R. KELLY - NEW TAPE?

NEW YORK (AP) — An attorney for R. Kelly says his client denies being on yet another video purportedly showing him sexually abusing young girls. Steve Greenberg tells The Associated Press he hasn’t seen the new tape. But he says word that there’s another one shows him it’s “now just open season” on the singer. Yesterday, Gary Dennis and attorney Gloria Allred said Dennis found the tape among old VHS cassettes — and when he saw what was on it, turned it in. Greenberg says instead of trying to figure out whether R. Kelly is on the tape, the bigger question in his mind — is why so many people seem to have child porn tapes — and why authorities aren’t investigating them.

R. KELLY - SECOND BENEFACTOR STEPS UP TO FREE HIM FROM JAIL

CHICAGO (AP) — Say what you want about R. Kelly, you have to admit he seems to have some generous friends. Many of us might hesitate to ask someone to spot us $20 until payday — but twice in the past few weeks, the R&B singer was freed from jail after someone paid his legal debt. The latest instance was Saturday, when someone paid the $161,633 Kelly owed in back child support. The benefactor asked not to be identified. Last month, when R. Kelly lacked bail money, someone paid $100,000 to get him sprung. That person is identified only as a Chicago-area businesswoman who says she’s a “friend” of the singer. It’s unclear whether the people who wrote the checks are the same person.

R. KELLY’S ATTORNEY SEEKS EVIDENCE

CHICAGO (AP) — R. Kelly’s lawyer says he’s being kept in the dark about his client’s case. Steve Greenberg says no one has shared “one piece of evidence” in the case against the R&B singer, charged with 10 counts of sexual abuse of underage girls and young women. Greenberg says once he does gets hold of the evidence, he’ll mount a defense for the singer.

BEYONCE, JAY-Z TO BE HONORED AT GLAAD MEDIA AWARDS

NEW YORK (AP) — Beyonce and Jay-Z are getting recognized for achievements outside of music: The power couple will be honored at the GLAAD Media Awards for accelerating LGBTQ acceptance. GLAAD announced Monday that the Carters will receive its Vanguard Award at its 30th annual awards on March 28 in California. The award, previously given to Cher, Janet Jackson, Elizabeth Taylor and Antonio Banderas, honors “allies who have made a significant difference in promoting acceptance of LGBTQ people,” GLAAD said. GLAAD says Jay-Z and Beyonce, who has a large gay fanbase, are being recognized for speaking out about marriage equality nationwide and for including members of the LBGTQ community in their artwork.

BOX OFFICE

NEW YORK (AP) — Before the movie came out, few knew who “Captain Marvel” was. But now the Marvel character and the movie based on her — are the talk of Hollywood. The first female-fronted superhero movie from Marvel dominated the box office race, taking in $153 million in the U.S. and Canada in its first weekend and $455 million globally. That makes it one of the biggest blockbusters ever led by a woman. Brie Larson plays Carol Danvers, first mentioned in Marvel in 1968. Only “The Avengers” movies, “Black Panther,” ″Captain America: Civil War” and “Iron Man 3” have done better. Those aren’t the only marks “Captain Marvel” reached. It set a worldwide mark for a film directed or co-directed by a woman. It’s also the sixth largest worldwide debut ever, despite online reviews on Rotten Tomatoes that were, let’s say, less than appetizing.

AMERICA FERRERA - PROTESTS

MEXICO CITY (AP) — It wasn’t your typical appearance by a group of celebrities. Over the weekend, actress America Ferrera led a small group of artists on a tour of a migrant shelter in the Mexican border city of Tijuana. Dressed casually and wearing little or no makeup, they spoke with immigration lawyers and managers of government shelters. They also colored pictures with kids. Ferrera notes in a phone interview with The Associated Press that many of the migrants were from Honduras, like her parents. She says being caught up in a border battle “could very easily” been her reality. Ferrera says the delegation was inspired by images of migrant children separated from their parents by U.S. officials.

“SMILF” CANCELED AMID CLAIMS AGAINST STAR-PRODUCER

LOS ANGELES (AP) — During its two years on the air, “SMILF” picked up two Golden Globes nods and won critical acclaim. But it has now lost the support of its network and the company bankrolling the show. Both Showtime and ABC studios have cut ties with “SMILF” and Frankie Shaw, the woman who was its star and executive producer. Neither firm is saying why. But the move comes months after The Hollywood Reporter ran an article detailing allegations of abusive on-set behavior by Shaw. Among the claims: that she breached actors’ contracts in sex scenes and separated writers based on race. Shaw denies the allegations.

JENNIFER LOPEZ AND ALEX RODRIGUEZ ARE ENGAGED

LOS ANGELES (AP) — He liked it — and put a ring on it. And she said “yes.” Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez are engaged — with the baseball star giving the actress a diamond that seems almost as large as the one he performed on during his playing days. The couple posted a photo of their hands — with a huge rock on Lopez’s ring finger. The two have been dating since early 2017. No word on a date for the nuptials, which would be the fourth for Lopez and the second for Rodriguez. Each has two children from previous marriages.

ESPORTS TEAMING WITH NASCAR

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — It had all the trappings of a big-time sports draft event, with commissioners, teams and anxious draftees converging in one spot. But in this case, the draft was for the first-ever eNASCAR Heat Pro League. There are 14 teams and 28 drivers, each owned and run by a top NASCAR team. The season begins in the spring on Xbox and PlayStation — and stretches into the fall. NASCAR president Steve Phelps says swerving into e-sports represents another way to connect with its fans.

CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ON STRIKE

CHICAGO (AP) — There’s no harmony on contract talks. So musicians with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra are on strike. The musicians say they’re on the picket lines to fight efforts by orchestra management to cut their pensions. The old contract expired last September — and had been extended until yesterday.
