SAGUNT, Spain (AP) — Chris Froome maintained his lead of the Spanish Vuelta after Tejay van Garderen crashed twice during the sixth stage on Thursday.
Van Garderen entered the stage in second place at 10 seconds behind Froome. But the American slipped to fourth place and :30 seconds back after his error-prone day.
Esteban Chaves relieved Van Garderen as Froome's closest chaser at :11 behind, followed by Nicolas Roche at :13 back.
Froome takes Spanish Vuelta lead as Nibali wins 3rd stage
ANDORRA LA VELLA, Andorra (AP) — Vincenzo Nibali of Italy won the third stage of the Spanish Vuelta and Tour de France champion Chris Froome took the overall lead after a strong run in the first mountain stage on Monday.
Froome was ahead with about half a kilometer to go but Nibali made a charge in the final sprint to clinch the 158-kilometer (98-mile) stage from Prades to Andorra La Vella. Froome ended third, behind David De La Cruz of Spain.
ORTISEI, Italy (AP) — Tejay van Garderen claimed his first grand tour victory on the tough 18th stage of the Giro d'Italia as Tom Dumoulin kept the pink jersey on Thursday.
Van Garderen, of the United States, came round the inside of the final corner to edge Mikel Landa at the uphill finish of the 137-kilometer (85-mile) leg from Moeana to Ortisei.
TORTOSA, Spain (AP) — Alejandro Valverde defeated Chris Froome and Alberto Contador to win the decisive fifth stage of the Tour of Catalonia on Friday and take the overall lead going into the weekend.
Valverde won after dominating the final climb of the 182-kilometer (113-mile) stage from Valls to Tortosa. The Spaniard finished 13 seconds ahead of both Froome and Contador.
Valverde opened a 21-second lead over Froome and a 47-second gap to Contador in the overall standings.
Van Garderen keeps overall lead in Tour of Catalonia
IGUALADA, Spain (AP) — Tejay van Garderen of the U.S. successfully defended his lead in a Tour of Catalonia fourth stage that was cut short by 60 kilometers (37 miles) because of a snowstorm in northeastern Spain.
Nacer Bouhanni of France won the 136-kilometer (84-mile) stage after outsprinting Davide Cimolai of Italy in the final meters. Cimolai beat Bouhanni to win Monday's opening stage in a photo finish.
