Storm drops snow on communities across southeastern Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Snow was falling early Wednesday in the Tucson area and other communities across southeastern Arizona.
The state Department of Transportation reported whiteout conditions on State Route 90 near Sierra Vista and said it was sending plows to Interstate 10 in the Benson area.
The National Weather Service said snowfall by midmorning was beginning to decrease in Nogales in Santa Cruz County but was expected to intensity in Douglas in Cochise County as the morning went on.

SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) — Cochise County sheriff's officials say a woman has been reunited with her mother's ashes after the father of her child threw the urn into the street.
Sheriff's spokeswoman Carol Capas said Tuesday that investigators located the urn's owner after receiving a tip from the public.
The gold and silver urn was discovered near Nevada and Arabian drives in Sierra Vista on Sunday afternoon.

PHOENIX (AP) — A man convicted of killing two young girls in 1967 and released to home arrest in 2015 is back in prison after violating his parole, according to authorities.
Phoenix TV station KPHO reports William Huff's parole officer found an 8-year-old girl sleeping at Huff's residence this week, in violation of his parole.
Arizona Department of Corrections officials told KPHO that the child is the daughter of Huff's girlfriend, but there's no indication the girl was hurt in any way.

Police: 4 dogs killed as officers rescue boy after attack
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) — Sierra Vista police say several dogs bit and seriously injured a 9-year-old boy in the yard of the home where the dogs and the boy lived and that responding officers fatally shot three dogs to rescue the child.
According to police, a fourth dog was fatally shot when it appeared to charge an officer during the Wednesday incident.
Police Sgt. Brian Sebastian said the boy is expected to recover from is injuries.

SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) — Fort Huachuca officials say a construction crew found several pieces of unexploded ordnance from the 1950s while they were working on a motor pool project at the base's Electronic Proving Ground.
An email from the base Public Affairs Office says military police were notified on the unexploded ordnance found Monday and personnel are restricted from that area.

Pima County Superior Court officials say 20-year-old Anthony Gracia was sentenced Monday on charges of motor vehicle theft and facilitation to commit vehicle theft.

The unprecedented statewide job action began Thursday and continued Friday, resulting in closures of schools that educate the vast majority of the state's 1.1 million public school students.
Recent teacher protests in Arizona and Colorado have followed similar job actions in West Virginia, Kentucky and Oklahoma.

Sierra Vista police say officers came to the campus of Buena High School in Sierra Vista, Arizona on Monday following reports of the photo.
Police say the rifle ended up being an inert, non-firing replica.

SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) — A southern Arizona elementary school was placed on lockdown after authorities received reports of an active shooter.
Authorities say a 14-year-old student was later found dead in a school bathroom from a gunshot wound in an apparent suicide Tuesday.
The name of the boy wasn't immediately released.
Cochise County Sheriff's officials say an investigation into the death is ongoing.
Sierra Vista man is accused of false reporting to police
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) — Cochise County Sheriff's officials say a Sierra Vista man has been arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft and false reporting to a police officer.
They say 41-year-old Cameron Smith was booked Saturday night into the county jail. It was unclear Monday if he has a lawyer yet.

Domestic violence incident in Sierra Vista ends in a suicide
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) — Authorities say a Sierra Vista man who barricaded himself in his home after a domestic violence situation has died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police say 29-year-old Kevin Jacobs died at a Tucson-area trauma center.
Officers responded to reports of armed man making threatening statements Saturday morning.
They arrived to find Jacobs brandishing a .45 caliber semiautomatic pistol and threatening to shoot a family member.
Huachuca City fire chief is arrested and accused of theft
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) — Huachuca City's fire chief is accused of felony theft and trafficking in stolen property.
Sierra Vista police say 54-year-old Jon Allmon was arrested Monday night after officers executed a search warrant at his home as part of an investigation into fraudulent bank checks.
Police say 11 forged checks were deposited into a bank account that belongs to Allmon over a seven-day period and the money was immediately withdrawn by him at ATMs.
Fort Huachuca to lose band under changes being made by Army
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) — An Army base in southern Arizona is losing its band.
Officials at Fort Huachuca in Sierra Vista say the Army Military Intelligence Corps Band also designated the 62nd Army Band will inactivate by Oct. 15, 2018 due to changes the service is making in its overall music support structure.
Officials say the band will perform at events already on its calendar through December but won't accept new requests for community events beginning Oct. 15.
Congresswoman begins 800-mile hike of Arizona Trail
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona Congresswoman Martha McSally is running for re-election but she's also walking.
McSally on Saturday began hiking the 800-mile (1,287-kilometer) Arizona Trail in segments by completing a 3.6-mile (near 6-kilometer) segment within Coronado National Memorial near Sierra Vista in Cochise County.
The trail links extends from Utah on the north to Mexico on the south.
Man sentenced for trying to bus teen from Minnesota for sex
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — A Sierra Vista man has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for trying to get a teenage girl to travel from Minnesota to Arizona and have sex with him.
Prosecutors say 23-year-old Matthew Demond Lyons also was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years of supervised release after he serves his prison term and was ordered to register as a sex offender.
5 mobile homes burned in Sierra Vista fire, no injuries
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) — Sierra Vista police say five mobile homes were damaged in a fire.
Sierra Vista Battalion Chief Brian Jones says four of the burned mobile homes were vacant. The residents of the fifth mobile home were able to escape safely.
Police say the fire broke out at the Garden Canyon Family Mobile Home Park on Monday afternoon. The fire was put out within an hour.
Illegal poker room in Sierra Vista shut down by authorities
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona Department of Gaming officials say an illegal poker room in Sierra Vista has been shut down.
They say during the execution of the warrant Thursday morning, four people suspected of being connected to the unregulated poker room were taken into custody.
Those suspects now face charges ranging from conducting an illegal criminal enterprise, to the promotion of gambling.
The charges range from a class 1 misdemeanor to a class 3 felony.
Woman reports shooting intruder; man critically wounded
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) — Cochise County authorities say a 26-year-old man is hospitalized in critical condition after being shot in an incident in which a Sierra Vista-area woman reported shooting an intruder.
Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Carol Capas says the 69-year-old woman called Thursday night to report she'd just shot a man wearing dark clothing who had attempted to break into her home.
The woman said her home had been burglarized earlier Thursday.
