Oldest person in U.S. celebrates 114th birthday: Cleveland Heights’ Lessie Brown

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio - America’s oldest living person, Lessie Brown, of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, celebrated yet another birthday on Saturday afternoon at her home.

Brown turned 114 years old on the occasion, surrounded by family and friends who couldn’t say enough nice things about the woman who they described as strong and determined, yet gentle and loving.

Born in Atlanta in 1904, Brown became the oldest living person in the United States in May of 2018, and is number nine on the list of oldest living people in the world according to Wikipedia.

Two of three of Brown’s living children, Vivian Hatcher, 90, and Verline Wilson, 89, as well as grandchildren, and a great grandchild attended the small gather at the home she shares with her daughter Verline.  Family had a hard time coming up with the exact number of descendants that Brown has, estimating more than 50, but they do know that she has two great-great-great grandchildren, Aleigha, 1, and Jacob McVety, 2 months, of Celina, Ohio.

According the family members, Brown attributes her longevity to eating a sweet potato everyday until she was 110.  The also say that working on the farm in Bedford, built by her husband, helped keep her in great shape.
