Nibali broke the 10th vertebrae in a crash on the famous climb up to Alpe d'Huez last week when a fan caught their camera strap on his handlebars.
Bahrain Merida doctor Emilio Magni said on Thursday: "The team and the rider agreed to the decision to have a percutaneous vertebroplasty surgery."

Froome was ahead with about half a kilometer to go but Nibali made a charge in the final sprint to clinch the 158-kilometer (98-mile) stage from Prades to Andorra La Vella. Froome ended third, behind David De La Cruz of Spain.

FILOTTRANO, Italy (AP) — The funeral of former Giro d'Italia winner Michele Scarponi will be on Tuesday in his hometown of Filottrano, near Ancona.
Scarponi, who won the Giro in 2011, died after a collision with a van while training near his home on Saturday. He was 37.
