Acuna uses power, speed to help Braves pad division lead
ATLANTA (AP) — Ronald Acuna Jr. loves being a spark at the top of the Braves' batting order.
"It's part of my personality and the kind of baseball player that I am," he said through a translator. "That's the energy I try to bring. The energy is contagious, and I just try to make sure I bring it out there and help everyone win in that way."
Pirates pitcher Archer appears to hurt leg while batting
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Chris Archer has left his start with left leg discomfort.
Archer was removed after four innings Monday night against the Atlanta Braves. It was his fourth start since being acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in a trade July 31.
Archer appeared to be injured while batting in the third inning. He fell as he attempted to check his swing while striking out against Bryse Wilson, who was making his major league debut.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Rhys Hoskins let two fastballs down the middle go for strikes and somehow saw another one.
He crushed it.
Hoskins hit a go-ahead three-run homer, Aaron Nola tossed seven impressive innings and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-2 Saturday.
Nola (2-1) allowed two runs, six hits and struck out nine to help the Phillies win their third straight game and improve to 8-1 at home.
The Pirates have lost five of six after an 11-4 start.
Story’s 3-run blast boosts Rockies past Pirates 6-2
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Trevor Story showed signs of snapping out of his early season funk over the weekend, even as the Colorado Rockies shortstop whiffed over and over against the Washington Nationals.
The proof arrived Monday night at frigid PNC Park after he quickly fell behind Pittsburgh starter Steven Brault with two runners on in the fourth inning. Story worked the count even, and when Brault's 82 mph slider didn't end up in the dirt as Brault planned, Story's hitless skid was over.
The Pirates acted quickly to save starting pitcher Joe Musgrave from himself, placing him on the 10-day disabled list Monday morning with a muscle strain in his right (throwing) shoulder.
Musgrove, who got a late start to spring training because of shoulder discomfort, was scheduled to pitch Thursday in the first game of the four-game series against the Cincinnati Reds. But he told Pirates medical personnel he didn't recover well after an outing Saturday in a minor league game in Bradenton, Fla.

DETROIT (AP) — Gregory Polanco hit a three-run homer in the 13th inning to lift the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 13-10 victory over Detroit on Friday — about an hour after the Tigers spilled onto the field to celebrate what they thought was a game-winning hit of their own.
BRADENTON, Fla. — Pirates pitcher Steven Brault used to watch Bugs Bunny cartoons at his grandmother's house, but now he's partial to "Dragon Ball Z," an animated Japanese TV series that features "villains from the darkest corners of space."
If you want to know how cartoons became a point of discussion in the Pirates clubhouse at LECOM Park, you need to listen to Brault's weekly podcast he produces with co-star and teammate Trevor Williams.

Galvis hits 19th homer to lead Phillies past Pirates 6-2
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Freddy Galvis has a handwritten note stuck on his locker reminding him to keep the ball out of the air.
There's no signature. It's simply inscribed "#No. 20."
Even Mike Schmidt (yes, The No. 20) could agree that if Galvis does put the ball in the air, it may as well soar out of the park.
Galvis continued his home run surge, hitting his 19th of the season to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 6-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night.

Rookie Brault solid but Pirates fall to Brewers 3-1
MILWAUKEE (AP) — In his second major-league start, Pittsburgh Pirates rookie Steven Brault kept his team in the game even though he didn't have his best stuff.
The Brewers put runners on base in all six innings against Brault, but he limited the damage in a 3-1 loss to Milwaukee on Friday.
"I kind of came out over-aggressive, I think is how to explain the first four innings especially," Brault said. "I found myself just kind of, you know, trying too...
