Rams announce changes to coaching staff
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams have added three coaches to their staff, including the son of defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.
After another goodbye, Talib says Hello Again to Super Bowl
ATLANTA (AP) — It may seem as though Aqib Talib says "goodbye" as often as the flight attendant standing at the front of the plane. And yet, he keeps resurfacing on good teams — and at the Super Bowl.
The colorful cornerback brought his necklaces, his personality and, yes, even defensive coordinator Wade Phillips back to the big game — this time with the Rams.
Past and Future: Wade Phillips back at Super Bowl with Rams
ATLANTA (AP) — Wade Phillips doesn't understand why everybody is so impressed by his ability to bridge generations of people and football knowledge with equal aplomb.
Rams, Cowboys seek long-awaited postseason breakthroughs
LOS ANGELES (AP) — As if the pressure of playing for the Los Angeles Rams' first playoff victory in 14 years wasn't enough, Todd Gurley carries an extra imperative into the Coliseum on Saturday night.
"Basically, everybody I know hates the Cowboys," the Rams' All-Pro running back said. "They've been hitting me up all week, so I've got to try to take care of business for those guys."
With Talib set to return, Rams remain upbeat about defense
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — With an extra week to reflect on a Monday night shootout in which the Los Angeles Rams allowed 51 points and 546 yards to the Kansas City Chiefs, defensive coordinator Wade Phillips was focused on the positives.
The Rams had three interceptions, recovered two fumbles, scored two defensive touchdowns and were able to add one more win to their record.
Gurley runs for 208 yards in Rams’ 23-20 win over Broncos
DENVER (AP) — Not the wintry weather nor the Denver Broncos' spongy defense could slow down Todd Gurley .
The Rams running back rumbled for a career-high 208 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries and Los Angeles celebrated defensive coordinator Wade Phillips' homecoming Sunday with a 23-20 win over the reeling Denver Broncos.
Best drama: Rams defense keeps stepping up in fourth quarter
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams have seen cracks emerge in their star-studded defense the past two weeks.
The fourth quarter has not been one of those problems.
Despite allowing 31 points in wins over Minnesota and Seattle, just three of those 62 points were conceded in the fourth quarter, which gives defensive coordinator Wade Phillips confidence to address the Rams' issues in stopping the run and pass.
Broncos’ defenders eager for Phillips’ return with Rams
DENVER (AP) — Wade Phillips returns to Denver this weekend and several Broncos can't wait to hug it out with their former defensive coordinator.
Phillips was the Broncos' beloved bandmaster when they were riding firetrucks in a downtown parade and Von Miller was showing off the Super Bowl trophy 2½ years ago.
Phillips, Rams look to extend scoreless streak vs. Rivers
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips found a box of doughnuts at his desk on Monday morning as a reward for shutting out Arizona 34-0.
The treats have become a tradition for Phillips when his defense keeps the opposition scoreless, one that has even extended to West Sioux High School in Hawarden, Iowa, as the Falcons let Phillips know on Twitter this week after their varsity and junior varsity teams each recorded shutouts.
Rams’ Aaron Donald ready to make an impact against Cardinals
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — Aaron Donald is his own worst critic. Nothing is going to change that, not even a contract extension that briefly made the Los Angeles Rams' All-Pro lineman the highest-paid defender in NFL history.
Watt, Suh back on field in Rams’ 21-20 win over Texans
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Even after everything J.J. Watt has accomplished in football, he still relished the chance to walk on — and off — the field for his first game action since breaking his leg.
Todd Gurley, Jared Goff and the rest of the Los Angeles Rams' offense won't get any action at all in this preseason, but they insist they'll still be ready for the games that count.
Veteran LB Junior Galette to visit Rams, McVay confirms
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — Veteran linebacker Junior Galette will visit the Los Angeles Rams this week.
Galette will arrive Sunday night for a workout Monday with the Rams, coach Sean McVay confirmed.
McVay says "there's a good possibility" the Rams will sign Galette if the workout goes well.
Los Angeles could use another edge rusher and outside linebacker, with Samson Ebukam and Matt Longacre currently expected to start at the position in coordinator Wade Phillips' scheme.
IRVINE, Calif. (AP) — Although Wade Phillips is deep in the grind of his 41st NFL training camp, the defensive coordinator who has seen it all still doesn't know exactly what he has with the Los Angeles Rams.

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Rams safety Lamarcus Joyner will begin training camp on the non-football injury list.
The Rams made the decision Wednesday during annual preseason conditioning tests. The club didn't disclose any details of Joyner's injury.
