifier in Grand Slam history, in the U.S. Open's first round.
Sharapova let a big second-set lead slip away, then needed four match points to close out Schnyder 6-2, 7-6 (6).
This was their ninth career meeting, but first in 10 years. Schnyder initially retired in 2011, but is now back on tour.

Madison Keys secured the decisive point for the visiting team by beating Pauline Parmentier 7-6 (4), 6-4 in the second reverse singles. Keys' victory gave the U.S. an unassailable 3-1 lead over France in the World Group semifinals.

PARIS (AP) — France captain Amelie Mauresmo kept faith in the same players for the Fed Cup final against the two-time defending champion Czech Republic next week.
Caroline Garcia, Kristina Mladenovic, Alize Cornet, and Pauline Parmentier were picked on Wednesday to face the Czechs at home in Strasbourg on Nov. 12-13 on an indoor hard court.
