Billy Knight May Be Grizzlies’ GM
VANCOUVER (AP) _ Billy Knight, a former NBA all star and current senior vice-president of basketball operations for the Indiana Pacers, has been offered the job as Vancouver Grizzlies GM and may already have accepted the post, the Vancouver Sun reported today.
Quoting unidentified sources, the Sun said Knight would replace Stu Jackson, the Grizzlies’ original general manager who is almost certain to be fired by new owner Michael Heisley when the Chicago billionaire takes control of the team at the end of the season.
Knight, who is attending the Nike Desert Classic, an annual gathering of some of the top college draft prospects, in Phoenix refused to comment.
Told that sources have suggested he has been offered a management job in Vancouver, Knight said: ``Well, if that’s what your sources are telling you. . .″
Like all the names that have surfaced since Heisley’s $160-million bid to buy the Grizzlies was accepted back in late January, Knight has a link to Dick Versace.
Versace, who has been providing basketball advice to Heisley, is a former head coach of the Pacers. When his name became linked to Heisley a couple of months ago, it was felt that he would likely become general manager. But it’s now looking like he will instead replace Lionel Hollins as head coach.
Since retiring as a player following the 1984-85 season, Knight has worked in several different jobs in the Pacers’ organization, including community relations, scout, assistant coach and director of player personnel.
Heisley, who had his ownership bid approved by the NBA board of governors on Tuesday, is refusing all comment until he closes his deal with Orca Bay. That won’t happen until the end of the regular season.