Joyner can return from the list at any point, and the Rams need him healthy to be a key contributor to their defense.
Rams like how Talib, Peters and Suh are fitting in
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — When the Los Angeles Rams traded for cornerbacks Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters and signed defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, there were questions about how those three personalities might or might not coexist on the same defense.
Wrapping up their mandatory minicamp Wednesday, the Rams are optimistic those concerns have been put to rest.
The Philadelphia 76ers welcomed back rookie Markelle Fultz while rolling to their seventh consecutive win. Fultz had ten points, eight assists, and four rebounds in only 14 minutes as the Sixers whipped the Nuggets, 123-104. He was in action 5 ½ months after being sidelined by a shoulder injury. Fultz, who was the top pick in last year’s draft, checked in to a standing ovation with 2:54 left in the first quarter and drove down the baseline for a quick basket.
The Los Angeles Rams hope they have created a formidable defensive front to go with coordinator Wade Phillips' 3-4 scheme.
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters were laughing and joking like old friends shortly after the start of their first day together at the Los Angeles Rams' training complex.
The Rams' opponents might not have that much fun this fall when they face two of the NFL's best pass defenders in the same secondary.
Los Angeles Rams sign former Packers’ defensive back Sam Shields
The Los Angeles Rams continued to bolster their defense on Thursday, signing former Green Bay Packers cornerback Sam Shields and agreeing to trade for Denver Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib.
Shields made 23 interceptions, including the playoffs, from 2010-2015 and won a Super Bowl with the Packers. But his 2016 season was cut short after one game after he sustained a concussion and he didn’t play at all in 2017.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Aqib Talib is reuniting with Wade Phillips in Los Angeles after the Denver Broncos agreed to trade the star cornerback to the Rams, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press.
The Rams will send Denver a mid-round pick, believed to be a fifth-rounder, in next month's draft for the perennial Pro Bowl cornerback, said the person, who spoke off the record because the trade isn't official until the start of the new league year Wednesday.
When the Falcons have the ball: Matt Ryan has rarely played like the reigning MVP this season, and Steve Sarkisian’s group has barely resembled its record-breaking form of a year ago. But the parts — RBs Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman, WRs Julio Jones and Mohamed Sanu and an offensive line with the ability to maul susceptible defenses (see: Week 15 in Tampa Bay) — remain dangerous on the NFL’s eighth-ranked offense (15th in points).
At 70, Rams’ Wade Phillips leads another dynamite defense
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams haven't been to the playoffs in 13 years. Their roster has only six players with NFL postseason experience, and they're led by the youngest head coach ever to earn a playoff berth.
They've also got Wade Phillips, who has done, seen and counter-schemed just about everything that can be accomplished on a football field during 40 NFL seasons with 10 teams.
Rams lose pass rusher Matt Longacre for the season
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — Rams pass rusher Matt Longacre is done for the season because of a back injury.
Coach Sean McVay said Tuesday that Longacre will be placed on injured reserve after missing Los Angeles' 27-23 win at Tennessee on Sunday.
What’s wrong wtih SuperCam? Vikings test an uneven Cam Newton when they face the up-and-down Panthers
The Carolina Panthers just havent been the same since Wade Phillips blitzed the smirk right off Cam Newtons face in Denvers Super Bowl 50 upset 22 months ago.
Before that game, the Panthers of 2015 were a charmed 17-1 with a league-trouncing turnover ratio of plus-28. Since that game kicked off, however, Superman has gone 14-13 with 31 turnovers. His team is 14-15 with a turnover ratio of minus-10.
Familiar ring: Cowboys visit Giants as interim coach debuts
FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Jason Garrett dislikes comparisons, so the Dallas coach had no interest in recalling the motivation for his Cowboys when he debuted with a win at the New York Giants six days after the firing of Wade Phillips in 2010.
Why would Garrett get asked such a thing in the first place? Well, the Cowboys visit the Giants on Sunday. And New York will be led by interim coach Steve Spagnuolo after the firing of Ben McAdoo on Monday.
Barwin breaks forearm, will miss part of Rams’ playoff push
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams will have to persevere through their difficult late-season schedule without one of their defensive leaders.
Linebacker Connor Barwin had surgery Monday to repair a broken left forearm, Rams coach Sean McVay said.
Barwin had a plate inserted into his arm to aid healing. He will be out "the next couple weeks," according to McVay, likely sidelining him when the Philadelphia Eagles visit the Rams on Dec. 10.
Englewood, Colo. — Twenty-one months ago, John Elway was basking in a confetti shower as he put his fingerprints on the third Super Bowl trophy he's captured for the Denver Broncos and dedicated it to team owner Pat Bowlen, who's battling Alzheimer's.
