MILWAUKEE (AP) — Wisconsin's attorney general says a Milwaukee hospital will pay $360,000 to settle a lawsuit for improperly disposing of pharmaceutical hazardous waste from 2013 to 2016.
Attorney General Josh Kaul on Tuesday announced the settlement approved by a Milwaukee County judge.
Man accused of dumping poisonous liquid waste into creek
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A tanker truck driver for a waste disposal company is accused of dumping thousands of gallons of poisonous liquid waste into a South Carolina creek.
Citing a federal indictment issued this week, The State of Columbia reports Michael Greene was charged with "knowingly" and repeatedly dumping liquid waste into Leesburg Branch Creek near Eastover. The liquid waste contained toxic metals such as lead, mercury, selenium, cadmium and chromium.
Rome’s trash troubles turn into emergency after blaze
ROME (AP) — Rome's longstanding garbage problems turned into an emergency Tuesday after a huge fire at a waste disposal plant blanketed the Eternal City in smoke and forced authorities to scramble to find alternative facilities to treat the capital's trash.
The Salaria plant has been the subject of protests for years by residents complaining of putrid smells and demanding its closure. Arson was suspected, since the blaze put the plant out of operation indefinitely.
Court fines Texas-based oilfield waste disposal company
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico regulators announced a $2.2 million fine Wednesday against a Texas-based oilfield driller and waste disposal company, though it was unclear whether the company could be compelled to pay.
The New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department announced a state district court order that Midland, Texas-based Siana Operating cease disposal activities and clean up polluted well sites in the southeast of the state.
Large trash fire burns at Pueblo waste disposal facility
PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) — Firefighters on Saturday battled a large trash fire at a waste disposal facility at Pueblo in southeastern Colorado.
Pueblo County officials say no structures were threatened and there were no reported injuries from the fire at the C&C Disposal Transfer Station.
The fire was reported at about 4 a.m. Saturday by a passer-by who reported seeing large flames in the area. Flames were reported to be as high as 44 feet (13.4 meters).
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Texas Supreme Court has overturned Laredo's ban on disposable plastic bags in a ruling that likely dismantles similar bans in other cities across the state.
The court ruled Friday that Laredo's city ordinance violated state law that regulates solid waste disposal. The court said the Texas Constitution prevents local ordinances from conflicting with state law.

Farmers say state law should spell out that, if state regulators grant a waste permit, others should not be able to mount continuous challenges. The bill's supporters say the proposal would give banks a certain peace of mind if they know their clients aren't being sued often.
EPA to test possible contamination near Bettendorf site
BETTENDORF, Iowa (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency is investigating possible hazardous chemical contamination in the eastern Iowa city of Bettendorf.
The federal agency will test the air, soil and groundwater next week near a site that was used for waste disposal before disposal was subject to government regulation. Samples will be taken from about 40 properties within a two-mile radius of the Bettendorf site, which is 18 acres of undeveloped terrain.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Officials say Home Depot will pay $27 million to settle allegations in California that the retailer illegally disposed of hazardous waste and tossed customer records without first rendering personal information unreadable.

In this opinion piece I discuss the curious case of Powertech’s pending application for injection wells as a part of its proposed South Dakota uranium mining operation. Second US military chopper makes emergency landing in Japan
TOKYO (AP) — A U.S. military helicopter made an emergency landing Monday in Japan's Okinawa islands, the second such incident in three days.
A Marine Corps AH-1 attack helicopter with two people aboard landed in a field at a waste disposal site in the town of Yomitan on Okinawa's main island, according to Japanese media reports. No injuries were reported.
Photos showed an apparently intact helicopter parked in a grassy area.

The EPA last year inspected Stepping Stone Builders, Inc., and found three vehicle maintenance shops with floor drains illegally connected to a septic system.
The EPA says the company agreed to close the disposal well and pay a $36,500 penalty.
