Most New York districts cite shortage of school bus drivers
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York school districts say they need more bus drivers.
A report released Thursday says a shortage of drivers is the top concern of 60 percent of school transportation directors, and an additional 23 percent of districts consider it a major problem.
The report was a joint effort by the New York State School Boards Association, New York Association for Pupil Transportation and National Association for Pupil Transportation.
Senate and House leaders want school finance chief suspended
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas House and Senate leaders are asking that the state's longtime top school finance official and his immediate staff be suspended while auditors determine if the Education Department has improperly allocated up to $405 million in school transportation costs to the state's school districts.

Schools fill transportation service void
STOWE, Vt. (AP) — School districts in Vermont are looking to alternative solutions to address transportation needs.
WCAX-TV reports (http://bit.ly/2ghdf1e ) Lamoille South Supervisory Union and Chittenden East Supervisory Union have contracted Trusty Transport Services. Owner Jessica Oszajca says the company focuses on providing transportation for students who attend alternative programs or experience homelessness.
Maine schools facing bus driver shortage turn to vets
LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — School districts facing shortages of bus drivers are turning to a new program to encourage military veterans to fill the gap in Maine.
The state labor and education departments are offering free training at school districts for veterans and others interested in working as school bus drivers and mechanics.
Drivers can earn $11 to $25 per hour, depending on the school district.

Gov. Greg Abbott signed legislation Thursday that allows voters to decide the fate of Dallas County Schools, which is responsible for the daily transportation of more than 75,000 students in North Texas.
DCS earlier sold public land to combat its financial problems, but taxpayers will have to fund the long-term costs of the $25 million deal.

GREENWICH — The school budget has come in nearly $380,000 higher than expected and the Board of Education and First Selectman Peter Tesei are at odds over who is responsible.

Nixon releases $8M from Volkswagen settlement with Missouri
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — About $8.7 million Missouri received from a settlement over Volkswagen's emissions cheating scandal will go to school transportation and other programs.
Gov. Jay Nixon on Friday released a matching $8.7 million in previously restricted spending for this year's budget after the state received the settlement money.
Nixon this year blocked about $174 million in planned spending, he said to balance the budget.
Courtesy busing program that serves 3,000 Paterson students undergoing cutbacks
