SYDNEY, Australia (AP) _ Frenchman Henri Leconte was placed above two of tennis’ superstars after storming to his first Australian title Sunday in the $145,000 Alberto NSW Men’s Open at White City.

An awed Kelly Evernden claimed the brilliant lefthander was ″unbeatable″ when in form after being on the receiving end of a 6-7 6-2 6-3 center court whipping in a two-hour final.

″I’ve played Jimmy Connors and Boris Becker but I never felt so helpless as I did out there today,″ Evernden said. ″I felt I was in the match the whole time against those guys, but against Henri I felt I had no prayer.

″When he decided he wanted to hit a winner, I just had to sit there and watch.″

The fifth-seeded Leconte became the first Frenchman to win the NSW title.
