Top seed Cornet out of Guangzhou Open in 1st round
GUANGZHOU, China (AP) — Top-seeded Alize Cornet lost a rain-interrupted match to Jennifer Brady 6-0, 6-3 to exit the Guangzhou Open in the first round.
Cornet, who was incorrectly admonished by a chair umpire for changing her shirt during a match at the U.S. Open, was trailing 6-0, 2-1 when play was suspended because of rain in southern China on Monday. The 2014 Guangzhou Open finalist won only two more games on Tuesday, and Brady advanced to a second-round match against Kozlova Kateryna.
Wawrinka, Azarenka, Kuznetsova given US Open wild cards
NEW YORK (AP) — Stan Wawrinka never got to defend his 2016 U.S. Open title, forced to miss last year's tournament because of a knee injury that dropped him far down the rankings.
The U.S. Tennis Association made sure he has a spot this year.
Wawrinka and former women's No. 1 Victoria Azarenka received wild cards Tuesday for the year's final Grand Slam tournament. So did Svetlana Kuznetsova, another U.S. Open champion.
Kuznetsova saves 4 match points, tops Vekic at Citi Open
WASHINGTON (AP) — Svetlana Kuznetsova won her second title at the Citi Open, and first at any WTA tournament in two years, by erasing four match points to beat Donna Vekic 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2 on Sunday.
The No. 7 seed Vekic was one point from victory four times in the second set but was not able to close it out.
Kuznetsova is a two-time Grand Slam champion, but she is currently ranked only 128th, the lowest spot for a women's champion at the hard-court tournament.
Top seed Mladenovic injured at Samsung Open
LUGANO, Switzerland (AP) — Top seed Kristina Mladenovic retired with a back injury in the first round of the weather-affected Samsung Open on Thursday.
Mladenovic was trailing 7-6 (5), 3-2 against Tamara Korpatsch, a German qualifier ranked 157 places below the No. 19 Frenchwoman, when she withdrew.
The clay-court event has been hard hit by rain and two more top players lost first-round matches Thursday.
Kuznetsova out of Australian Open after left wrist surgery
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Two-time major winner Svetlana Kuznetsova has withdrawn from next month's Australian Open after having surgery on her left wrist.
Tennis Australia on Friday said No. 12-ranked Kuznetsova and China's Sasai Zheng, with a right knee injury, were the only players ranked in the top 100 who are confirmed as not playing the Jan. 15-28 tournament at Melbourne Park.
Roger Federer back for Switzerland at Hopman Cup team event
PERTH, Australia (AP) — Roger Federer will return to partner Belinda Bendic for Switzerland at the Hopman Cup, while Japan will make its first appearance in 16 years at the international mixed team event.
After the last Hopman Cup, Federer went on to win the Australian Open and Wimbledon, his 18th and 19th Grand Slam singles titles.
Two-time Grand Slam singles Angelique Kerber will represent Germany with ATP No. 4 Alexander Zverev, tournament officials said Wednesday.
Japan’s Nara upsets 2004 champion Kuznetsova at US Open
NEW YORK (AP) — Japan's Kurumi Nara eliminated 2004 U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 on Thursday night to reach the third round at Flushing Meadows for the first time since 2013.
It was the first victory in nine matches against opponents ranked in the top 10 for Nara, who is No. 116.
"Biggest win of my career," she called it.
Nara has never been past the third round at any Grand Slam tournament.
Attack hits home for Suarez Navarro
Carla Suarez Navarro’s quest to reach the quarterfinals in Cincinnati came to an end with a straight-sets loss to Svetlana Kuznetsova. However, a few minutes after leaving the court, she suddenly found herself not quite as concerned about the defeat.
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — New WTA No. 1 Karolina Pliskova and top-ranked man Andy Murray headline the direct entry lists for the U.S. Open.
Pliskova, the 2016 runner-up at Flushing Meadows, is joined by four past U.S. Open champions: Angelique Kerber, Venus Williams, Sam Stosur and Svetlana Kuznetsova. Other past Grand Slam champions in the field: Garbine Muguruza, Petra Kvitova, Francesca Schiavone, Victoria Azarenka and Jelena Ostapenko.
LONDON (AP) — Svetlana Kuznetsova noticed it. Her coach even complained about it during the second set.
But Garbine Muguruza said she was not being coached by her team during Tuesday's 6-3, 6-4 quarterfinal victory at Wimbledon.
"It was pretty clear because we all speak Spanish here. She was talking to her all the time," Kuznetsova said. "It's her physio. I mean, I know she acts like this all the time. I don't think it's appropriate, but OK, I was focused on my game."
Rain frustrates Djokovic at Eastbourne
EASTBOURNE, England (AP) — Novak Djokovic completed just one game of his second-round match against Vasek Pospisil at the Eastbourne International before rain washed out the day's play at the Wimbledon warmup event on Tuesday.
First up on Centre Court, the top-seeded Djokovic held serve for 1-0 and was 30-15 up in the second game when the players went off for rain. The covers stayed on until play was abandoned just before 5 p.m. local time (1600 GMT).
