May 9, 2014

MADRID (AP) — Five members of a youth football team aged between 12 and 15 were killed when their bus collided with another vehicle in southwestern Spain, the Interior Ministry said Friday.

A spokesman said police arrested the driver of the second vehicle, a farm digger, after he tested positive for drugs after the accident late Thursday.

The bus carrying 15 youngsters and three adults collided with the farm vehicle and overturned close to the town of Castuera, some 350 kilometers (220 miles) southwest of Madrid, the ministry said. The accident occurred as the bus tried to overtake the digger.

The bus was taking the team back to the town of Monterrubio de la Serena following a match.

Twelve people were injured but on Friday just three youngsters and one adult remained in the hospital and none was in serious condition.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with ministry regulations.

The regional government of Extremadura declared three days of mourning in the region.
