People familiar with the situation say the former Atlanta Braves skipper has resumed walking and...
ATLANTA (AP) — For John Schuerholz, this all looks so familiar.
The youth. The exuberance. The enormous talent.
Back in 1991, Schuerholz took over as general manager of an Atlanta Braves team that was on the cusp of greatness. Hall of Famers-to-be Tom Glavine and John Smoltz had worked through their growing pains. Chipper Jones was beginning his climb through the minors, a first overall pick just getting started out on his road to Cooperstown.
Chipper Jones set to join familiar names in Hall of Fame
ATLANTA (AP) — When Chipper Jones took stock of all of the familiar names he's on the cusp of rejoining, he wondered if it might be time to expand the Baseball Hall of Fame.
"We need to see if we can erect our own room in Cooperstown," Jones quipped, flashing that dry sense of humor he was known for during his playing days.

Andruw Jones was leading the South Atlantic League in home runs at 17. He hit two home runs in a World Series game for the Atlanta Braves at 19. Jones, 40, also played for the New York Yankees alongside Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez while completing his Major League career with 434 home runs.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jason Vargas picked up his American League-leading 12th victory, Eric Hosmer hit a three-run homer and the Kansas City Royals defeated the Minnesota Twins 8-1 on Friday night.
Vargas (12-3) tied Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers for the major league lead in wins and lowered his ERA to 2.22, which tops the American League. He allowed two hits and one run over seven innings, while walking a season-high four.
Former Gamecocks assistant Shawn Elliott brings a South Carolina feel to Georgia State
As Cedric Williams showed recruits around what would become Georgia State’s new football stadium, the Charleston native made ample use of the facility’s past as Turner Field. In the locker room, the offensive line coach sold prospects on the notion that they’d be changing in the same area once used by the likes of Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and Chipper Jones.
“Most of them didn’t know who those guys were anyway,” Williams said with a laugh. “I told them, ‘Go ahead and Google it.’”

ATLANTA — The 2017 Atlanta Braves didn’t have to look hard for reminders of a winning past. The brass brought out the good stuff Friday night for the opener at Sun Trust Park, the Braves’ $672 million new home just outside the I-285 perimeter in Cobb County.
ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves leaned heavily on some of the biggest names from their past to help open their new park.

Sapakoff: Overdue Hall of Fame honor for former Braves GM John Schuerolz
Once during the rarefied midst of the Atlanta Braves’ still unbelievable and never-to-be-duplicated-in-any-sport run of 14 consecutive division titles, I asked John Schuerholz why he picked Greg Maddux instead of Barry Bonds.
The Braves already had a pitching rotation stocked with Tom Glavine, John Smoltz and Steve Avery during that critical free agent frenzy between the 1992 and 1993 seasons. Conventional diamond wisdom said they wanted homers.
