Rays’ Cash will stick with using an opener in 2019
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Naturally, Tampa Bay's Kevin Cash was the opening manager to speak at the winter meetings.
Cash said Monday the Rays will stick with their revolutionary practice of using an "opener" next season.
The Rays deviated from baseball tradition this year, regularly using a relief pitcher to begin games rather than a traditional starting pitcher. Tampa Bay went 46-38 with usual starters and 44-34 when utilizing the bullpen.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Before slipping into the baby costume that was part of rookie dress-up travel day for the late-surging Tampa Bay Rays, Ryan Yarbrough broke a record that had stood since the team's first season 20 years ago.
And Tommy Pham homered twice for the still playoff-hopeful Rays in another win for another sweep.
Rays beat Orioles 10-5 for 10th straight home win
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The surging Tampa Bay offense helped Ryan Yarbrough tie a team pitching record.
Yarbrough struggled but got his 14th win, most among major league rookies, and the Rays won their 10th straight home game by beating the Baltimore Orioles 10-5 on Saturday night.
The 14 wins equal Rolando Arrojo's franchise rookie mark set in 1998.
"It's a pretty cool accomplishment," Yarbrough said.

The franchise record for consecutive scoreless innings is 27, set in 2013. Tampa Bay began this streak with 14 shutout innings against the Boston Red Sox, including a 2-0 win Sunday.

Not even 24 hours later, Romo will make his second.

"I'm sure it will be talked about, but hopefully it works," Cash said.

"I was just worrying about going as far as I could today and kind of play it by ear after that," Yarbrough said.
