MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Simona Halep (HAL’-ehp) has beaten one Williams sister at the Australian Open and now will face the other. The top-seeded Halep reeled off six consecutive games in one stretch and ended up beating Venus Williams 6-2, 6-3 in the third round. It’s the fifth consecutive Grand Slam tournament Williams has exited before the fourth round. Next for Halep is a showdown Monday against 23-time major champion Serena Williams, who beat an 18-year-old from Ukraine, Dayana Yastremska, 6-2, 6-1.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — No. 17 seed Madison Keys has reached the second week of the Australian Open for the fourth time with a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 12-seeded Elise Mertens. The American has reached the semifinals at three of the last five Grand Slam events. Her opponent in the fourth round will be sixth-seeded Elina Svitolina.

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) — Lindsey Vonn has finished tied for ninth in the second race of her return from injury. The American made several errors and was 1.36 behind but still moved up six spots from her 15th-place finish yesterday. Vonn needs five more wins to break the all-time World Cup record of 86 held by Swedish standout Ingemar Stenmark before she retires at the end of the year.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — DeMarcus Cousins scored 14 points on 5 of 11 shooting in his debut with Golden State, helping the Warriors to their seventh consecutive win. Cousins also had six rebounds and three assists in the 112-94 win over the Clippers in Los Angeles. It was Cousins’ first game since last January, when he ruptured his left Achilles tendon playing for New Orleans.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Nate Kaczor (KAT’-sur) has been hired by the Washington Redskins as their special teams coordinator. He replaces Ben Kotwica, who joined the Atlanta Falcons this month after five years with the Redskins. Kaczor spent the past three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as special teams coordinator. He also has worked for the Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL.
