Jewelry Heist in Paris Daylight

January 17, 2002

PARIS (AP) _ Three hooded men crashed a car into a jewelry store in a posh Paris neighborhood on Thursday, then robbed the store of more than $500,000 worth of jewelry, police said.

The robbery took place at 10 a.m. at a store on Franklin Roosevelt Avenue, a tony street off the Champs-Elysees. The men backed their car into the store’s front window, partially shattering it, then hacked away at the window with axes and entered the store.

A jeweler in the store at the time fled to a back room. He later called police.

A special police crime unit is investigating. Authorities said such robberies rarely occur in broad daylight in Paris.
