KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Volunteers believe the best way for them to stay atop the rankings is by upping their defensive intensity.
"When you go back to where we were two years ago and where we were last year, the biggest change in our program was when we got to where we could defend people," said coach Rick Barnes, who's in his fourth season at Tennessee.

The Volunteers announced Wednesday that they've signed Burns, a 6-foot-8, 250-pound recruit from Rock Hill, South Carolina. Burns will enroll this week and will be eligible to play in the 2018-19 season.
Burns was originally considered a 2019 prospect before deciding last month to reclassify to the 2018 class. He graduated early on May 25.

Darrington arrived at Tennessee last year after being named a first-team junior-college All-American at Vincennes (Indiana) University, but the 6-foot-1 guard from Toledo, Ohio, struggled to find a role with the Vols.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee and Memphis have agreed to renew their basketball rivalry starting next season.
The Volunteers and Tigers will play Dec. 15 at Memphis' FedEx Forum in the first meeting between the programs since the 2012-13 season.
They'll meet again at Knoxville's Thompson-Boling Arena in the 2019-20 season and at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena in 2020-21. Exact dates for the Knoxville and Nashville games haven't been set.

With the Tennessee coach back in familiar territory, Admiral Schofield had 15 points and 12 rebounds as the Volunteers opened their first NCAA under Barnes with a 73-47 win over Wright State on Thursday.
"The biggest thing is we came out and did what we said we were going to do, try to run them out of their offense, and against a great team," Schofield said.

Maten and Tennessee forward Grant Williams were unanimous first-team picks on the all-SEC team announced Tuesday. Tennessee's Rick Barnes was named coach of the year and Alabama freshman guard Collin Sexton was selected as newcomer of the year by the 15-person media panel.
