GUANGZHOU, China (AP) — Sabine Lisicki has recorded her first win since February in a WTA-level match with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over two-time Grand Slam finalist Vera Zvonareva at the Guangzhou Open.
Lisicki lost her opening service game but recovered to take a 4-1 lead before the 34-year-old Zvonareva, runner-up at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in 2010, won 12 straight points to level at 4-4. Lisicki, a Wimbledon finalist in 2013, held and then broke to seal the first set.

TOKYO (AP) — Top-seeded Zhang Shuai advanced to the second round of the Japan Women's Open on Tuesday with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Magdalena Frech of Poland.
Zhang will next face Japan's Nao Hibino, who beat former finalist Eugenie Bouchard 6-4, 6-4. Bouchard, who had a career-high No. 5 ranking in 2014 when she reached the Wimbledon final, lost in the second round at the U.S. Open and was in Japan aiming to return to the top 100 after an inconsistent season.

McHale dominated with solid groundstrokes and took advantage of 10 double-faults by Tormo, who was coming off a win over three-time champion Sam Stosur, to set up a quarterfinal clash with Elise Mertens of Belgium.

TOKYO (AP) — Jana Fett advanced to the second round of the Japan Women's Open by beating top-seeded Kristina Mladenovic 6-4, 6-3 on Wednesday.
Mladenovic rallied briefly by winning three games in the second set before the 20-year-old qualifier from Croatia served out the victory.
GSTAAD, Switzerland (AP) — Second-seeded Kiki Bertens beat her doubles partner in the Gstaad Ladies Championship quarterfinals on Friday.
Bertens, ranked No. 35, overcame six double-faults and broke fifth-seeded Johanna Larsson's serve twice in each set to win 6-4, 6-4.
They were back in action later Friday as the top-seeded pair in the doubles competition at the clay-court event.
Czechs make Fed Cup semifinals with 3-2 win over Spain
OSTRAVA, Czech Republic (AP) — Barbora Strycova sent defending champion Czech Republic to the semifinals of the Fed Cup with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Lara Arruabarrena of Spain in the second reverse singles match on Sunday.
The 17th-ranked Strycova failed to serve it out at 5-2, wasting two match points before closing out the encounter with a backhand drop shot on her fifth match point.
Her victory gave the Czech Republic an insurmountable 3-1 lead over Spain in the best-of-five first-round series.
Muguruza opens for Spain against Czech player Strycova
OSTRAVA, Czech Republic (AP) — French Open champion Garbine Muguruza will face Barbora Strycova in the opening match when Spain plays the defending champion Czech Republic in the first round of the Fed Cup.
Third-ranked Karolina Pliskova will face Lara Arruabarrena in the second singles match on an indoor hardcourt in the eastern city of Ostrava.
In Sunday's reverse singles, Pliskova will play the seventh-ranked Muguruza, and Strycova will face Arruabarrena.
4th-seeded Suarez Navarro advances, Bouchard beaten in Linz
LINZ, Austria (AP) — Fourth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro kept her hopes of qualifying for the WTA finals alive with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Mona Barthel of Germany in the first round of the Generali Ladies on Tuesday.
The 12th-ranked Spaniard, who is 10th in the race for the eight-player season-ending event, dropped her opening service game on the only break point she faced in the match. She closed out the win by taking the last five games in a row.
