The Sumter County Sheriff's Office said in a news release deputies responding to a call of a shooting Saturday found a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. The sheriff's office cited witnesses at the scene who said the shooter drove up and they did not hear an argument. Moments later they heard at least one gunshot and the shooter fled.

Man’s body pulled from South Carolina river
CAYCE, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina coroner says a man whose body was pulled from the Congaree River drowned.
Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said in a news release Wednesday night that the victim was 50-year-old Thomas Wright Sumter of Columbia. Fisher said an autopsy Thursday confirmed that Sumter had drowned.
The Cayce Department of Public Safety recovered the body around 2 p.m. Wednesday. Sgt. Evan Antley said someone on tubing on the river spotted the body.

Sumter County deputies said Monday the man most recently stole a new car from a Sumter dealership, drove it to Beaufort and left it at a dealership there before stealing another car.

Sumter County deputies said the officer received a text about 2 p.m. Thursday offering to sell marijuana.
Authorities say the deputy texted back with the car he would be in and arranged the sale in less than three hours.
Girl accused of writing shooting threat in school bathroom
SUMTER, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a 13-year-old girl wrote a threat on the restroom floor at her South Carolina middle school.
News outlets report that students at Chestnut Oaks Middle School found and reported a message threatening to "shoot the school down." Investigators say surveillance footage led them to identify the girl, who is accused of writing the message while class was in session Monday.

SUMTER, S.C. (AP) — "It all started with Mason," said Kaela Fleming, the adoptive mother of two young children.
"He tested positive for five different drugs when he was born."
Kaela, an officer with Sumter Police Department, did not hesitate after receiving the call to help someone in need.

Fire officials tell The Sumter Item that 68-year-old Eva Harvin was found on the porch of her Sumter home just after 1 a.m. Thursday.

Fire officials tell local media outlets they got a call about a fire at a house in Sumter just after 1 a.m. Thursday.
The Sumter County coroner says 68-year-old Eva Harvin died in the fire. Her 71-year-old husband was flown to Augusta Burn Center for treatment of burns to at least two-thirds of his body.

Sumter Police spokeswoman Tonyia McGirt said in a news release that 22-year-old Kentwon Savon Thames-Daniels of Sumter turned himself in to officers Monday evening.
McGirt said Thames-Daniels is being charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

SC agents investigate man shot while running from police
SUMTER, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina detectives are looking into why a local police officer shot an armed-robbery suspect.
Sumter Police Department spokeswoman Tonyia McGirt said Sunday that State Law Enforcement Division agents were called after the Saturday night shooting that started with a stickup.
McGirt said in a news release the wounded man is 35-year-old Christopher Jermaine Cummings. He was treated at a hospital and released to authorities.
Worker killed by masked men at S Carolina convenience store
SUMTER, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say the clerk of a South Carolina convenience store has been shot and killed.
Sumter Police said two men wearing masks entered the Save-Mart Grocery on U.S. Highway 521 and at least one of them fired toward the employee in the store.
Authorities say the employee died. The statement from police did not say if they men were trying to rob the store.
Public to be heard on proposal to fix elevator at Fort Sumter in South Carolina
For some, the hardest part of visiting Fort Sumter National Monument is getting to see it.
For five years now, the handicapped accessible chairlifts haven't worked. They served as a visitor elevator to the ramparts of Battery Huger, as well as the gift shop, the flags and the memorials along the fort wall that faces the Atlantic Ocean.
Currently, the only way up is to walk four flights of stairs — not an option for a person who has a disability. The U.S. Park Service wants to correct that.
Fort Sumter seeks comment on new plan for disabled access
SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — The Fort Sumter National Monument is seeking public comments on a proposal to add ramps and an enclosed elevator for the disabled.
The monument now has inoperable accessibility chairlifts.
The proposed design includes a ramp leading from the parade ground of Fort Sumter to the lower level of Battery Huger which will provide access to restrooms and water.
Students seek $55M in damages, say dorms had toxic mold
SUMTER, S.C. (AP) — Five current and former students are seeking $55 million in damages in a lawsuit that says they were exposed to toxic mold while living in three dormitories at a South Carolina college.
Multiple media outlets report the five have sued Morris College, a historically black liberal arts college in Sumter. They say they were exposed to mold and other hazardous substances while living in the three dorms in 2013.
