Political commentator Schmidt joins Showtime’s ‘The Circus’
NEW YORK (AP) — Political commentator Steve Schmidt says he'll take some inspiration from former NFL players who become television analysts when he starts appearing on Showtime's "The Circus."
Veteran Republican campaign strategist Steve Schmidt said Wednesday he is renouncing the GOP — in part because of what he calls President Donald Trump's unethical and corrupt behavior, but more because the party's leadership in Congress has failed to hold Trump to account.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Speaker of the House Paul Ryan announced Wednesday that he will be retiring at the end of his term. Ryan retired his backbone back in 2016.
For the first time in the 26 years of Down by the Riverside, a headline act has canceled a scheduled performance.
In a change announced today, Micky Dolenz of the Monkees will replace Burton Cummings as the headliner for the final Down by the Riverside concert of the season.
Also added to the lineup for the Aug. 13 concert is the Fab Four, a Beatles tribute band.
Construction projects come and go, but Down by the Riverside just keeps rolling along.
MENLO PARK -- A new coalition has formed to oppose what it calls "the dangerous direction that our elected officials are taking" on development.
Steve Schmidt, a former Menlo Park mayor, is a core member of the coalition called Voters for Equitable & Responsible Growth (VERG).