Not much has gone right for Elway and the Broncos since that night in Northern California.

They haven’t lost since Oct. 1. I think I know how this movie ends.
2. Eagles, 8-1 (2)
Coming off a bye and heading for Big D to face a Cowboys team missing its engine.
3. Rams, 7-2 (3)
Lost in the shadows of Sean McVay’s offense is Wade Phillips’ defense.
LA Rams place safety Cody Davis on injured reserve
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams have placed safety Cody Davis on injured reserve.
The Rams made the move Friday with Davis. The fifth-year pro hasn't practiced since injuring his thigh nearly three weeks ago at Jacksonville.
Davis has one interception and 22 tackles this season for the Rams (5-2), who moved to a new defensive scheme this season under coordinator Wade Phillips. Davis played extensively on defense in the final four games before his injury.
Denver’s defense has added an air of mystery this season
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Denver's dominant defense had one fatal flaw last season. It was too predictable.
"I feel like last year you probably could've guessed what we were going to run our first five plays of the game," cornerback Aqib Talib said this week as the refreshed Broncos (3-1) prepared to face the depleted New York Giants (0-5) on Sunday night.
Rams put trust in depth, development by cutting Alexander
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams have plenty of options at safety, but enough for Maurice Alexander to go from starter to inactive to off the roster in eight days?
"Nobody could have seen that coming," Blake Countess said Thursday.
Rams LB Alec Ogletree agrees to 4-year contract extension
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Linebacker Alec Ogletree agreed to a four-year contract extension with the Los Angeles Rams through the 2021 season on Thursday night.
The Rams (3-2) reached the deal with Ogletree, their top tackler and a key leader on their defense, early in his fifth season with his only NFL club.
Way We Hear It: Rams might be poised to let 2018 free agent test market
The Los Angeles Rams are one of the great early stories of the 2017 NFL season as the league's highest-scoring team, a shocking but pleasant surprise.
Less talked about is their defense, which has had some dicey moments to this point and remains an area that needs improvement. The whole operation is still coming together under new coordinator Wade Phillips and there is a belief that things could tighten up based on the talent they have.
Five observations: Weren’t Cowboys offense, Patriots defense good once?
Here are five observations from Sunday's early Week 4 games:
1. Rams find answers defensively — When the Rams trailed 24-13 in the final minutes of the first half against the Dallas Cowboys, it would have been reasonable to assume how this game would be heading — and how Wade Phillips’ defense was not doing its job. The Cowboys were running the ball down the Rams’ throats and Dak Prescott was dazzling with his big-play ability.
Rams Preview Capsule
LOS ANGELES RAMS (4-12)
New faces: Coach Sean McVay, defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, WR Sammy Watkins, WR Robert Woods, LT Andrew Whitworth, LB Connor Barwin, C John Sullivan, CB Kayvon Webster.
Key losses: WR Kenny Britt, TE Lance Kendricks, OL Greg Robinson, WR Brian Quick, S T.J. McDonald, DL William Hayes, DL Dominique Easley (injury), QB Case Keenum.
Kayvon Webster filling many roles for Rams
IRVINE, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams needed a cornerback. In Kayvon Webster, they got a starter, a valuable special teams contributor, and a key conduit in helping explain what new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips wants to do.
"Unless something changes, he's starting and he's been very important to us," Rams head coach Sean McVay said. "I love the way that he works and he has been a joy to be around."
Rams DL Dominique Easley to miss season with knee injury
IRVINE, Calif. (AP) — A stalwart defensive line has been the Rams' biggest strength in recent years, and they returned to Los Angeles last season with a starting quartet reminiscent of their hallowed Fearsome Foursome of the 1960s.
The Rams' foundation is being severely tested after just a few workouts in their second season back home.
Los Angeles Rams must be prepared to make Aaron Donald NFL’s richest defender to end holdout
The Seahawks on Tuesday signed Pro Bowl S Kam Chancellor to a three-year extension containing $25 million guaranteed, as first reported by ESPN’s Josina Anderson. It served as a brief diversion from the NFC West’s — and NFL's — biggest contract spat, between the Rams and three-time Pro Bowler and camp holdout Aaron Donald.
The line to meet Wade Phillips at the Museum of the Gulf Coast stretched so long that it took almost two hours for the Southeast Texas native to meet everyone.
Phillips was in town Friday to promote his new book, "Son of Bum: Lessons My Dad Taught Me About Football and Life," and had book signings at Port Arthur's Museum of the Gulf Coast and Barnes & Noble in Beaumont.