PARIS - Garbine Muguruza did not take kindly to the way spectators pulled for her opponent - her French opponent, mind you - at the French Open.

Former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Oceane Dodin of France to reach the third round of the French Open.
Kuznetsova, who won at Roland Garros in 2009, beat the 20-year-old Dodin 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-3 in the final singles match to finish on Wednesday.
The eighth-seeded Russian will next play Shuai Zhang of China.
Cibulkova surprised by Putintseva in St. Petersburg semis
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — Dominika Cibulkova, ranked No. 5 in the world, was surprisingly defeated by unseeded Yulia Putintseva in the semifinals of the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy on Saturday.
Cibulkova, from Slovakia, appeared likely to advance to the final after breaking Putintseva midway through the deciding set, but Putintseva fought back to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Halep withdraws from St. Petersburg event with knee injury
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — Simona Halep withdrew from the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy on Friday because of a knee injury, the same issue that she blamed for her opening-round loss at the Australian Open.
The fourth-ranked Romanian had said she was pain-free after her win over Ana Konjuh this week.
Halep was the top-seeded player in St. Petersburg. Her withdrawal sends Russian wild-card entry Natalia Vikhlyantseva into the semifinals, matching her best showing at a WTA tournament.

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — Top-seeded Simona Halep won her first match since an opening-round exit at the Australian Open, beating Ana Konjuh 6-4, 7-6 (2) Wednesday at the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy.
The fourth-ranked Romanian, who was broken three times, will next face Natalia Vikhlyantseva. The Russian wild-card entry defeated eighth-seeded Daria Kasatkina 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Daria Gavrilova through to 2nd round in St. Petersburg
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — Daria Gavrilova followed up her Australian Open fourth-round effort by reaching the second round of the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy in beating Russian wild card Anna Kalinskaya 6-4, 7-5 on Monday.
The Australian had problems holding serve against Kalinskaya and was a break down in the second set. She will run into another Russian next, third-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Svetlana Kuznetsova has a different look than most tennis players. And it's not just all the tattoos.
In a tennis world dominated by the bright colors of Nike and Adidas, as well as new fashion entrants like Uniqlo, Kuznetsova has taken a risk with her clothing sponsor — a Chinese company called Qiaodan which has been at the center of a high-profile trademark dispute.
Federer’s 17 majors stack up nicely against everyone else
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — The 64 players contesting second-round matches at the Australian Open on Wednesday have won a total of 36 Grand Slam singles titles. One guy, however, has nearly half of them.
Of the 17 titles captured by Roger Federer, who plays American qualifier Noah Rubin at Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday, four have been at Melbourne Park. Although he hasn't lifted the trophy here since 2010.
Wild-card entry Bouchard wins 1st-round match at Sydney
SYDNEY (AP) — Eugenie Bouchard made the most of her wild-card entry to the Sydney International, beating Zhang Shuai of China 7-6 (1), 6-2 on Sunday in a first-round match.
Bouchard, a 22-year-old former Wimbledon finalist, was beaten in the first round of the Brisbane International last week in her first warmup tournament for the Australian Open, which begins on Jan. 16 and where she was a surprise semifinalist in 2014.
Cibulkova’s winning debut faces final test in Kerber
SINGAPORE (AP) — Top-ranked Angelique Kerber and seventh-seeded Dominika Cibulkova will compete for the WTA Finals title on Sunday.
The top-seeded Kerber picked apart defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska's game in a textbook 6-2, 6-1 semifinal drubbing on Saturday.
This is Kerber's fourth trip to the WTA Finals and the first time she's advanced beyond the round-robin stage of the competition.
Radwanska advances to semifinals at WTA Finals
SINGAPORE (AP) — Defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska took the final spot in the semifinals of the WTA Finals, beating Karolina Pliskova 7-5, 6-3 on Friday.
Radwanska, who finished 2-1 in the round robin, will play top-seeded Angelique Kerber in Saturday's semifinals. Kerber won the Australian Open and the U.S. Open this season, and reached the Wimbledon final.
Kuznetsova makes semis at WTA Finals after beating Pliskova
SINGAPORE (AP) — Svetlana Kuznetsova became the first player to reach the last four of the WTA Finals after sealing her second round-robin victory this week, beating Karolina Pliskova on Wednesday.
Kuznetsova fell to the ground, smiling, after securing a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (6) win on a fourth match point.
"I felt the support of the crowd and I couldn't let anyone down," said Kuznetsova, who at 22-8 has the most three-set match wins this year. "So I had to fight."
Cut above: Kuznetsova resorts to scissors to beat Radwanska
SINGAPORE (AP) — Svetlana Kuznetsova snipped off part of her braid with scissors during a changeover before going on to beat defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 Monday at the season-ending WTA Finals. The sheared hair remained on her chair for the rest of the match.
Trailing 2-1 and down a break in the third set, Kuznetsova, without the benefit of a mirror, took scissors to the back of her head and chopped away.
