Four Cleveland pitchers limit Detroit to one hit in 8-0 win

Tigers place Jones on IL, recall Reyes
CHICAGO (AP) — The Detroit Tigers have placed outfielder JaCoby Jones on the 10-day injured list with a lower back strain and recalled outfielder Victor Reyes from Triple-A Toledo.
Reyes hits 1st HR, 3 RBIs as Tigers splits with Yankees 11-7
NEW YORK (AP) — Being a Rule 5 draft pick usually means putting in far more time before a game than during it. On Sunday, the hard work paid off for rookie Victor Reyes and the Detroit Tigers.
Reyes hit his first major league homer, doubled twice and singled in leading the Tigers over the New York Yankees 11-7.
Hicks, Martinez lead Tigers to 4-3 win over White Sox
CHICAGO (AP) — John Hicks showed off his hitting and his speed, and made a nice defensive play to help the Detroit Tigers get another big win against the Chicago White Sox.
Hicks homered and scored the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice in the eighth inning as the Tigers beat the White Sox 4-3 on Friday night. Victor Martinez had a two-run double to help Detroit improve to 4-0 at Guaranteed Rate Field this season, and 6-1 overall against the Chicago.
Tigers score three in the eighth to beat Blue Jays 7-4
DETROIT (AP) — John Hicks had a simple goal when he got to the plate in the eighth inning on Saturday.
He just wanted to put the ball in play. Hicks had struck out in his first three-at bats, but he now had a chance to put the Detroit Tigers ahead. In a 4-4 game, Detroit had loaded the bases with one out.
Reyes’ 3-run triple helps Tigers beat Angels 6-2
DETROIT (AP) — Ronny Rodriguez had a memorable major league debut, hitting singles, scoring a run and making plays at second and third base to help the Detroit Tigers beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-2 Thursday.
"Amazing day," Rodriguez said in front of his locker stall under a generic name plate and next to his suitcase. "I've been waiting for this the last eight years. It's a dream come true."
Rookie Reyes goes to ‘old school’ slide in key spot
Detroit — It went largely unnoticed, but rookie Victor Reyes made a heady base-running play in the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday night to give the Tigers an insurance run in their 4-2 win over the Orioles.
He was inserted into the game as a pinch-runner for Victor Martinez and was on third base with two outs. Dixon Machado was at the plate. Orioles pitcher Mychal Givens bounced a pitch that got through catcher Caleb Joseph.
Managing to win vs. developing for future: Gardenhire walks the line
Cleveland – In a different year – perhaps in any of the last three seasons in Detroit – rookie Victor Reyes would have been pinch-hit for Tuesday with the Tigers trailing by a run with one out in the ninth inning against veteran Indians closer Cody Allen.
But maybe in any of those other seasons, the Tigers wouldn't have a Rule 5 outfielder who hadn't played above Double-A on the roster.
Roster restrictions: Tigers’ Gardenhire must substitute with caution
Cleveland – The Detroit Tigers are carrying four bench players – two outfielders (JaCoby Jones and Victor Reyes), a super utility guy (Niko Goodrum) and a catcher-first baseman (John Hicks).
That configuration presents some inherent restrictions for a manager. For example, Ron Gardenhire is reluctant to use Hicks and catcher James McCann in the same game because there is no third catcher.
Ron Gardenire finds teaching moments amid Tigers’ 0-3 start
Detroit — Baseball 300 was in session Monday morning and professor Ron Gardenhire was presiding. The Tigers' 0-3 start has provided several salient teaching points.
The fifth inning of the nightcap Sunday.
The Pirates had runners on second and third with nobody out. Josh Harrison, one of the most notoriously aggressive runners in baseball, was on second base.

Victor Reyes ‘emotional’ over fresh start with Tigers
St. Petersburg, Fla. – For all of spring camp, he insisted on staying quiet, never for a moment wanting to imply that he was destined for Detroit and for a spot on the Tigers' regular-season roster.
But now he understands he can, and must, accept reality. Victor Reyes is going north with the Tigers and for a crash-course in big-league life.
Victor Reyes makes case to stick with Tigers
Lakeland, Fla. — Spring camp's surprises, to date, could be tucked neatly within the Tigers' vest pocket a week before they head north for their 2018 regular season.
But some of the gang that has shaken up an otherwise staid spring training at TigerTown continue to create a ruckus. Consider that Grapefruit League contest Tuesday on a windy, sometimes-wet afternoon, which saw the Tigers whip the Yankees, 8-3, at Joker Marchant Stadium's Publix Field.
Tigers face tough decision with Rule 5 pick Victor Reyes
Tampa, Fla. — Manager Ron Gardenhire understands how this works.
The Tigers took young outfielder Victor Reyes with the first pick of the Rule 5 draft at the Winter Meetings. That means Reyes has to remain on the active roster this season or else be exposed to waivers and offered back to the Diamondbacks, from whom they swiped him.
Hot bat keeps Jim Adduci in fight for spot with Tigers
Port St. Lucie, Fla. — You look at it one way and the odds again seemed stacked against Jim Adduci starting the season on the Tigers' 25-man roster.
He turns 33 in May, he plays outfield and first base and the Tigers are in a rebuilding phase. With first-year starters at third base (Jeimer Candelario) and second base (Dixon Machado), one of the utility spots likely will go to an infielder (Alexi Amarista, Niko Goodrum or Ronny Rodriguez).
