UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Reilly Opelka ousted No. 5 seed and 2018 semifinalist Adrian Mannarino of France 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 in a first-round match Tuesday at the New York Open.
Opelka upset fellow American John Isner in January at the Australian Open. Isner is the No. 1 seed this week in the indoor tournament on Long Island and plays his opening match Wednesday.
Tsitsipas, Sock reach Stockholm Open quarterfinals
STOCKHOLM (AP) — Third-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas and No. 4 Jack Sock both needed three sets to reach the quarterfinals of the Stockholm Open on Wednesday.
Tsitsipas beat John Millman of Australia 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in a little more than two hours, while Sock outlasted Swedish home favorite Elias Ymer 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 at the indoor hardcourt tournament. Chung Hyeon of South Korea also reached the quarters by beating American Denis Kudla 6-3, 6-3.
Polansky ends Grand Slam season as tennis’ luckiest loser
NEW YORK (AP) — Peter Polansky was still trying to qualify for the U.S. Open when fellow players began congratulating him.
When it comes to tennis' luckiest loser, there was no need to wait to see if he'd win.
Polansky lost to No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev on Tuesday in the first round, but not until after he'd become the first player to compete in all four Grand Slam tournaments in a season as a "lucky loser."
TORONTO (AP) — Four-time champion Novak Djokovic advanced to the third round of the Rogers Cup on Wednesday, defeating Canadian wild card Peter Polansky 6-3, 6-4.
Djokovic, coming off his fourth Wimbledon title last month, fired seven aces and never faced a break point in the 1-hour, 25-minute match.
A former world No. 1, Djokovic is seeded ninth at the Toronto tournament. He last won the Rogers Cup in 2016.
Nadal, Federer win opening matches at Rogers Cup
MONTREAL (AP) — Top-seeded Rafael Nadal and No. 2 Roger Federer cruised to easy victories Wednesday in their opening matches at the Rogers Cup.
Nadal breezed past Borna Coric of Croatia 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the third round, while Federer routed Canadian Peter Polansky, 6-2, 6-1 in 53 minutes.
Fritz saves 3 match points to beat No. 8 seed Lu in Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Taylor Fritz saved three match points in a third-set tiebreaker to beat No. 8 seed Yen-Hsun Lu 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (7) on Tuesday night in the first round of the Memphis Open.
Fritz, the runner-up in this event last year, won without ever breaking Lu's serve.
Earlier Tuesday, qualifier Darian King defeated No. 5 seed Bernard Tomic 6-4, 6-4. King, ranked 140th in the world, dropped just 12 points in 10 service games against the 32nd-ranked Tomic.
